Level 5-5 rankings?
I
sent this before, but never got a response.
Are
level 5-6's ranked in anyway? My granddaughter
is an 8yr old level 5. One of her coaches told
my daughter that Jessica is ranked number one
in the state for 8yr old level 5's. Can you
verify this for
me? The state is Illinois btw.
Thank you.

Who
has QuickTime gymn MOVs out there? Perhaps they can be put on the GYMN
ftp site?
I can do QuickTime video captures on my
Mac and flatten them for Windows,
so they can be
viewed with both the Mac and Windows QuickTime MoviePlayer
(version 2.0) from Apple. I've successfully done this with a
video clip of
the capsizing of our whitewater raft
last summer. I'm planning to put
up
Canadian FIG-Coded moves (Strong, Rankin, Cappuccitti,
Homma, Oka,
Poulin,...(any
guy's moves, Hardy?)) as very brief QT MOVs under
my
Gymnastics Canada home page some time this year. But first, I need
more
disk space.

What would this be comparable to in the US? What skills are on this level?
Don't
know where to find a Level 9 around here but...
In artistic women's gymn in Canada, the National Stream categories are
Novice, Open, Junior High Performance, and Senior High Performance.
Each
province has their own Provincial Stream. I don't know how all the
provinces handle their provincial stream, but here are my
impressions on
Ontario vs. Massachusetts (basically the only 2 places where
I've lived) in
skill level & performance:
Optionals but not compulsories are competed in Ontario.
Hopefully, this may
help U.S. clubs who may be
interested in hosting Ontario clubs for
invitationals and vice versa.
Level 1
(Pre-Novice 9 & 10 yrs old 1st year, Novice 10
& 11 yrs old, Junior
12 & 13, Senior 14
& up):
- may
only perform FIG A & B skills, C, D, & E skills are restricted, no
bonus
- only
1A & 1B (other than Pre-Novice) vaults may be performed
- don't need
more than 8 elements, 1 bar change, A dismount on bars
- acro
series doesn't need flight, A dismount on beam
- 2 salto line
allowed but not required, gym series of min 3 A's on floor
- generally
well-executed and well-composed routines
- equivalent to
Level 5-7 in performance in Mass.
Level 2 (Pre-Novice, Novice, Junior,
Senior, Open):
- no round-off entry to vault, beam, bars, no bonus
- D & E skills are restricted, C
skills restricted for Pre-Novices
- only Senior
& Open have FIG special requirements
- vaults are
typically handspring-full, half-full, sometimes half-1.5
- bars usually
include usual B flights, giants (Junior & up)
- typically
don't see flight acro series on beam, usually front salto dismounts
- about 50% of
the competitors perform layout full, front to back salto
tumbling on floor, double saltos
are restricted
- generally very well-executed and well-composed routines
- equivalent to
Level 7-9 in performance in Mass.
Level 3 (Pre-Novice, Novice, Junior,
Senior):
- only
Senior 3 competes full FIG no restrictions
- Yurchenko
vaults, D & E skills are restricted (except Sr
3)
- C's not required until
Junior, double saltos restricted until Junior
- handspring-1.5,
half-1.5 vaults, some Tsuk tuck & pike,
occasional front tuck
- giants with pirouette, occasional front giant, nobody D
releases
- double
turns on beam, some ff-ff connections, simple mixed
series, saltos
- a few double saltos on floor from Juniors & Seniors, double fulls
- medium-valued skills, well-executed and well-composed
routines
- athletes
who try out for National Stream in November and don't make 66.0
for 2 days of FIG Ib, end up in
Level 3
- equivalent
to Level 9-10 in skill level and performance in Mass.
There is also
Ontario Pre-Novice 4 level which is like the US
Elite
Childrens' level (if that's still around). They compete 4A & 4B, no bonus,
FIG
special requirements, and only Yurchenko vaults and E's
are restricted.
In many regions in Ontario, there are recreational
competitive levels as well.
I have noticed that many of the routines in
rec-comp have similar content.
So compared to US compulsories in skill
level & performance, this is where
you would
see equivalence to US Levels 4-5. Girls that do US Level 1-3
skills don't normally compete around here.
Hope
this helps. And I hope you weren't
referring to RSG ;^)...

