I'm assuming that this didn't get sent last time, since I haven't
received it.  I don't know what I did.  I read several messages of
people with Olympic tickets, but no place to stay.  I hope this helps.

Subject: GYMNASTICS TELEVISION TRIVIA

I just had to ask this since I am sure that someone may know the answer:

If you have ever watched CNN's "HEADLINE NEWS", the show always seems to
cut to commericial just prior to the sports section. The Anchor normally is
shown with a display of 9 monitors (3 x 3) behind them and they show different
sport scenes. The bottom center screen has a female gymnast running on the FX
diagonal and throws a RO-ff-full-in. Anyone know who that is? I thought
that it might be Michelle Campi, but I wasn't certain.

Subject: Right or left

In my case, although i am right handed in "real life", my left foot is my
push foot for leaps, and all cartwheels etc. are left. All of the other right
hander's on my team go right in gymnastics. I guess I'm the exception to that
rule.

okay, i'm fairly new to high school gymnastics, (I'm a freshman), and I just
have some questions:

1) tuck jumps 1/1: must our knees really be chest high for b credit?
2) cat leap 1/1: at what angles outward should the knees be?
3) boards positions (vault): kind of a general question, but has anyone here
ever truely vaulted at body length? this is VERY hards for me, esp. since I
am 5'8, so mine board would be well over 6 feet back!!!!

We lost today, so I'm being hard on myself!!

Subject: Introducing myself!

Hi! My name is Letty. I live in Greensburg, Pa. I love gymnastics! I
have been involved in gymnastics since I was about 9 or 10 years old. I am 18
years old. I used to compete for my YMCA team. I started competing when I was
about 14. It took a long time because I kept getting injuries such as a
broken thumb (growth plate), broken pinky, sprained back, tendonitis in both
wrists, etc. I stopped competing and stopped taking classes 2 years ago
because I am a cheerleader for my high school and I had to choose between the
two and with my age getting older and my body getting taller, I had to stop.
I still am a gymnastics teacher for the same place and I have taught since I
was in 8th grade. I still watch and record every competition on TV! I still
subscribe to IG! My favorite gymnast has always been Kim Zmeskal but I really
like to US team this year! Especially Dominique Moceanu. I really like Lilia
P, too. I love them all though! And for my birthday this year, my mom
surprised me with tickets to the Olympics!! I am really glad to join this
club!!

Subject: Judging

When I took up judging artistic gymnastics in 1981 as a naive 16-year old,
I set myself a goal of judging the Olympics by the Year 2004, figuring it
would take 20 years to reach Brevet.  I got up to National Eligible in '92,
but moved to Boston for work. Upon returning to Ontario, I am having to
literally do "double-backs" to re-instate.  Apparently, I have to audit a
beginners' judges course which won't be offered until 1997 -- seemingly
ridiculous for my fourth Code of Points. Until then, I get to judge
recreational meets (a hundred thousand handspring vaults).

So, now that I've been ostracized from judging women's artistic at the
provincial level in Ontario, and pondering on suggestions from my
supporters of the last week, which would be easier* for me to get into?

  a) Judging women's artistic in Quebec -- je parle franglais bien

  b) Judging women's artistic in New York state  -- do you HAVE to judge
compulsories?

  c) Judging men's artistic -- just don't know much about pommel horse

  d) Judging trampoline & tumbling -- can identify the skills

  e) Judging RSG -- don't know anything about value parts (skills)

  f) Judging figure skating -- doesn't pay, but I know the rules

  g) Judging sport aerobics -- does anybody do this yet?

  h) Judging freestyle skiing -- know the skills

  i) Refereeing tennis -- know the rules

(Sorry, no interest in diving or synchronized swimming).

* By "easier", I mean ease of becoming certified (prerequisites, costs,
length of courses, difficulty of exams,...), level of competition you can
judge once certified, minimum number of "political" obstacles, and rate of
advancement up to national & international status.  For example, judging
sport aerobics would be cool if I could take a course now (and not when a
new "Code" comes out in 1997), get certified, judge and be Brevet in, like,
2 years, and if it becomes an Olympic discipline in, say, 2004.

Any insights regarding judging policies in your area would also be greatly
appreciated.

Regards,

Grace

This is one of the 400 Kim fans you're expecting to hear from.  Yes,
Kim has been off for a while, but sometimes a break can increase a persons
desire or drive.  Plus from what I've seen (her fx) her difficulty is as high
as everyone elses.  However, my whole disagreement is with your home field
advantage comment.  It's like no matter what she does, she's doomed to fail.
If she does perform her best and wins a gold medal, people are already saying
the only reason she won is because it's in the US.  I mean give her a chance!
She hasn't even competed yet, and people are knocking her.  All I'm saying is
admire her for what she is trying to do, and wait and she her perform.  Give
her that much of a chance.

Subject: Transportation in Atlanta

Hello folks.  Just got information from ACOG on Olympic
transportation for getting around Atlanta during the games.  For
those with tickets to the artistic competition (Georgia Dome) seems
you folks wont have any headaches going to and from this venue.

Since I will be attending the RSG competition in Athens, Georgia, it
seems I will have to rent a car to get from my hotel which
is in Greensboro, Georgia.  There is no mention of shuttles to and
from Atlanta to Athens.  I wonder if rental cars are still available
though.  Well heres to the latest headache in my Olympic vacation
saga.
