Womens European Championships 1996
==================================
Birmingham,
England 16-19 May, 1996.
Seniors All-Around
------------------
Well
well well Liliya Podkopayeva snatched it
right at the depth from
Svetlana Boguinskaya who
was leading in the first three rotations.
Sveta
has a lead of 0.082 going into the last rotation, but Lilia
had floor as her last apparatus. Lilia can always tumble but
her
current choreography seemed to be much better
than her previous
routine's. She was the last to
go in the whole competiton and the
audience was amazing as all the attention was focused on
her. She did
not disappoint the crowd as she
performed a fantastic routine and was
awarded the
best score of the competition by with 9.912. Svetlana
(going
on vault just before Lilia took to the floor) only scored
9.731.
Lilia's
tumbling on floor still included her famous double front
somersault,
a front tumbling sequence, and ending with full-twisting
double
back. Her dance elements were much better, there were less
standing-around-grasping-for-breath,
it seemed that Liliya was at her
fittest at the moment. She later expressed that she was
obviously happy
with the results, especially since
she did not go to San Juan Worlds
because of an
injury.
Svetlana had upgraded the difficulty of her routines a lot.
The bars
used to be her worst event and people criticised her for having no
release
moves back in 1992. She now had a Tkatchev together
with a
double layout dismount. Her beam started
with a front somi into
immediate
tuck jump. Other elements included a double spin, front somi,
splits into flick/layout/layout, and ending with a double
tuck dismount.
Her floor started with a full-twisting double tuck and
ending with a
2 and 1/2 twists punch front. She later admitted that she is
now
working harder than ever and enjoying herself
immensely after a 2 year
break from it. She had
left Bela Karolyi's and is
now training back in
Minsk.
Lavinia Milosovici again did her stuff quietly and it's
another
bronze medal for her. She only qualified
for the All-Around final
because the defending
European champion Gina Gogean fell just before
her bars dismount during the team competition. Gina lost her
grip
in a giant swing just before the dismount and
was rather fortunate that
she crashed to the mat
on her knees and avoided any injury. Octavian
Belu
later emphasised that the gymnasts should be allowed
to warm-up
more on the competition apparatus
because the gymnasts health-being
should be the
major concern and it should not be dictated by TV
schedules
demands.
Simona Amanar
looked quite solid in fourth place, there were a few
very
minor errors which kept her out of the medals
but on another day her
performance could well be
enough for a top three.
Dina Kochetkova and
Svetlana Khorkina both had problems throughout
the
competition. Dina was
unsteady on the beam, she struggled a lot on
holding a handstand, and again lost her balance on a flick
series.
Svetlana's problem was more obvious as she fell off the beam in
her
cartwheel into Gaynor combination. Svetlana
looked to be lacking her
sparkle that was so
crowd-pleasing last year. Her injury may be
bothering
her much more than she was letting on, and do not be
surprised
if she retires after Atlanta.
Vasilki Tsavdaridou from Greece continued her emergence as a
top
gymnast with a good 7th place. She deserves
more media attention
and the fact that she comes
from a not too fanciable gymnastics
country such as Greece should not hinder that.
Ludivine Furnon was the oly French girl in the AA final (because the
other French gymnasts only did three or less apparatus in
the team
comp the day before) but her floor was
just so entertaining. The French
floors are the
best around in my opinion. They are very sazzy
and
expressive with modern dance and great
tumbles. Furnon of course
was
the first French girl ever to win a apparatus medal when she won
bronze in Sabae Worlds in
1995.
Joana Juarez did well for Spain at 10th, but Yelena Piskoun was
dissapointing
down at 11th. Piskoun had been the team leader
of
Belarus for the past couple of years and I wonder if Boguinskaya's
comeback has anything to do with it, though the two ladies
seemed
quite close (someone told me that Bogie is
now training with Piskoun
in
Minsk with the same coach).
Britain's best Annika Reeder did well to
finish at 13th, seeing that
she only qualified
back at 26th place after team comp (the two gymnast
per
country rule in the AA anabled her to qualify for
AA). She did
not fall off bars but in fact she did
a quiet good routine on that
apparatus. Her floor
though was not as good as recently but overall
this
was a much more all-around performance from her than in recent
meets.
A few words on the team competition...
Britain did very well to finish
in 8th place which
I think was their highest ever placing. It was
a
good team effort as all five girls allowed were used (only Reeder
performed on all four pieces). So a congratulations to
Annika Reeder,
Zita Lusack, Jenny cox, Sonia Lawrence and
Gemma Cuff. According to the
BBC, it will be Annika and Sonia who
will be representing Britain in
the forthcoming
Olympic games at Atlanta.

Womens Europeans (Juniors AA)
Womens European Championships 1996
==================================
Birmingham,
England 16-19 May, 1996.
Juniors All-Around
------------------
Alexandra
Marinescu of Romania retained her juniors
AA title despite
a lack lustre
perforamce. I guess she is typically Romanian -
solid
instead of spectacular. Instead the crowd were cheering loudly for
Italian Adriana Crisci who was more spectaculor.
People wondered
if she would have won if she was
from a gymnastically stronger
country. Viktoria Karpenko from Ukraine
was third. I was expecting
more from Viktoria but she was not as impressive as I thought
she
would be. Elvire Teza of France was third with the highest score of
the competition with 9.775 on bars. Little Elena Zamolodchikova of
Russia was amazing at 5th, she scored well in all apparatus except
the beam where she fell attempting a spectaculor
flick series.
Lisa Mason could be Britain's best ever yet! I was not
expecting a
British junior girl to do a full-twisting somi
on beam, and a
completely stuck double tuck
dismount. She went last in compeition
on floor and the crowd was cheering like mad. Her only fault
was
on the bars which had always been Britain's
worst apparatus. The
otehr
British girl Natalia Lucitt also fell on bars.
Natalia is
only 12 and I've already seen her in
four different meets in the last
couple of
years.

