Perfection
We all seem to get the fact that Nadia recieved
the first perfect 10 in the
Olympic in 1976. My
question is: Does anyone know of a gymnast who recieved
perfect marks prior to 1975? I thought that Nadia recieved a 10 in Skien
Norway
at Europeans and I know that she got on at the America's Cup in 1976.
So,
who was the first Male and Female to get a '10' in an international
competition?

Moves on Beam
Dear Gymners,
Yesterday at my gym(Brown's Metro), the girls levels 8-10 had a
mock-meet against LaFleurs. A girl from LaFleurs,
Lisa Panioni(sp?) threw
some
cool moves on beam that I had never seen before. First, she did a 3/4
twisting Shushunova to a support
position on the side of the beam.
What is
this worth and who was the first to
do it? Then, she did a front tuck
with
a half twist swing down. What it this worth and who was the first
to do
this?
Any info. on these moves would be greatly
appreciated. THANKS!
Gymnastically
yours,
David

Kentucky State gymnast Jenny Hansen, the regining
NCAA all-around champion,
was one of the 11
nominees announced Monday (19 December 1995) for the
Honda-Broderick Cup,
which is awarded annually to the year's "outstanding
collegiate woman athlete." The winner will be announced
at a January 8th
banquet to be held in Dallas,
Texas (gleaned via UPI).

Nadia didn't score any
10's at the '75 Europeans (9.65, 9.70, 9.75, 9.75
for 38.85), but she received the highest score of the meet
(9.9 for UB in
EF). According
to the ROM book "Nadia Comaneci si echipa de aur", she
scored her first 10 at the '75 ROM Nationals, on FX. From what I've
read,
her first "international" 10 came at the '76 CAN-ROM dual meet
(held before the American Cup), where she received 6 perfect
marks.
I vaguely remember reading somewhere that Latynina
or Caslavska had
received
a 10 sometime in her career...
For the men, there were several 10's
given out at the '80 Olympics
(Ditiatin for V; Deltchev for R; Tkachev for HB; Nikolay for PH; and
Magyar for PH) in
the AA. Magyar was the only
man to get a 10 in EF, for
his PH routine. There have surely been 10's awarded
before this,
probably at national champs, dual
meets, etc.?

THANKS!
-I saw Kristy Wanner of the Bluewater Gym Club in Sarnia, Ontario (CAN)
train this move about a year ago. She punched from two feet doing
(what
I called) a Barani straddle-down. I don't know how long she had
been
doing it, so whether Kristy is the first to
do it I don't know. I don't
recall seeing it anywhere else but unfortunately whoever
performs it
first at a Worlds or Olympics gets the
credit. Not a fair rule IMHO,
but can you imagine how many letters & videos the FIG
Tech. committees
would have on their desk if
everyone had a move they wanted named after
them? Though, apprently
originality doesn't matter to the FIG anymore
anyway........
(no flames, please!)
This Worlds/Olympics
rules, though, brings to mind a few gymnasts who
could've
& should've had moves named after them. First to my mind is
the Chen (tuck-open Korbut) which
should be called an Anderson IMHO
(and *is* called
an Anderson in an older USGF supplement to the FIG Code.)
Or Jackie Bender
(CAN) who wouldn't even have been able to fit all of her
original
skills into a 90 second beam routine!!
Just rambling...

Caslavska got a 10 for her floor routine at the nationals
but I can't
remember the year. 68?

Re: GYMN-L Collegiate Update Vol. 1, no. 4
Jenny attends and competes
for The University Of Kentucky, NOT Kentucky
State University, which is a
different University in a different city.
UK
(not to be confused with the United
Kingdom) is in Lexington, Kentucky, and
is my alma
mater. Jenny, after having won the
NCAA AA for three years in a
row, has to be one of
the greatest collegiate gymnasts ever.
We're very
fortunate that her great love of
horses and equestrian sports brought her
here to
the Bluegrass. I know her coach,
Leah Little, is very pleased to
have her
here. She certainly deserves the
Sullivan. I know the men have
the Nissan (Sp.?) award presented annually for the
outstanding male
collegiate gymnast; do the women
have a comparable award?

Gymnastics Triva
I was looking at my old Trival Pursuit and the sports and leisure
question ask Who was the first women to qualify for all four
finals at
the Olympics? The answer is Mary Lou Retton and I was wondering if
this
is true. Is it also true that after
the 1976 Olympics that the age
was raised to
fifteen? I know it is now 16 after
96, but I was
wondering if the answers are
true.

Aloha Gymfest
There was a recent inquiry on
GYMN on whether the Aloha Gymfest would
be held this year.
Well, when I read today's newspaper on current
events,
there was a notice in the sports section that as of 6:30 pm
today ( 12/28/95)Hawaii time the meet prelims
commenced. It is being
held in Kalaheo High School's gymnasium with tickets going
for $5.
Artistic gymnasts from England, Japan, Australia, and US are
competing.
Will try to post results as soon as I am
able to obtain them. Aloha!

pits
Pits are easy to build.
Basically
you decide if you want to dig it in the ground of build overhead.
CSC
is renting space in a mothballed high school gym wing.
This means the floor
cant be dug up.
No prob !
Overhead platworm ends, large box full of foam at the end to fall
into.
Storage under the platform.
So
figure out your sizes. How long you
want the ramp?
How much floorspace should it
include (wide/long).
Have you the ceiling space to
put it 8 ft in the air ?
8ft
deep is plenty deep if you got the room.
As you can see its pretty easy to
plan.
Throw some numbers at me and Ill help
you with the details.
If you are going to dig up the floor thats a cinch.
There arent many plans because its just SO easy to do off the
cuff.
Like I said, throw some numbers at me, Ill design it for
you
(and maybe put some blueprints up for Rachele to put on the web ?)

Mary Lou's thingy
OK
Heres the scoop.
As most of you know, PC's mostly have a
compatible system of adding
new circuitboards.
Its called a "buss" and i wont bore
you with
all the gory details on what it really
is.
Most MACs have a common buss.
The laptops are in the
process of standardizing on a new buss called PCMCIA.
Mary Lou was
showing off IBM's new PCMCIA modem card.
Tennsy
thing you add to a laptop to give it an internal modem/fax.
Mary-Lou
was doing some stuff as a sports reporter for awhile.
A
laptop is great for that, as she can edit her copy, then at the next
stop, jump in a phonebooth and
either fax it in or upload it to the master
typesetter
system at whatever rag shes writing for at the
time.
She can even run a spreadsheet to make sure shes
not getting stiffed by
the companies shes endorsing.
Really for her, its a great
gadget, for IBM, they chose an atriculate model.
Some
guys might even say "Shes cute and smart !"
Well anyways, thats what shes doing for
IBM.
(Now if shed only do a spot for a REAL computer company... like
SGI)

I get unlimited time for $17.50 US.
My first 5 megs online storage are free.
I get news, irc, i can use the shell for
writing software, i get

I went with shell because I dont have
to use a PC to login.
You can get a slip account if you demand a point
& click interface.
With the slip account, you get something like
AOL,
course with slip you MUST have your own
computer and you cant login with
say a Teletype
ASR35 !
Oh yes, they are almost nationwide now and will soon go
international.
Tell them that texx sent
