Quick note from New Orleans
Well, right now I'm in a hotel just a
little ways away from the
SuperDome, where Nationals are being held this year. We had to go over
today
to get our tickets, which gave us a good opportunity to look
around. The SuperDome is *huge*; the person we got the tickets from
said
that it seated 69,000-71,000, depending on
the configuration. Needless
to say, they will *not* be using the whole SuperDome for gymnastics.
About half of it is the
actual competition gym. Then
there's a smaller
practice gym, set aside from the
competition gym by a curtain, and beyond
the
practice gym is Astroturf -- the Saints have a game at the SuperDome
on Sunday, and kickoff time is 12 noon!
I got to see
a few gymnasts working out briefly -- Dominique Dawes (from a
distance), Amanda Borden, Dominique Moceanu. Lots of new faces,
also.
Does anyone else find the scheduling for this year just a
little on the
creative side? In past years they've always combined
senior and junior men,
which is a good thing
because 1) there are usually about 10 junior menu and
2) there
usually aren't many spectators for the men (it's usually my, my
mother, and the gymnasts' parents ;). And if you're talking about filling
a stadium the size of the SuperDome,
even just half of it...it's just not
happening
with junior men, unless there's some major demographic switch
this year. Also,
what's the "Junior Women's Optionals
I" and "Junior
Women's Optionals
II?" Is that because compulsories
are being eliminated
after 1996? How will that work?
(will they do vault & bars one day, then
beam & floor the next, or will they compete full optionals twice?)
Well, better get to bed. Sr. Men's compulsories at 10 AM tomorrow!

Mo Huilan
has a twin sister name Mo Fang, she is a gymnast also but she
is not on the national team. There is a profile of Mo in the Gym
Star
summer 1995 issue (issue #12).

Re: movies
Martie,
There is a movie, I think it's called Gym-kata (I haven't seen it)
that
has karate and gymnastics, I don't know which gymnast is in it
but
I seem to remember it might be Thomas.
Another movie is
American Anthem, it's with the good looking USA
guy
from the 88 Olympics (You can see I'm terrible with names),
this movie
was not really good but it had lots of gymnastic
tricks.
By the way, the newest one, Congo. One of the
gorillas is David St.
Pierre, who is also
trying a come back at gymnastics and just
qualified
for nationals.
I'm sure there are many other with good
gymnasts that are not about
gymnastics
as such. Those are three I thought off when you asked.

Does
anyone know any good movies with gymnasts on them. I knw Troop
Beverly Hills has a gymnsat
on it. She has her own beam and I saw a
poster
from IG on her wall. :) It wasn;t
totally about gymnastics but I
thought it was
cool. Also the War of the Roses had a character who
was
a gymnast but it wasn't really important.
There is also a Dosney movie
called
"Lefty" about a one armed gymnat. I haven't
seem it yet though.
Thanks. :)

Re: Competition Standings
I think that, at least
the coaches, know where they are in
competition.
If they have access to the computer screen, they can tell
very
fast how things are going.
When my son was
competing, if we have a boy that had good competition
for
the gold, parents and coaches kept an eye for the scores of both
boys
and we knew how much our boy needed to win. In the same token,
when
my son won regional championships, some of the event gold medals
did
not surprise his coach, but he was very excited and surprised to
see
my son win the AA. Of course we didn't even know my son's
competition
since our region is so big.
I guess when you get
to elite levels and you have only one competing
class
on the floor, it is easy to keep track, and I'm sure the coaches
and
parents know.

Hello
Gymners!
In preparation for the
National Championships, I of course had to
watch
last years competition. (I am
relieved to know that I am not
the only person who
records every meet shown on TV!)
This lead to me
watching the 92' games and
the last three Worlds as well.
The question I have
been dying to ask is this: do the gymnasts know
what
their standings are while they are competing? Do they know what
score
they need to win?
After the all-around in Barcelona, Shannon tells NBC that she
didn't even know what place she was in, but I distinctly got
the
impression from the look on her face that she
knew she'd lost the
gold. In Sydney in '94, she also says that she
didn't know what place
she was in, but she and
Steve were clearing celebrating as if
victorious. Most importantly, at last year's
Nationals, did Shannon
know that Dom was
uncatchable before she vaulted?
Hopefully those of you
have attended meets would know if
there is some
type of running scoreboard, or if the coaches seem to
be
keeping track of the scoring in some way.
Also, I'd like to just
hear everyone's
opinion of this.
Thank you,
Katie

And don't forget
"Spitfire" which was a topic of conversation on this list a few
months ago (and also stars two of Brown's Russian coaches as
... Evil Russian
Coaches!)

Kurt
Thomas. Don't waste your time
seeing it. Though it was
funny when the pommels magically appeared on a rock. :)

Mitch Gaylord. Acting is not
his strong point.

Movies
There was also a television movie which
covered Nadia's life up to the 1979
Worlds. Compared to Gymkata,
Amercan Anthem, et al, it was not bad. Nadia
herself
has commented that there were some inaccuracies, and that the woman
who protrayed her as a teen was
somewhat larger than she had been in 1976,
but the
facts in general are pretty much there, and the acting overall is
adequete. You actually get to see some real
gymnastics, as well (I believe
Marcia Frederick did some of the stuntwork).
BTW, if any of you out there were fans
of "My So-Called Life", you may be
interested
to know that the young girl who played the lead character's little
sister is a gymnast.
I think her name is Lisa Whilhotte (sp?), and she got
her start in
acting doing stunt work for "Hook".

College Bound?
Where will Shannon Miller attend college after
1996? I know she's not NCAA
eligible, but was just wondering if anyone knew where she
was headed. I had
heard she liked Stanford, but I don't know if she was
accepted or not.

Shannon College-bound
I don't know if she is college-bound, I am
pretty certain she is. Her father
is supposed to
be a physics teacher(college). Since she won a National High
Athletic and
Academic Achievement Award, I assume she is smart and could do
well in a place like Stanford. IMO, the NCAA is foolish not
to let someone of
her caliber compete. Imagine
what attendance at College gymnastic meets would
be
like, that is if Miller wanted to continue her career. BLM Or
could continue
without all of the Rule nonsense
regarding professionalism.

Of course, anyone who has seen
"Spitfire" starring Kristie Phillips can
forget
that great bar dismount.
When looking at the TV Guide schedules for
Nationals, it said that the EF
will be on Saturday
and the AA will be on Sunday. I'm
pretty sure they
should be switched around. Does anyone know?