Re: Euros All Around Comp.
I returned late last night from Birmingham
very tired, but very fulfilled,
after watching two
of the most stunning competitions not seen for a long time
in the UK. I am referring of course to the Senior and Junior
European WAG
Championships.
I will not go into a detailed
comp report, as this is Sherwin's field, but I
would
like to convey some of the flavour of this meet.
The senior competition was certainly of extraordinary quality,
with I am sure
was
enhanced by the presence of Svetlana Boguinskaia
who transformed the meet
from just another battle of the giants, Podkopayeva
vs. Milosovici, to
something
which had the audience the edge of its seats right to the last
second of Podkopayeva's stunning fx. To see this elegant young lady return to
compete against gymnasts of another generation not only is unparalled in
Gymnastics but earned the great respect of the British
audience who applauded
her yesterday. The message
was " Welcome back Svetlana, we still love you over
here
! "
Also all credit must be given to Annika Reeder, who was in
the same group of
gymnasts as Boguinskaia
for the rotations, and followed her in the order on
bars
and beam. To immeadiately follow a gymnast of Boguinskaia's experience
must
have been a daunting experience. This was apparent on the beam where she
had to follow Boguinskaia's almost
flawless performance ( slight wobble on the
spin
turns ). Reeder battled on through her routine, with a couple of
stumbles, but was obviously relieved when she touched down
the landing. This
competition was to be a test of
her ability to focus and stay calm, which she
did
so sucessfully.
The comp. came
to a tantalising
climax with Boguinskaia performing the
last
vault and Podkopayeva
the last floor ex. of the comp. ( Was
this stage managed
? ) Up to this point Boguinskaia
had been leading the field so immediately
following
Boguinskaia's vault Podkopayeva
new exactly what to do on her floor
ex. to take the championship. What followed then was one of the
most
incredible display of floor skills which
resulted in a standing applause not
only from the
audience but also from Boguinskaia herself who was
obviously
delighted with Podkopayeva's
performance.
The Junior competition was
equally as captivating but I do not want to go into
too
much detail as I am aware that Sherwin may be reporting this.
However...
From a coaches point of view this was probably more technically
interesting ( apart from the moves that coach Adrian Stan
performed testing
the A-bars ! Good PR for robustness
of Continental bars :)
Because of the size of the gymnasts there was a
greater variation of moves
than in the Senior
competition. This was most apparent on the vault ( as
I was
sitting next to the vaulting horse ) In the Senior comp. nearly
all were
Yurchenko based, using the technique to
gain the most height of second flight
for the
taller gymnast ( Boguinskaia included ). The Juniors, however were
able to
perform the full range of Yurchenko, Tsuks and handspring fronts. This
was
not only good from the audience point of view, but also gave the coaches
plenty of exercise rapidly changing the springboard
positions in the hurried
frenzy of the apparatus
warm ups.
I will close now as I did not
intend to give a comp. report.
Full scores,
as live as possible from the comp., can be found by
logging into
the BAGA web page

TV alert
TV alert :
ITV Channel
4 will be screening a programme called " Fair
Game " at 8.00 pm
UK time Monday 20th May. which
is about coaching techniques in UK. According
to
an article in " The Mail on Sunday " today, written by Kim Willsher in
their ' Inside
Story ' column, the programme claims that British
Gymnastic
Coaching produces ' over worked, underfed Olympic hopefulls whose dreams are
dashed
if they do not develop a womanly shape'.
The article also goes on to say :
" While America has introduced new gidelines for women's gymnastics,
folllowing the death of Christy Henrich
from anorexia in 1994, Britain has
adopted sterner
techniques to produce champions, bringing in Romanian Adrian
Stan as National Coach three years ago. His first move was
to introduce weight
and height charts. "
The
article also goes on to describe the case of the growth rate of '
identical ' twins where one is alledged
to be stunted by gymanstics training
method.
It looks like the UK is going to be
subjected to a hot public debate on the
justification
of our coaching techniques, similar to what has happened in the
US last year.
There is more seriously which I
consider to be a most insiduos piece of
journalism which if true must be thoroughly
investigated.
The article claims that quote " In one piece of
film, not included in the
documentary, an unnamed
coach tells an 'overweight' young gymnast " They
learned
at Belsen how to lose weight. You don't eat.
""
This I think is a dreadfull, true or not,
and I am sure that all British
coaches would
disgusted at such things being
said.
I think ' The Mail on Sunday ' such be called to task this one .
Who said it
?
Many parents in my Gym Club may have read this
article, as will many other
parents
of UK gymnasts, therefore we as coaches must be prepared to answer any
questions on our coaching methods which are bound to arise
as a result of this
article and programme.
We must make sure that all the evidence
presented in this programme is based
on fact and not media hype. ( It is
strange how ' The Mail on Sunday ' have
chosen
this weekend to break this story to coincide with the Euro's )
