Thanks to Rachele and Sherwin for the results!

I was impressed to see that the three US AA competitors placed relatively
high. The only team to have all three place in the top tweleve! That
shows a lot of depth.

Does anyone know if injuries have been a factor on other nations' teams?

Subject: WOMEN'S AA: WORLDS

I just had to say that I for one am so happy for Lillia and the sport
of gymnastics. For all her time in this sport she seems to never have been
able to pull it together in an AA competition and seems to be shut out
even though she has the talent and ability to win it all. Her success, and
that of Khorkina finishing second, firmly illustrates that women's gymnastics
is in a new age. Pure athleticism may have own titles in the past, but judges
appear to be looking at the whole package and counting artistry. I am glad
for that!

I have meantioned before the "pre-Olympics World's curse". I hope that for
my santity, it does not come true for Lillia.


And last, Shannon. I was a big fan of Shannon from 1991-1993. I wanted to
see her do well and 12th AA is certainly no disgrace considering the physical
problems adding to the already overwhelming pressure of being a 2 time world
AA champ. I think that her performance, as told by Sherwin and others,
will not only motive other gymnasts but should serve as an example to all
future Olympians of this world. She may have come to Sabae with dreams of
gold, but her gutsy performances in team competition made her a world champ
in my book. She will probably go down in gymn history as one of the bets
gymnasts of all time. She deserves it. After reading about the AP statements
and her unselfish performances in team when she was injured, I am reminded
of that great moment in 1979 when Nadia put aside her injuries for the
good of the team. I dare anyone in the media to ever claim that Ms. Miller
is a selfish person. All the best to her in EF and future meets down the
road to Atlanta.

P.S. Look for those who didn't get AA medals (Gogean, Mo, Miller, Moceanu,
and Amanar) to clean up at event finals. But, I hope Lillia wins floor!

Congratulations to Lilia Podkopayeva upon her winning the gold in the
all-around. Also, congratulation to the USA women's team coming in third,
especially since 4 of the seven members hadn't been to Worlds before. Go

Oh, sounds like a wonderful meet! My Energizer bunny award is a
three-way tie for Ovary, Boginskaya, and Kosuge. Can _anyone_ believe
Kosuge's still competing? whoa...
Wonder why Hatagean only got to compete floor? Hmmmm...
I'm thrilled with the performances of Moceanu and Strug. Both of
them were in their first World AA finals, and both did wonderful jobs! As
for Shannon, I think she showed the guts of a true champion by continuing
through her injury in team finals and also competing AA finals. I was
reminded how Kim Zmeskal, disheartened and injured, led all scores in
team finals in the '92 Olympics.
I congratulate the Pod, Khorkina and Milo on their AA medals.
Three of the coolest, classiest, most innovative gymnasts on the planet
got to stand on the podium, where all of them rightfully belong.
And a special thanks to Sherwin and Rachele, for their hard work
posting all of those results... :) your running commentary rocked, Sherwin!

My jaw dropped when I saw Ovary's name! I know Kosuge's been around
forever and a day, but I don't really remember when she first competed
at Worlds. Was she at Rotterdam?

How many athletes (M & W) who competed here were at Rotterdam? (There
aren't any from Montreal, right? Or are there?) Besides Ovary,
Boginskaya (& Kosuge?), there's Alan Nolet, Yuri Chechi (I think?),
Andreas Wecker (geez, I'm forgetting who was at Rotterdam -- was he?), and
did I see Kalofer Hristosov's name in the results somewhere?

Thank you Sherwin, for the wonderful (and prompt!) coverage of the women.
Well, I was little down about the Americans, with the injuries, but
Podkapayeva just made my day, week, month, year....I could go on forever!
I've always thought she was the most stylish gymnast around BY FAR, and her
toe-point was the most beautiful I've ever seen from any gymnast, but after
not seeing her anywhere big doing well for so long, I worried. But now,
she's finally getting the long-overdue credit. Hats off to Khorkina too, and
Milo, an old favorite - sorry it's not gold, but at least she's got a medal.
I think the Romanians hired a new dance coach - if not, some miracle
happened, because I never knew that Gogean could dance at all, but from what
I saw today of her floor (on t.v.) was very impressive......could I even say
elegant? Also, I loved Mo's double layout on floor.....she's finally got the
tumbling to match the rest of her events, but I think she's getting a little
old for the typewriter music! Still, the Americans, did ok, all considered,
and I think the world can really learn something from Strug's double layout
(perfect!), and Miller's tenacity - poor Moceanu - she looked so nervous! No
smiles today after events, like she did at nationals! Anyway, congrats to
all, and thanks to everyone who has put out stats so quickly.

p.s. a women's Greek Olympic team? this is certainly something that will be
VERY interesting to watch!

