Barani on beam
Yelena Prygunova
of Russia threw a "barani" on beam at
Worlds, with a slight
variation on the twist. It is actually more like a "Cuervo", ie the half
twist is done in pre-flight, as she is actually doing a half
twist and then a
*back* somersault, as opposed to
a *front* somersault with a half twist.
She
performs the skill piked
by the way.

In
the world of trampolining (well the UK one anyway) a barani is a front
somersault
with a late 1/2 twist; a rudi a front somersault with
a late 1 1/2
twists, and a randi
is a front somersault with 2 1/2 twists. A triffis
in
trampolining is
normally any twisting triple somersault, and a fliffis
any
twisting double somersault - no distinction is
made for the amount of twist,
or direction of
rotation (that is normally obvious from the amount and
placing
of twist), eg. rudi-out
triff (forwards triple with 1 1/2 twists in
the end somersault), or full-in full-out triff
(backward triple with full
twist into the first,
and out the last somersault). Finally, I think a triple
twisting
triple back is called a miller? Are
there any other 'nick names'
people know of? (If
there are any mistakes in the above please feel free
to
correct all you trampolining gurus out there).
Of
course I suspect that in gymn all the names are
muddled :-)
Hope this helps.

The description of the Quast is the same as the Thomas, a full turn hop in
the handstand phase of the back giant. The men's code give
the credit to
Ralf Quast by naming the skill
after him in the code. Not sure why
seems
like his performance would have been long
after Thomas. Thanks for the

barani, etc
This
is something odd, since several people have done moves called
a Barani and they wre actually different moves. Christina Grigoras
(ROM)
was the first person I know of who did the
front 1/2 (two feet take off and
landing). I know
that Polokova (TCH) did it in the mid to late
'80s.
Now, IG has always described Dobre
(ROM)'s '87 gold medal winning routine
as having
the series barani ff
layout. Was it a side aerial? One foot
take off,
or was it two feet?
NOw, my question is
this: Is a 'BARANI' and aerial round-off or a
front
with 1/2 turn. The difference is take off. Aerial round-off is one
foot
take off, whereas front 1/2 implies two feet
take off. A two foot landing
would
be required, else it would be a side aerial.
So is there a difference?
Barani, aerial RO, and Side aerial?

Elite Regional
My daughter's gym is hosting our Region's Elite
Regional in January. If you
are going to be in the
greater Los Angeles area, it will be a chance to see
some
good gymnastics. I would love to see a good turn-out because so many
times when the girls become optional level gymnasts their
families and
friends stop attending meets. Here's
what I know:
January 20 - Elite compulsory exercises
January 21 - Elite optional exercises, plus levels 8, 9, and 10
Charter Oak Gymnastics
(Gliders)
841
N. Dodsworth Ave
Covina, CA
This is the home gym of Vanessa Atler
and Jamie Danztcher. I don't know if
they'll
be performing or not, but they will probably be around with their
parents helping at the meet. If you have questions about the
meet please
e-mail me directly, I'm the parent
responsible for running it. We
don't
have meet times yet but I will post them as
soon as I get them (probably
the second week of
January). If you reply to me now I
won't get back to
you until after January 2, I'll
be away from my computer on vacation (so
please
don't be offended).

New Member (kind of...)
Hi Everyone!
I've been receiving messages
from Gymn for a couple of weeks now, but haven't
had a chance to introduce myself. But I finally have some
time (I'm a
teacher, off for a snow day) so here
goes....
My name is Ellen and I am 23 years old. I am a music teacher,
and I
live in Mastic Beach, Long Island, New York.
I am a former gymnast and I
lifetime fan of
gymnastics. I love the list and the web page, because I have
finally found people as into gymnastics as I am! To give you
an idea, I've
been getting IG for 10 years, I have
almost every televised meet on tape
since 1986,
and the highlight of my trip to California two summers ago was
visiting the not-yet-finished Hall of Fame and meeting and
talking gymnastics
with Glenn Sundby. I am going to Atlanta this summer, I'm seeing the Women's
Team Optionals.
I am so excited, and I joined the Olympic Fan Club because
they said that being a member can make you eligible to meet
Nadia (my
childhood idol) and Bart, the fanclub spokespeople. I think they saw me
coming....
I mostly just follow women's gymnastics
and I've always liked watching the
gymnasts from
Romania and the former Soviet Union more than watching the
Americans. But
that has changed during the last couple of years. I really
like Kerri Strug and the girls
from the Colorado Aerials these days, and of
course
Shannon Miller. My alltime favorite gymnast is Oksana
Omeliantchik and
I like Alexandra Marinescu, Lavinia Milosovici, Oksana Fabrichnova
and Dina
Kotchetkova. I really hope to see Lavinia, Gina Gogean, and
Svetlana
Boginskaya in Atlanta, as well as the older American girls. I respect
them
immensely and believe they have all gotten
better and much nicer to watch as
they've
matured.
Anyway, I love the list so far, and you will all be hearing
from me from time
to time. Have great holidays,
and I'll be talking to everyone soon!

layouts on beam
Which skill carries I higher value on beam:
(1) backhandspring
layout-layout or
(2) round off layout (two foot
landing)
Are two foot landing skills rated higher, if so why.
Do
people out there favor to see gymnast perform some variation of
consecutive layouts on beam? For instance Podkopaeva does not throw
consecutive
layouts, neigher does Horkina.
I
also notice that the Chinese are favoring the roundoff
layout (two foot
landing) these days.
Do
any of the Chinese go into consecutive layouts on
beam
with a one hand backhand spring as Yang Bo used to do?
thanks,

Well, a two foot
straight body layout is worth more (it's a D, whereas
the
step-out is a C). When a gymnast
performs a layout step-out, it
isn't a true
layout, since they tend to be lower, and the gymnast doesn't
actually show a true layout position (although Yang Bo might
be an
excpetion). On beam, it is also harder to control a two foot landing.
The combination round-off
to two foot layout is a series with change of
direction,
B/D, which has a special connection bonus of .2 (if I
understand
what I know of the code correctly).
The backhandspring layout
layout only has a .1 connection bonus,
and of course there is no
potential value part
bonus for the extra D that the two foot layout
gives. That might explain why more gymnasts are
now doing the two foot
layout.

I happen to find consecutive layouts a
bit boring, since they've been
done by so many
gymnasts for so long, so I think it's nice to see a
change.

Not that I've seen
lately.
Hope
that was helpful (and accurate?)
Chris.

Almost correct on all counts. However, a round-off
is considered a sideward
element with no direction
change so there is no special connection bonus for
a
round-off back layout (two feet).
Also there is no special connection
bonus
at all for an backward tumbling with only two elements or a series that
is ff, ff,
layout step-out.
Remember, however, that in NCAA competitions ALL back
layouts are D's and
able to get any bonus
connections based on a D value.
That is why at
collegiate meets in the US
we see A LOT of ff, ff,
layout step-out.....B+B+D
= +0.2 special connection and +0.1 for a D. After that, the gymnast needs
only one more D and she will have full bonus.
