Re: American Classic
Isn't American Classic the qualifier for Worlds? If so, won't
everyone
who wants to go to worlds in Puerto Rico have to compete?

Am. Classic/ Worlds
I wonder if many of our more experienced gymnasts
will sit out the
American Classic (and thus the chance to go to the worlds)
so as not to
wear themselves out and put their
reputations on the line. I
almost
think it would be better for the world team
to include less experienced
athletes, so that the
Atlanta team contains noone new to big
international competition. I wonder if this will be the case for
the
Americans, and people from other countries. If Miller, Dawes, Strug,
or
anyone else decides this, it might be a good idea
for Zmeskal to try to
compete
and make the top 5 at the American Classic, and go to Worlds.
This might
help her Olympic comeback by letting the international (and
the US) judges know that she is for real. I don't know, maybe my
speculations are a little to far away from reality-anyone
have any other
opinions?

Re: Am. Classic/ Worlds
I can only imagine if she did compete and say
she won, imagine the cover of
IG reporting the meet: SUPER KIM IS
BACK!
I think she might need to compete to just get re-used to
compulsories and
optionals
again. Since compulsories will be weighted at trials (60&, I
believe), it would be in her bets interest to try them out
against the judges
in a meet which isn't 'THE BIG
ONE'.
I have wondered about something, is the
American Classic and US Classic ONLY
open to US
gymnasts? Couldn't someone like Bogi compete in this
meet just
to get the compulsories under her belt
again? I know she competed in
Sabae, but WOULD
she be allowed to compete in these meets or are they US
only?
It is in an interesting question since gymnasts from Canada and other
countries might want to compete in a C/O meet to get re-used
to doing them.
After all, how many big meets (save nationals) are there
which use C/O?

Bogi competed compulsories
at the 1995 American Classic when she was
training
with Bela.
Also, don't many gymnasts who train in the US but
compete
for other countries (diaz, Apusukh)
sometimes compete in these
meets? I'm clueless as to the actual rule,
however.

lefties
Dear Gymners,
This is a
topic that has always baffled me, and it just occured
to me to
bring it up on gymn. I have odne
informal resurch, and I have come to the
conclusion that 95% of all l the top elite gymnasts are left
handed. Why is
that. It seems
to me that in the world it is rare to find lefties, but in
the gymnastics world it is rare to find righties.

Re: American Classic/Worlds
According to the USAG selection procedures
the 4 "open" spots for Puerto Rico
(Moceanu,
as an individual medalist in '95, is automatically invited to be on
the team) *will*
be determined at the American Classic by optional scores
only,
but this doesn't *disallow* the federation to accept petitions and
"special circumstances" cases at a later date.
So
if your favorite gymnast doesn't show up in Tulsa don't *automatically*
count her out of the '96 Worlds.
BTW, the American
*men's* team will be picked (sort-of) at the Winter Cup. I
say "sort-of" because the 6 highest optional
gymnasts and each of the event
winners (if they
differ) will be "considered" by the men's program commitee
to comepte in PR.

I thought only 4 per country were going
to these worlds. Back in
Paris,
5 men and women per country competed, but they decided later, due
to number of events, that in the future it would be 6 men
and 4 women at
an individual event worlds (that's
why 6 men per and 4 women per country
competed
apparatus prelims in Brisbane). Unless this rule has changed again?

Newbie needs help
Hi all,
I'm sorry if this is the wrong
place to ask my novice questions, but I
truly
couldn't find any other appropriate place.
I was wondering if I could
get some help in learning how to do forward
and
backward walkovers. I've read books
that show you how with pictures,
but they never
tell you how limber or strong you have to be to perform
each
step.
For example, to do a backward walkover, they tell you to bend
over backwards.
Then they say to shift your weight until it is over your
shoulders and then
simultaneously kick one leg in
the air. Am I wrong in assuming
that one
needs extremely strong arms and a very
flexible back and an ability to do
an oversplit?
I would like to know how to practice to
be finally able to do them.
Maybe
an idea of strengthening and
flexibility exercises, time involved, method,
something
to that effect. Any pointers would
be much appreciated.
thank you,
Sharon

Re: Moceanu's hop
I
think that the hop at the end of Dom's routine shows that she
still has some energy and power at the end of her routine
and it is very
unique. Not a lot of gymnasts have the endurance
to do that if they tried
(at the end of a routine
like hers). Also, if you look at
the compulsory
floor routine, the last line has a
rebound jump at the end too. The
only
difference is Dom is tumbling forwards as
opposed to going backwards (she
has complete
control) and the compulsory floor has a hop down to the floor
instead of to the feet.
Why should Dom be deducted when it is not a
deduction
in the compulsories?
Just my opinion.
Vicki.

Kerri Strug
I've noticed there has been much
talk about Kerri's return to Bela's gym.
Everyone
seems to wonder why she moved since she was doing so well with the
Colorado
Aerials. Well, there was a pretty big article in the Houston
Chronicle last Sunday that talked about Kerri's return. She
basically
said that after the Olympics she decided
to turn to a more lax training
style and enjoyed
it at first. Soon though she missed the level of
training
that she had with Bela. She said that nobody, not
even
Nunno, trains like Karolyi
and admitted she never felt fully prepared for
her
competitions. It also compares her confidence level and maturity
now with how it was in '92. She seems to be happy now that
she's back in
Houston. I saw Kerri (along with Kim, Dom & Bela) at a mini-exhibition
December 30, '95 and she
smiled more than I've ever seen. Karolyi says
he's expecting all three of his girls to be in Atlanta on
possibly
the most successful US team ever. He's
also thrilled about the Games
being in the USA. If
anyone is interested in a copy of the original
article
about Kerri, just let me know!