What I'm going to say is probably going to ruffle some people hair, but I
think it has to be said. I am not going to complain about the US women's
scores, because in comparison to the rest of the teams, they were pretty
much in line, but I am going to complain about the Romanian scores. No
offense, but i don't believe the right team was on top of the podium. China
threw the most difficult sets, and the most elegant. How can you explain
giving Gogean a 9.875 for her bars set, and Mo only earning a 9.862? I know
that Mo had two small faults, but the routine had SOOO much more in terms
of amplitude. And, like I said I won't complain about the American scores,
some of theres show some unrewarded moves, also. The Romanians threw
nothing really spectacular, and yet they won. The Americans did much the
same, still had approximtely the same difficulty level ,a dn yet went
unrewarded. AND! China threw the gretest routines of the night, and
finished second. *sigh* Haven't we learned anything?

Two more quick points, then I'll shut up. Why wasn't Miller's ankle
wrapped, and her front full on floor was absolutely huge. The first front
full I've seen that actually appeared to open in mid-air.

I don't want to start the discussion of THE BOOK again, but today
on 60 Minutes they had a story about how bad Karolyi treats his
gymnasts. He declined to comment (I think they tried to talk to him
after Nationals), but they did interviews with Kristy Phillips and I
think Jackson as well as Tom and Lori Forster. It portrayed the sport
very badly. The Forster's stuck up for the sport, and Kristy said that
she didn't think she would have been as good without Bela.

So. The Pod finally did it. I don't know about anyone else, but I am on
Cloud 9 right now, and I'm still waiting to come down <VBG>. Sherwin,
thanks for the play-by-play, it was the next best thing to being there.
Never have I been so pleased about the outcome of an AA. I have every
confidence that she will do well in the EF, as well. I'm sorry to see
Shannon finish so low, but this is not a big setback by any means, just bad
luck. My respect for her has increased with every passing year, and her
unselfish performance in the team competition made me prouder than if she had
won yet another World AA title.

Congradulations also to Li Xiaoshuang, who should also rack up in finals on
floor and vault---this man can twist like no other. Those double twisting
double layouts...wow. China is looking very, very good right now, with two
major golds and a silver, with more medals to follow, no doubt. I agree with
Jennifer, the Chinese women were the standouts in the team competition. I
always knew if they could learn to tumble and vault, they'd be dangerous.
Look for a 10.00 for Mo if she hits.

I'm usually one who grumbles about TV coverage, but I was satisfied with
ABC's broadcast this time around. Glad to see someone had the sense to push
back the AA until next week (I'm assuming that finals will be broadcast the
weekend after that), 90 minutes of coverage simply would not have been
enough. The fluff was interesting (no Bela/Steve interviews), and some new
or rarely seen faces were shown. I never expect much from the networks, so
this was a pleasant surprise.

Oh, I can't wait until next Sunday, I can't imagine the Pod in tears. I may
need some tissue myself...

I caught this in IG from OCtober, but I didn't believe it. Now
I guess, since I've heard it from a second source (the announcers
today). Why is the Tsuk-half (half on, half off layout front) named
the Phelps? No offense to Jaycie, whose gymnastics I love, but
didn't Shannon Miller introduce it at the 1994 worlds, BEFORE Jaycie
did? *boggles* I'm a little confused. Also, real quick, did Fontaine
ever get the bars dismount named after her, and is she still competing?

As for this comment, I was surprised as well. You know, it is just a
half on, half off front somi. I don't know (could be getting myself in trouble
here!) if the body position of the salto matters, since a "Yurchenko" or
a "Tsuk" is a Tsuk regardless of body position. But, more than a decade ago,
Little Melita Ruhn of Romania did a half-on-half off in Moscow '80 for a
perfect ten. And it was tucked. She did the same vault in Fort Worth, too.


I was a little surprised about one thing about the coverage, they did not show
anything of Bogi. I thought that Kathy was just "itching" to compare Bogi
to Khorkina on FX. I was waiting for it!


I actually thought the "fluff" was okay, too. I liked seeing the Soviet
camp, since I hadn't heard anything about it. I've seen enough of Deva and
Nadia flashbacks to last a lifetime.

BTW: Anyone have any comments about the success or lack of success of the
new 7-6-5 rule? Do you think that it effected the outcome? I don't. The
outcome was most effected by the depleted US team.
