I have to agree with Alex Faber...

Those who have predicted that American gymnasts will go to Atlanta and sweep
the gold medals either grossly underestimated the potential and resources of
international gymnasts or are simply putting wishful thinking into official
predictions.

I do not mean to underestimate the power of the homeland advantage, but I
myself would never want to win an Olympic medal on that basis rather than on
on the basis of my athletic abilities. It only takes one look at the Sabae
World's champ to realize that the All-Around gold medal will not necessarily
go to an American...

The Cincinnati Enquirer had a very short blurd in the sports section
stating that USA Gymnastics would be nominating Indianapolis as a site
for the 1999 World Championships.  Anyone else hear anything on this?

Heading into the Olympics, USA no longer is a "middle-pack" team and is
an honest gymnastics power (in Women's). I feel that some may bicker over
the fact that they could be overscored due to the homecourt advantage,
but they also carry the incredible pressure of being expected to produce
medalist, champions, and a team medal. They've proven their success on MANY
INTERNATIONAL SITES and have produced medalists in the last 6 WORLDS. I don't
think that I would want to have to deal with that kind of pressure.

Perhaps you are right and the US may be overscored, but you know I rarely see
people bicker over the fact that many gymnasts in the top 4 teams execute
routines of less quality than some of the gymnasts of the "middle-pack"
teams and consistently get higher scores because they are in the last
rotation.

I don't think that it will be that "biased" towards the USA. I worry more about
it being biased towards a gymnast who lacks artistic talent and just throws
the mega difficult tricks with form errors everywhere but not a deduction
made. I've seen it before in 1992.

I'm sorry to put a personal note on the DG, but I've been having some
problems with bounced mail.  If Donald Yarros sees this, please e-mail me
directly.  I was trying to answer your questions about Scott Keswick, but
everything I send to you bounces.

Jeff brings up a good point. Normally, I wouldn't add this, but I
think it would be a good example to back up his point. At Sabae,
the French woman's team was doing some VERY loud complaining about
compulsories, especially during the uneven bars compulsories.

On, the other hand, look what Bulgaria was able to accomplish in the
middle session of optionals in Seoul.

I don't know where you are getting your information, but I was in Sabae and
followed the French team and heard NOTHING about them complaining about
anything (certainly not "very loud").

The only public team complainent concerning compulsory scores, that I'm aware
of, were the Chinese men.

What is a 2 1/2 twist dismount off beam (like Teza from france performs)
worth? D or E ?

It's a D, same as a double back.

Since there seems to be some doubt on the source on this, I'll explain.
I just assumed it was common knowledge.

Local newspaper, during the Sabae worlds, ran a story on the French coach
complaining about the uneven bars score of either Elvira Teza or Latetia
Begue (please pardon any spelling mistakes there), and about the scoring
for the French in general. *shrug* So sue me, I believed it.

That is another flaw in the code that I was not aware of.  Doesn't a 2 1/2
twist repuire much more talent, skill, and air awareness than a simple double
tuck?

        Well, I'm not a gymnast myself, but I think that a 2 1/2 twist
really isn't that much harder than a double, and if you made a 2 1/2 an
E, then those who can do triple fulls off beam wouldn't get extra credit.

This past Saturday evening I was watching Road to U.S. Olympic Gold at
7:30 EST.  Mary Lou was helping to host the show, and she said that next
week the entire show (1/2 hr.) would be devoted to gymnastics.  They are
going to interview Dom. M. and many others.  They also announced that
Steve Nunno was recently married, and his new years goal was, " to do
something I have never done before, be a good husband."  I hope this is
not old info.

Obviously, the fact that you are not a gymnast is very prevalent in your last
statement.  I was a gymnast.  Any skill which has to land foward is much
harder than a skill that you can see the ground before you land.  Out of
curiosity, I would like to know the value of those skills on floor.  I
bwelieve that a double back is  a B, while a 2 1/2 is a D.  Am I correct?
Those ratings seem much more fair.

Hello fellow gymners, I am back.  I kept "in touch" with gymnastics while
I was away from here.  Thanks to Gordon Estes, I got to watch quite a few
gymnastics competitions from this past year and the '92 Olympics.  Also,
I helped out my high school's gymnastics team in practice and a couple of
competitions.  I am going to keep this short for now.  If anyone is
intersted in discussing some high school gymnastics in Indiana, let me
know.  As soon as I can, I will start discussing my feelings of some of
the competitions that I was finally able to see.
Gymnastically Yours,
Aaron

Dear gymners,

Does anyone know what happened to Elodie Lussac?  I first saw her at
the 1994 Amercian Cup.  She was graceful and threw alot of diffuclty.  Then,
I had heard that she had broken her zygomatic process (cheek bone) in a
crash on one of the events.  What actually happened?  Did she return to
competition?

Gymnastically yours,

David
