Bican did not go home; she will have surgery here in Atlanta.  She tore her
ACL in training on a Yurchenko double full, on the 13th.  I'm not sure that
the coaches called the federation -- Belu remarked that there was a seven
hour time change from Romania to Atlanta, and that required six days to
acclimate... therefore, it was too late to call for a seventh gymnast.  Also,
it appears that their 8th gymnast (Camille? who competed at 96 Worlds? I'm
very vague on this, but it *wasn't* Cacovean) has a back injury and so wasn't
available anyways.

Actually, the judges *do* judge the routines, but they do not hand out the
scores and the judging is not in any way "official" scoring.  The judges do
practice by judging the routines, however.

For compulsories, podium training gives everyone a chance to see how other
teams are interpreting the moves.  For example, all of the Chinese (and some
Russian) women end the first pass on floor with a bounce into split leap,
whereas most other teams just have a bounce (which is how the compulsory was
dictated).  The change to split leap is the Chinese way of stylizing the
routine. Podkopayeva, on the jump full turn on floor, beat her legs... only
gymnast I know of to do that.

Subject: Will NBC Deliver?

Does anyone on this list know if USA Gymnastics or Frank Endo
or another merchant will have tapes of the Olympics for sale
after the competition has ended?

I am asking because NBC has said they are going to have a LOT
of those damned fluff pieces which means if a gymnast is not
an American or in the top 6, we'll never get to see them on
NBC broadcasts.  I, for one, am going to miss the Triplecast.
It was nice to actually SEE some routines from gymnasts who
weren't in the running for medals.

Perhaps someone on this newsgroup who lives in another country
would be willing to trade a copy of their broadcast for a copy
of the US broadcast?

I wonder if NBC is going to do the typical "show 3 routines, cut
to a track and field event, show 2 more routines, cut to diving for
five minutes, etc..."  I just wish they would show the different
sports in blocks instead of jumping back and forth.  I have a feeling
a lot of us who tune in to the Olympics to actually WATCH the sports
are going to be disappointed.

I read in USA Today that Amanda Borden has decided to turn professional
after the Games, and will not be attending the University of Georgia
after all.  Apparently she has an offer to go on tour.   I didn't
realize that a gymnast who is basically ranked about #5 in the U.S.
would have so many professional money-making opportunities.  Apparently
Amanda has been recognized as a very charismatic performer.

Greetings all,

We are leaving for Atlanta on Friday.  We have tickets  for 9:00 sunday
morning women's gymn and monday morning men's gymn.  Does anyone who has
been there or is there now know how the park and ride and buses on N I-75
are running.  We are planning on being at the lots around 6 am but need to
know what to expect.  Sounds like the MARTA system parking and such are
jammed packed.

Thanks for your help

Hi,

I am heading to Atlanta this weekend for gymnastics on Sunday and Monday
and would like to know the best way to get to the Georgia Dome from
Union City (southwest side of Atlanta).  I was planning on driving
to a park and ride lot, but they sound like they might fill up quick.

Any suggestions?  Go ahead and try the park and ride lot (early)?
Or just take a bus all the way into downtown?

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks.

Both CBC and SRC (French) use the same cameras, but they have different
production teams. So you never know who one will show and not the other,
and who will show what live versus taped.  Bernard Petiot, coach of Club
Gymnix, will do commentary for SRC, and Carol Orchard, coach of Sport
Seneca, will comment for CBC.

Also, CBC NewsWorld (cable) will provide a great deal of coverage from
the same cameras, but again different production crew.

BTW, Lise (Arsenault) Goertz, a '72 & '76 Canadian Olympian and
esteemed Brevet candidate judge, is doing the French announcing at the
Georgia Dome.

To all those at podium training,

I was just curious as to your predictions of the outcome of the competition
in Atlanta now that you've seen the gymnast.  Can Shannon actually win the
AA gold?  WHat about Moc?  Also, do y'all foresee Kerri qualifying for any
event finals or perhaps AA?  Thanks!

Hey!

If anyone plans on taping soley off of CBC French (which I don't understand
but still love the gymnastics), I will be taping ALL of NBC (is that the
right letters?) coverage of gymnastics, however, since the routines shown
may be different I was interested in trading after the olympics so I could
have coverage of both.  If you want to talk about it write me please!

