I absolutely agree with Tara.  I received the book last week and it is
exceptional.  The biographies are especially interesting.  Did you know, for
example, that Tamara Lazakovich (3rd all round in Munich) tragically fell in
with "the wrong crowd" after she retired from gymnastics, was involced in
criminal activity, and died from alcoholism in the early 90s?  (God, what Joan
Ryan could do with THAT information?!  :)

Seriuosly, I highly recommend this book.  It is money well spent.

SILIVAS --

For those of you in the Atlanta area you might want to go to the Cobb
Galleria tomorrow (25 Jan.) and check out a gymnastics clinic being given by
Daniela Silivas for underprivilaged children from "Girls, Inc." This event is
sponsored by Kodak as part of their Olympic buildup.

PEACHTREE --

A little more info on the Peachtree Classic (a.k.a Kodak-Revco Invite) ...
scheduled competitors include Shannon Miller, "along with nine of the top 15
U.S. gymnasts" according to the press release. Teams from Canada also usually
take part. Tickets are available at the Omni box office and the times/dates
again are 28 Jan. (Sunday) 1:30pm-4pm.

For the past couple of years ESPN has televised the Peachtree and I'm
assuming they are the TV outlet again this year.

I have a very difficult time trying to understand the bonus for Level 8 girls
competition.  As I understand it there needs to be a C in combination with a
B or higher.  In Level 8 You can throw a C skill but not get credit for it.
So how do you get Bonus on FX, BB, and UB?  Let me know at

In Helena, MT there is a "little" meet that is gaining in Popularity.  it is
called the Mt Helena Open Invitational.  Many teams from Washington, Idaho,
Montana, Oregon and Alberta, Canada come to this meet.  Mount Royal from
Calgary usually comes.  The club is trying to expand to include a collegate
meet next year.  If you are interested send me an EM at ***@AOL.COM
and I will get that Info to you.

>her favorite store is The Limited Too

Okay minor point here, but it shows exactly how tiny gymnasts are.  The
Limited Too is the children's store of limited if I'm not mistaken.
How many 18 (or 19?) year olds shop at Gap Kids, etc?

I like Gap Kids, and I'm 21.  The clothes are at least a bit fashionable,
and not too many elastic waistbands....

Subject: Leftie thread

Alex & Sharon started the leftie thread.

Heres my uptake;

Research the psych library.
I tend to avoid such texts like the plague but I ended up reading some
interesting stuff when I finally broke down and researched my
learning/communications problems.....

You will find that "lefties" tend to be artists.
Interestingly enough leftie/artists do well
as software engineers and fighter pilots.
Go figure !
It actually takes an artistic bent to do better software engineering...
(Also a significant number of us ambidexterous folk in computers too)

OK, now back to gymn, you need an artistic bent to be a good gymnast.
If you hit it from the total engineering point, you will have a rather odd
performance.  Best way for me to illustrate, is to use the example of
a somewhat famous organist.  His technique is perfect.  But stale.
As an even more famous organist one yelled at his student
"But wheres the FIRE in it ?"

So my guess is that rightie gymnasts are usually engineers rather than artists
and so lack "fire in their routines".

Now yet another one at you....
Left handers are NOT neccessarilt left footers & vice versa.

Anybody got stats on %lefties leftfooters/right footers & %righties in each foot
and how bout stats on ambidexterous folk ?

Next cross reference all this data to gymnastics.

Im serious here, this would be #1 a cool school project, & #2 Ill almost bet
money that most of the list would find this interesting.

I think left/right/ambi foot/hand gymnastics study is a very worthy research
topic.  The coaching implications are incredible.

GO FOR IT !

Although I think Kim is capable of winning the all-around, I'm putting
more faith in her winning a gold in floor ex.  Her tumbling as far as I
can tell is great.  Of course if she wins the all-around, I'll cheer
louder than anyone.
