Subject: Women's AA final (SPOILERS)

I had been hoping for something like the men's AA final, with almost all the
top competitors hitting all their routines, but I guess it was just not to be,
except for the medallists.  Let's hope we see something more like
Tuesday night for event finals.

Congratulations to Podkopayeva and the trio of Romanians for their
well-deserved success.  I just wish that Khorkina, Dawes, and Miller
hadn't had such problems.

The secret of how to win Olympic woman's AA while the reigning AA world champion
is revealed--you must be Ukrainian :-)!

No one who medalled got less than a 9.7 on any routine.
Miller's FX was the only sub-9.5 score among the top 14 finishers.
An example of how tight the competition was: Not only would Mo have
won silver if she hadn't stepped out of bounds on her FX; if Miller had
not given up (my guess) .1 each on her 3 shaky FX landings, _she_ would
have won the silver.  I'm sure a lot of the competitors were thinking
"if only" thoughts about small mistakes last night, let alone big ones.

The coverage on NBC was much better last night, although I could have done
with a little more of Gogean, and a little footage of the awards
ceremony, and a little less of the literally in-your-face
camera shots.  Was Mo closing her eyes in concentration, or was she
thinking, "Maybe if I keep my eyes shut, this guy will go away and
leave me alone."?  And I absolutely loathe the ghoulish practice of
training the camera on a dejected athlete and leaving it there.
If you must show "the agony of defeat," please keep it to a quick shot,
no longer than the one of Khorkina sitting on the floor after her
fall from bars.  I wonder what the non-American competitors make
of all these guys crouching around with cameras.  Some seem amused
(like Milo), but a lot look bemused and/or a bit annoyed.

Still don't understand why Mo's bars were scored so high, or
Dawes' floor so low, but it didn't make any difference in the
medal standings.

Just wanted to let everyone know about a very funny article on Tesh at
ESPNET.sportszone.com--follow features from there or look for Tesh.  For
all of you Tesh bashers, this is a must see, very funny and very mean to
him.

or I'll be mad!!!!!

Wasn't she great.  I don't think I saw her on every event though.  I too
watched NBC, I wanted to get the Medal Ceremony.  Oh well, I guess that's
what happens.  I was really surprised to see Gogean get the silver.

But I was so happy that both Amanar and Milo got medal too.  I think they
both deserved them a lot.  So is Milo going to Retire?

I want to know why you are excited? from your name, I dont think that you
are a chinese. it is rare for a non-chinese to feel excited about this.

So they are coming to Las Vegas? How did you get the info?

As for the <<American Anthem>>, I saw it in China. I think that this
movie didn't make big money in the usa, but it did make money in China.

And I don't understand why hollywood is so ignorant to dub any foreign
films into English? Countries around the world have the capacities to dub
and actually understand films from other countries.

I think this SUCKED.  All they showed was SAD SAD moments.  Mo's problem on
floor, Khro's bars, and other people's problems.  I mean, Gymnastics should
be shown as a happy moment.  Like MEDAL ceremoney perhaps.  I really didn't
mind watching NBC, but the constant repeating and this showing sad moments.
We want everyone to remember how HAPPY the olympics are for gymnasts not sad.

I am so happy for Lavinia Milosovici.  All along I was hoping that her
or Shannon would win a medal.  She really proved that at 20 she is
just as good as she was four years ago at 16.  This is really fabulous
for the sport.  I hope this will encourage gymnasts to keep competing
after their "prime."

Jordynn and I found a way to avoid getting angry with the lack of applause
that some gymnasts recieved at the GeorgiaDome.  We just cheered
very loudly from our living room - for everyone.  That way we couldn't
here the crowd whether they were cheering or not! Try it, it works.

Per a number of judges - it turns out that Pae Gil Su did not do the correct
pommel horse compulsory routine.  There are to be a certain number of
circles at each end of the horse and he did not perform the circles at the
proper point in the routine - therefore scoring the 9.462.  He did do the
routine with excellent execution and it is a great disappointment that you
will not see him in Event finals.

Subject: Dawes' FX score

This is actually Christopher Scott replying, direct from Atlanta via
Mayland's computer.  I think I need to explain why Dawes scored what she
got. Yes, a fall is 0.5, but she also went out of bounds, which is another
0.1.  Also, she the pass she fell on was 0.3 in special connections bonus,
which she will probably not get since she fell.  I am guessing (since I'm
not a judge) that her start value was only 9.7 (maybe 9.8), so with 0.6 for
that error, her score is right on IMO.

Subject: Lilya's coaches?

I'm a little confused here.  The "fluff piece" on Pods on NBC mentioned
Ludmila Touresheva as her coach.  Then, during her next routine, they
mentioned another woman's name.  When she completed her
routine, she was greeted by two men.  What's the deal?

Subject: My web site update

Hi, everyone.

I just added a few links to my Olympic page.

http://www.angelfire.com/free/China.html

Together with quite a few Chinese Olympic links, I also added Australia,
Canada, German, South Africa and Netherland Olympic links.

You will be surprised to see how other countries cover this game as a
WORLD game instead of game of their own country.

i can't understand why nbc is so ignorant. everything they broadcast is
about usa, usa.

Subject: European Wide Screen Broadcasts

Has anybody in Europe watched the wide screen transmission of the womens
optional team and individual gymnastics?

I have only one VCR and have recorded the BBC transmissions. While switching
between the BRT wide screen and the BBC I have noticed considerable
difference in the coverage of the events.

In my opinion gymnastics is not ideally suited for wide screen transmission
in the way I saw yesterday. The camera's were in second rate positions
(farther away and higher) resulting in distracting backgrounds. It was also
strange to see the same excercise simultaneously from totally different
viewpoints.

However, I have been able to watch some of the 'lesser' gymnasts perform
their FX, like Nikolett Krausz (pretty redhead...) or Ruth Moniz or Yvonne
Tousek.

Has somebody in Europe recorded these complete, live and silent (without
commentary) transmissions? I would like to buy a copy or swap it with a copy
of my BBC recordings. Please email me privately.

Here follows a short translation in Dutch, since I watched the Belgian BRT.

Edwin