Hi everyone,
All of this talk about Atlanta being so crowded and no parking spaces is
scaring me. I will be there on Monday and seeing the womens team on Tuesday
(as well as volleyball and baseball later in the week). I got my
accomidations through the Olympic Travel Network, and when I got all of the
information they gave me a parking lot and said I had a spot reserved. Am I
just being naive to expect that I will have a spot waiting for me? Can anyone
who is there already (especially someone who is also with the Olympic Travel
Network) let us know how everything is? Also, I have two days there where I
have no events to go to. I have a couple of things planned, but if anyone who
is already down there (or lives there, although I heard all of the Atlanta
natives are long gone) has some recommendations, that would be great. 2 days
to go........(5 for me).......Ellen

Although Amanda may not be the top rated gymnast have the most difficult
skill and dance elements or be among the top three, she is DEFINITELY my
favorite US gymnast.  I love watching her.  She doesn't just DO gymnastics,
she PERFORMS gymnastics.  Of all the gymnasts vying for the seven spots on
the Olypmic team, Amanda was the one I was routing for the most (though I
did want to see Dawes and Miller make it so that the rest of the world would
see that gymnastics isn't JUST for little girls).  I am very happy for her
and would go to see her perform as a professional if the opportunity arises.

Count me in as well.  I will diligently tape ALL of NBC's gymnastics coverage
and would be VERY grateful if I could trade tapes with someone who happens to
record all of CBC's English (or French) coverage.  You know we'll at least get
to see the Canadian gymnasts ( and maybe some of the other countries that don't
rank 1-3) on the Canadian broadcast.

Be sure to tune in Saturday and Sunday afternoon this weekend for extended
gymnastics coverage.  Saturday will feature session 1 (ROM & GER).

On Sunday at 2:00 pm there will be a major load of women's session 1 & 2.
Full routines, no fluff of the Romanians, Belarussians and Ukrainians with
who knows who mixed in. For you guys who just wanna see routines, the
afternoon shows should be a fiesta!

The night time shows will have our usual fluff and we will concentrate on the
top gymnasts. There will be more time allocated to gymnastics in prime time
than ever before.

Now remember guys, the reason there is no TripleCast is that it was not
economically feasible.

We will do our best to chronicle the competition. But quite honestly, the
best compliment I can get is from my Mother who will tell me about all the
new gym stars she now cares about. And she will also tell me how she cried
when so-and-so won the Gold.

So there you have it ----from the Georgia Dome Parking Lot.

I know there is a lot of concern about the gymnastics being cut because of
fluff pieces. However, NBC has said that 50% of it's programming will be
gymnastics, so even if half of it is fluff (and I do think that's a little
high) there will be a lot of time devoted to actual routines.

This is all being said with a smile--please take it in the spirit in which it
is intended:)

Okay, strap on the PC handcuffs and shut my mouth.  Meg and Ben took
exception (?) to my comments about the men's team putting on a skin show for
the crowd in G'boro.  Forgive me, but I love to look at a well defined body.
I think it's exciting (not sexually) to watch the flex and stretch of
individual muscles through the course of a gymnastics routine.  I also liked
the _LIFE_ magazine pictoral of the Olympic Atheletes without the hinderence
of clothes.  The human body can be a beautiful piece of art.  Atheletes work
long and hard sculpting their bodies as well as perfecting their individual
sports.  I, for one, like to admire the fruits of their hard labor.

To answer Ben...yes, I think it would be cool to see the women's team in two
piece workout gear.  The six-packs they tote up front are awesome.  You can
make them out under the leotard, but I think a greater appreciation would
come from seeing the ripples of the skin.  No, I'm not a flake.  It just
takes my breath away to contemplate how much work went into the creation of
such a physique.

To answer Meg...The men looked solid as in "on".  No MAJOR screw-ups.  I'm
afraid my brain doesn't pick up the double entendre as quickly as my fingers
type :).  Of course they looked solid in the other sense too.

I apologize for offending the feminist sensibilities of anyone.  Please don't
shoot back for my use of the word feminist--I am proud to call myself one!

Vanessa

P.S. to Ben & Meg:  Thanks for keeping me on my toes!

On this general front, is anyone going to be able to make copies of
the plain ol' NBC broadcast (with major liposuction on the fluff) for those
of us who are busy and/or not within ready access of a VCR (me :) and
probably others too)?
BTW, As far as I know on any piracy/copyright issues that may crop

involved.