Grace

Re: Question re: eligibility for Atlanta team
A gymnast who hopes to
make the team to Atlanta must first qualify to
the
U.S. Championships. There is one
more meet in which a gymnast can
qualify to
nationals, the U.S. Classic in May.
Kim Zmeskal must compete
in that meet if she hopes to compete in Atlanta. I am wondering,
though,
if Senior National Team Members from the previous year are
automatically qualified to this years nationals,
though. Since Amanda
Borden was
petitioned onto the Senior National Team last year, if it is
true that Senior National Team members are prequalified, she
would not
have to compete in the U.S.
Classic. If national team members
are not
already qualified, though, Amanda, like
Kim, would have to compete at
the U. S.
Classic

The thing I'm thinking about is
that if Kim Kelly got "kicked" off
the
team, how can Kim Zmeskal make it? I mean, she hasn't
competed
in a while, I don't think she'll
be at the American Cup, she missed
the American
Classic last summer and Nationals, so, if she makes
Olympic Trials or
whatever, I wonder if they'll take into
consideration
that she hasn 't competed in a while. But then again, I
know
she is a big time veteran. Maybe it
will be the opposite, maybe
an unexperienced
girl who makes it will be replaced by Kim!?!?!; or
something
to that effect.

There are several QT movies
at the Penn State sites, which are at:
http://www.cde.psu.edu/users/pzb4/PSU_Gymnastics.html
and
http://www.cde.psu.edu/users/pzb4/WGymn/WGymn.html
I'm
not sure if they are FTP'able. You might ask Pat Besong
(pzb4@cde.psu.edu), the maintainer of that page.
BTW,
is anyone else having trouble with long response times from my
(Stanford's) web server? Just wondering if it's an internal
problem or
if the server is taking its time with
everyone.

I severly
doubt that Kim will be at the US Classic, Nationals, or *THE* Trials.
I
think she's just doing exhibitions. I doubt that ANYONE who was serious
about the Olympic would only attend two to three meets prior
to the games.
Think about it people? I thought she'ld make it, but now I realize it's
a pipedream.

Hey everyone, check out the USA
Gymnastics site:
http://www.usa-gymnastics.org/usag/
The web
site includes pages for the American Cup, which
I will be updating DURING
the meet right from the

enter a contest for one of ten free American Cup

Re: Atlantic Gymn Club's New Web Address
Howdy.
There
is a small typo in the Web address Tony sent out for the Booster
Club of his gym.
A slash is replaced by a questionmark. So, after successfully
trying out the site, permit me to offer this correct address
for this site:
http://www.fosters.com/FOSTERS/staging/atlantic.htm
This site
seems like a great idea for gyms around the world. There are sections
of the web page like 'Meet the Coaches,' 'Meet the
Gymnasts,' 'Results,'
'Sponsors,' and and
Upcoming Meets section as well. I
hope this innovative
trend will continue, as it
can do nothing if not increase public interest in the
sport
of gymnastics!!

Subject: Fantasy Gymnastics, anyone?
A few months
back, someone posted on the plausibility and possibility of a
Fantasy
Gymnastics 'game.'
I am interested in this, especially with the
Olympics coming up. If
anyone
would be willing to give a little expertise
and/or experience, I would also be
interested in
attempting to set this up. My
husband has participated in Fantasy
Football (American Football...) at his
work, and their setup required an initial
pay-in
of (if I recall correctly) about US$5--I do not know how or if a $$
requirement would work via the Internet...They also had a
much smaller number of
'players'--about 10. It would probably be best to run it a
few times (maybe
without the cash...) before the
Olympics to iron out any kinks. Or,
like in the
Fantasy Football contests, to run it for a series of
competitions--like a
'gymnastics season' since
Fantasy Football doesn't run for only one game, but a
series
of games.
If it's possible, and if someone would be willing to help
hammer out a plan, so
would I. Football fans shouldn't have all the
fun!
Thanks,
Michele

Olympic TV Viewing
Howdy again,
Has anyone heard about TV
coverage in the US for the Olympics?
I remember during the '92
Barcelona Games there was a huge pay-per-view
'special'
where you could order the 'Red Channel' the 'Blue Channel,' or the
'Yellow Channel,' or all three. Each channel broadcast different events,
which
I were published in advance, so you could choose what events you want
to watch.
I heard financially this pay-per-view event was a financial flop,
but I am
curious to know if any of you partook,
and if so, how did you like it?
Has
anyone heard of such a program for the
Atlanta Games? Thanks in
advance.
