IBM AGI commentary part 2
IBM AGI, cont'd.
What a variety of
vaults! The gymnasts demonstrated quite a bag of tricks,
and
my position for viewing vault. (It
helped that they showed almost every
vault in slow
motion on instant replay too!). Mohini Bhardwaj (USA) led
the
field on women's vault with a 9.737 with a
pair of 1.5 twisting Yurchenkos
(the first landed with a hop, the second landed with a large
step).
Bhardwaj is a great vaulter,
in true Brown's style (Wendy Bruce, Brandy
Johnson). Oxana
Knijnik (UKR) threw outstanding piked
Cuervos (handspring
on,
half-twist off into back somersault), with a distinct twist right at the
extended "heads up" vertical position. Her vaults were simply outstanding.
Her
second vault incurred a hop, resulting in a 9.693 average. Ji Liya
adeptly asserted the
significant improvement of the Chinese women in
vaulting
and tumbling, vaulting Yurchenkos with *delayed* 1.5
twist.
Alexandra Marinescu (ROM), after some
confusion with her vault score,
finished with a
9.618 average for her pair of Yurchenko-1.5 vaults, although
both had definite leg breaks before landing. Ji's teammate Liu Xuan,
rounded
out the top five on this apparatus,
vaulting Yurchenkos-1.5, each with a
step. Two Chinese women in
the top five on vaulting?? wow. In addition to
Bhardwaj,
Marinescu, Ji, and Xuan, the Yurchenko 1.5 was also
competed by
Elena Grosheva (RUS) (delayed twist,
sat on her first vault) and Katie Teft
(USA) (tucked; sat down on both attempts). The only gymnast to
vault a
Yurchenko double full was Elena Piskoun (UKR), who dragged her left hand on
the ground for her first attempt and took a hop on her
improved second
attempt for a 9.525 average and
7th on vault.
Roza Galieva
(RUS) second attempt at her piked front half out was
tight in
the air and stuck on landing (the first
attempt was lacking). Miho
Hashiguchi
(JPN) vaulted Yurchenko-fulls -- how often do we see
those
anymore? Her first attempt was low, but the
second was a definite
improvement. Diana Plaza
(ESP) attempted a Yurchenko with 1/2 twist to
the
horse, 1/2 off into front layout, but sat down
on her second for a 9.143
average, while her
teammate, Mercedes Pacheco, vaulted low piked
fronts.
Mirela Turgulan
(ROM) successfully threw the same vault as Plaza, but was
short on both vaults (9.518). Svetlana Boguinskaya
vaulted open piked fronts
with
1/2 out. Laetitia
Begue (FRA) threw a Yurchenko-1/2, but the twist
was
at the end, not the beginning, of the
vault. Teammate Elvire
Teza also
threw a
Yurchenko-1/2, with the half twist coming off the horse, but she sat
down her first attempt.
The second was improved, with Teza achieving
an
arched layout position on the front somi.
George and I were were
constantly awed by bars -- it was simply unreal.
Perhaps the judges
couldn't differentiate among the wide variety of skills,
resulting
in a four way tie for third. Piskoun impressed
everyone; her
full-twisting hop has got to be one
of the best; she scored a 9.775, the
highest score
of the night. Bhardwaj slung her full-twisting double
layout
dismount (9.312). Begue, Teza, Grosheva, Liu, and maybe
more (my notes are
slightly sketchy) all swung
inverted grip giants, with Teza releasing from
inverts into a double front dismount (9.70), and Grosheva (9.70) and Liu
(9.70) released
from inverts into tight piked Jaegers. (And yes, George and
I saw several
Higgins rolls by the end of the bars competition!) By
contrast,
the many double layout dismounts looked almost simple. Boguinskaya
has a very pretty 1.5 pirrouette
(9.637).
Other notable skills included Begue's
Kim salto (reverse hecht release into
front
somi, catching on the same side of the bar as the
release), which
notched her only a 9.575. Teza cruised
through some unique combinations
(hope that they
show her routine on TV!) including a German giant
into
Tkatchev facing the "wrong way" on the bars. Also heading the wrong way
were Sheremeta (9.637) on a giant,
and Galieva (9.712), who did a wrong-way
Tkatchev, shoot through to the low bar plus a nice high piked Jaegar. Her
double
layout dismount was somewhat low, however.
Risa Sugawara (JPN)
surprised
me on bars with a high Tkatchev and a double front
dismount with
1/2 twist between the first and second somi. Her teammate Hashiguchi had a
simple bars set but ended, I believe (?), with a triple
twist, also a
surprise.
While Liu Xuan's difficult routine (inverts --> Jaeger, free-hip
front somi
transition
from low to high, Tkatchev, double layout) satisfied
our high
expectations of what the Chinese can do
on bars, her teammate Ji had
problems,
losing momentum on a giant blind, ticking her feet on the low bar
losing all momentum, and then dismounting with a simple
double pike (8.825).
Both Romanians experienced slight breaks pirrouetting on bars: Turgulan
(9.362)
had to pause after her full pirrouette
on the low bar, and also had
some form breaks,
notably on her full-hop. Marinescu needed a check
after
her giant blind change to full pirrouette in the other direction. Marinescu
made it through the rest cleanly however, dismounting with a
1/2 in 1/2 out
(or maybe the judges gave it credit
for a full-out) and a 9.70, giving her a
share of
third.
On to tonight's competition!
Yours in gymnastics,
Rachele - and - George

I'm confused -- how can
you do a Yurchenko 1/2 twist to the horse, 1/2
twist
to front layout off? Was it maybe just a regular 1/2 on? (In
other words,
did she attempt a
"Phelps"?)
:)

"E" Elements
I was wondering if someone could list for what
moves are "E" moves,
most notedly on the floor exercise.
I know that a
triple twist and a double layout are both "E" moves,
but what is that value of a tucked full-in, a piked full-in, a double
twist,
etc.? Does adding a whip before
these moves add value? How
about adding a punch front, before or after?
Also,
what bar moves/releases/and dismounts are "E" moves?
(This
is a lot to ask, but any answers would be welcome!)

E Moves
In response to Katies Jaye's questions---
Examples of E moves on
Floor:
FIG Code #
1.501 Tuck jump or hop with one leg horizontally
extended forward and 2/1
turn in the air
8.502
Double Salto forward
8.504 Double salto back with
1/1 twist on the first salto (Tougikova)
8.506
Double salto back with 1/1 twist on the second salto (Chusovitina)
8.507
Double salto back with 2/1 twist
(Silivas)
8.508 Double arabian salto
These
are in addition to the triple and the double layout that were
mentioned.
The tucked full in as well
as the piked full in are D elements in
international competition. A double twist is a C element. Adding a whip or
punch
front before or after these moves may make the series eligible for
special connection bonus. That is really to
complicated to go into, due to
the variety of
rules, however if you have
something in particular in mind
you can e-mail
me.
The FIG Code of Points is available from USA Gym. Their telephone number is
1-800-4-USAGYM.
Hope
this helps,
Myra

Well, I botched
that one, eh? =) In my notes I have it written
down as
"Yurchenko 1/2 on, 1/2 off" --
but if I try to remember it, I picture a
forward
landing. So the answer is, I'm not
sure. Several other Gymners
were at the meet, so
maybe one of them can set me straight...
