Sarah writes:

  flip?

Always a point of confusion.  I find back flip to be the nebulous term,
since some people use it to mean back handspring and some to mean back
somersault.  The term "handspring" seems much more descriptive, since it
implies springing from your hands, i.e. placing them on the ground, at some
point, while somersault implies getting around 360 without placing anything
(hopefully) but your feet on the ground.

Distinguishing the term back somi from back handspring becomes crucial
when you're about to spot somebody on one... ;^)

Subject: thoughts on eating disorders

It seems like a lot of energy is spent on the list trying to defend
gymnastics regarding eating disorders, and to show that these disorders exist
in other sports, or life in general.  But whether or not these problems exist
equally in other sports or activities isn't the issue for this list, it seems
to me...because we're all talking about gymnastics, with a unique set of
paramaters that contributes to this problem (perhaps shared to some extent by
similar sports such as figure skating).  I don't think anyone can deny that
there *is* an eating disorder problem associated  with gymnastics.  Even if
the statistic is 20-30 percent, that's 20-30 gymnasts out of a hundred.
That's a lot of young girls and/or women!  I think that many or most women
who did gymnastics can admit that there are real pressures  to look thin in a
leotard for appearance, as well as to be small and thin to perform some of
the demanding tricks (I know I felt it).  If you're naturally small and thin,
it's great!  But as your body hits puberty, just the age when many gymnasts
are peaking (I don't think there are many sports where the optimum
performance age is as young as it is in gymnastics), and you go through
natural changes and weight gain, I think it is difficult to avoid feeling
discouraged in relation to your gymnastics.  And that's just the age when
emotionally many young women are susceptible to insecurity and low
self-esteem, and are perhaps getting a self-esteem boost from their success
in gymnastics.  And this combination seems to me to be a key element in
gymnastics' connection with eating disorders.  If we can admit to and
understand the problem in our sport, there must be ways to work with coaches
and gymnasts, parents and judges to avoid some of the negative feedback a
young woman might get associated with her weight and her gymnastics.  Just my
thoughts....

Anyhow, I mentioned the idea of posting the partial code I have
to see if it would be of help. Someone informed me this afternoon
that some on the list have a full code. Anyway that can be put on the
GYMN homepage? I would like to see the whole thing, though I don't
know how much work it would entail.

I once saw the code of points for sale at a sports store (not even a
gymnastics store).  Otherwise check local gyms.

Well, since we have several FIG brevets on the list, I would certainly
HOPE that some have the full code!!

The Code cannot be reproduced as Jennifer suggests without permission
from the FIG.  Additionally, a key part of the Code is the
illustrations, and to include those would be a significant amt of disk
space.  Even without the illustrations, there is still the issue of
maintenance.  With three Codes (Men, Women, RSG), that's a bit much!

In the USA, the Code can be purchased from USA Gymnastics, and I
assume that in most countries the Code can be purchased from your
governing body.  I'm not sure what the price is but I believe it was
$39.95 per Code from USAG in 1993.

Subject: Shannon Miller '94 Worlds Championships?

Fellow Gymners;
I was wondering if someone could answer a question for me.
I watched the 1994 World Gymnastics team competition last year, and
taped it.  I saw and heard the controversy surrounding the abrupt
departure of Shannon Miller nad Steve Nunno.  How did she win the AA
last year if she left before the Team Championships?  Were they in a
different order than this year's Worlds?  I have been wondering about this
for some time now.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Also, could anyone tell me some of the top finishers (women) of last
year's AA and event championships.
Thanks!
Aaron

Hi everyone, I'm a new gymner from Sydney, Australia. I'm an
ex-gymnast now judge, and um that's about it really.

Worlds is now split up over the cycle with some World Championships
for AA and Individual Apparatus and some as purely a Team
Championship. The only time all Competitions (I, II and II) go
together is in the year immediately before the OG (like this year)
    and at the OG.

At the beginning of 1994, Individual World Championships (Comps II
and III) were held in Brisbane, and this is where Miller won the AA.
Then later in the year Team Worlds (Comp I) was held in Dortmund.
Don't know much about what happened in Dortmund as Australia didn't
make it due to injuries etc.

Nice to meet you all, you'll be hearing from me often,
    Ruth.

Last year there was an individual Worlds in Brisbane Australia where she
won the all- around and beam.  I think Lou Li of China won bars,
Kochetkova Floor, and Gogean Vault. (Never mind I looked it up:)

The all around was Miller(1), Milosovici(2), Kochetkova(3), Gogean(4),
Dawes(5), Podkopayeva(6), Huilan(7), Hategan(8), Khorkina(9), and
Piskun(10).

Vault= Gogean(1), Khorkina(2), Milosovici(3)

Bars= Lou Li(1), Khorkina(2), Kochetkova(3)

Beam= Miller(1), Podkopayeva(2), Fabrichnova(3)

Floor= Kochetkova(1), Milosovici(2), Gogean(3)

Per your question about Elfie Schlagel, yes, she was a gymnast for Canada.
Maybe some of our Canadian subscribers could supply more info about her, but
I have a tape of the 1986 NCAA Women's Nationals, and I believe Elfie was a
medalist on bars (yes, she went to college in the USA--I don't remember
where, and the tape is in the annals of VCR junk...)(Utah won the team comp
that year, BTW).  I share your disbelief with her remarks.  I guess her momma
never taught her that if she didn't have anything nice to say she shouldn't
say anything at all.:)

Just an FYI from your humble

Would anyone happen to be willing to copy the CBC broadcast of Event Finals
for a humble southerner (south of Canada, that is...:))?
I would, of course, provide tape, postage, and my blessing.

(Excuse my ignorance, but do you folks run your VCR's on the same VHS format
as the USA?  I hope so, or my humble request is moot!)

Thanx all,
