DTB Gala
On Christmas Day DSF showed a boradcast
of the DTB Gala 1995. It was
an exhibition gala
with some of the top gymnasts taking part. not
sure when it actually took place, probably right after the
DTB Cup
last month.
anyway
amongst those taking part include Vitaly Scherbo, Grigori
Misutin, Valeri Belenki, Andreas Wecker, Lavinia Milosovici, Gina
gogean, Liliya
Podkopayeva, etc. Not just artistic gymnasts
participated either, Kristin Sroka
performed rhythmic gymnastics,
and other forms of
gymnastics were also on display: sports
acrobatics,
wheel gymnastics, general gymnastics, team aerobics,
and
even BMX trick biking.

Rock n' roll challenge
What did you all think about ESPN's broadcast
of the Rock and Roll Challenge?
I think that the format of the competition
was interesting and fun to watch.
However, I thought that ESPN had too many
commercials spliced into the little
bit of film
they had. I don't know about many
of you, but I was thrilled to
see Kim back
performing. She always was and will be one of my favorites. Her
double layouts looked wonderful.
I actually had one
question about the coverage. Why was Dominique Dawes
seated
with what appeared to be Mary Lee Tracy after both of her routines,
and not Kelly Hill, the woman whom I thought was Dominique's
coach?
Does anyone know of any televised gymnastics events that are
coming up in the
near future, in the next month or
so. Any responses would be appreciated.
Yours in gymnastics,
Shari
;^)

Re: Rock n' roll challenge
I
don't get ESPN up here in Canada, but I am just dying to know
how Kim Zmeskal looked. Could someone please post as many
details as
they can about how she did, and what
her routines were like! Shari
said
that her double layouts - plural - looked
great. Did she do one on floor
and off bars?
What else did she do on bars?
What other tumbling did she
do? Did they show beam? Please, could someone post as many
specific
details as possible. I'm sure that there are others who do
not get ESPN
who would love to know how Kim looked
as well. Please hurry! I'm going
out
of town tomorrow, and won't be able to check my mail again for a week!
Chris.

Chris,
This was the best I've
seen Kim since '92. She looked great. The format of
the
competition was a bit of a surprise. Each athlete performed two floor
routines focused on
artistic impression, and that's all. Five non-gymnastics
judges scored them out of ten points each, for a total of 50
points per
routine. That's why Kim did two double
layouts. Both of them were about as
good as it
gets. She also did her famous three whip-backs to a double back
during her second routine. She really made no errors and got
the croud into
it since
she was having so much fun. She closed with double backs I think in
both of her routines and had her usual fifties rock music.
One of her nice
looking simpler passes was a piked arabian front through to a
full twist
punch front. She commented in her
mini-interview after one of the routines
that she
loved performing again and would like to do it "forever". She
scored all 10's for her second routine and placed second to Moceanu, with
Bogie in third.
Bogie
had the best presentation in my opinion, with great tumbling for her
body type, but she almost sat down on a punch front from a
double back in
the end of her second routine. She
covered very well. The most ironic moment
for me
was when they were announcing her as "The Belarussian
Swan" before
her second routine and a second
later she stumbled on the stairs leading to
the
podium.
I know this doesn't cover the competition too extensively, but
I hope it
gives you a little more idea of what
went on,
Orion

Re: Rock n' roll challenge
Hi all,
I hate to add my voice to the
pleas for help, but I was away and unable to
tape
the Rock 'n' Roll Challenge tonight, and would love if someone can
help me with a copy!
I'll provide any tape, postage, or money needed. I
have a
lot of the competitions from the last couple years, so maybe I can
trade. Sincere thanks to anyone who can help.
ObGymn: I've
worked out a little bit on a "fast track," if that's like a
Tumbletrack (a long trampoline bed in the shape of a
runway), and highly
recommend it. You have space to try tumbling like
tucks and roundoffs
with
the benefit of extra help from the springs. It helped me to learn
good form for backhandsprings
before moving to floor. A
regular
trampoline is good for that too, but the
track is more like the floor in
terms of spring
and has lots of room to travel.

This move is known as a Ford. Luckily she did not do the full
layout-Ford
that President Jerry made famous.
A great meet.
Shannon looked happier than I've seen her for years.
