Re: Houston Chronicle Interactive
Has anyone been having trouble
accessing this web site? Every time
I want to
view a document it asks me for a paasword and user ID.
If anyone can explain
this problem, I would
appreciate it. Thanks.

Gymnastics
To All:
You know, I've been
reading back and forth about the lackadaisacal
attitude IG takes toward U.S. collegiate gymnastics, and a
thought occured to
me.
If you look at the top
20 women's teams and figure they have 5 home
meets
each, and then you look at the average attendance of each home meet --
then your total number of spectators equals:
---------- 485,000!!!!!
-----------
That's more people than the attendance of 45 American Cups. That's
more
people than USA Gymnastics generates in an
entire year in major elite
competitions. And I'm
not even including attendance at the 30 other women's
programs
or at the men's meets. Add all those up, and the number of total
spectators goes over 600,000 or even higher.
And, yet, IG and
the other major magazines sit back and say, "Naaaaa,
we don't want to cover collegiate gymnastics."
Geez, if they
really wanted to help increase their circulation, they'd
start
giving real coverage to collegiate gymnastics and then have
"sponsors"
set up booths at collegiate
meets to sell subscriptions (from which they make
a
commission).
But, no, I guess more than a half-million spectators isn't worth
it.

NBC
did try something along the lines of showing two routines at
once during the 1988 Olympics, IIRC...they had two teeny
windows showing
what was happening simultaneously
on two different events. I can't remember
if that was distracting or not...

regarding IG complaint
Jennifer, why don't you just submit an article
anyway? What have you got to
lose? Even if
you don't get paid or your article in the magazine at least
you get the experience.
BTW, I think IG has a
balanced coverage of NCAA events.
Within the last
year, they had a two page
article on one of the college gym clubs.
I can't
remember which one, but Joanna
Davis was one of the gymnasts on the team.
And you really can't complain about
their coverage of the nationals,
especially when
compared to the crappy coverage devoted to the 95 Worlds
(see my previous whinge).
But
I certainly agree with the person who commented on the find-a-words. I
would
like to see less of these in favour of more info,
pictures.
I'm getting to the stage where I buy IG only for the
pictures, because I
certainly get more information
and critical comment on this forum.
Simone.
