4.  Whatever the coaches do...I hope they decide NOT to use Chow on floor.
She
should definitely vault and work bars, and perhaps beam, but that floor
routine
is most surely the worst of the seven.  Great tumbling, I'll give her that,
but
her dance is among the weakest on the national team (along with Teft.)
What a trooper, though, to remount and finish that beam routine after taking
such a horrible spill!

Chow tied for third on floor and Teft was fifth.  Just reminding you.

I remember a while back it was posted here that Karolyi's gym was sold to
another gym.  Does anyone recall (if it was even posted) how much that gym
sold for?

Just curious, how much is a top club worth on the markey anyway?

Subject: intro & variety of topics

My name is Dani and I've been lurking about here for a couple
months, but I thought I'd finally speak today.  I have no gymnastics
training whatsoever, and my only involvement with the sport is as a
fan, but I LOVE to watch gymnastics.  For years, my favorite gymnast
has been Dominique Dawes.  About two years ago, I adopted a 13 year old
girl.  The first weekend she was home, there was an ad on TV for a
gymnastics competition, and my new daughter said, "oh, I love
gymnastics!"  Then Dom D. was shown on the ad, and Tammy (my daughter)
said "and she's my favorite!"  I thought, hmm... maybe this is going to
work out!  It has, and my daughter and I will be attending some of the
competition in Atlanta.  We'll be at both podium training sessions and
the women's compulsories (both sessions).  We weren't going to go at
first, but in '92 I had the triplecast, and I know what kind of
coverage to expect from NBC, so I decided we'd go and watch the stuff
that certainly wouldn't get TV coverage.

Speaking of TV coverage, I for one would like to see events being
covered by only two people:  one male and one female former gymnast.
What do the non-gymn guys really add to things?  I actually find John
Tesh's comments to be somewhat more intelligent than some of the other
(non-gymn)commentators, but I can't recall ever learning anything from
him.

I don't follow women's gymnastics as much as men's (first of all, it's
not covered as well, as we know, but I also only really like V and HB
in men's), but the trials were certainly edge of your seat viewing.  I
felt so bad for Scott Keswick after all of his hard work rehabbing.  As
for the women, I think the right team was chosen and the depth is
tremendous.  Compare Amanda Borden now to Wendy Bruce from '92.  I just
hope our injured athletes heal.  I also hope that if they aren't really
healed, they bow out.  I get the sense that that's going to happen.

I hesitate to even bring this up, but what the heck.  My two cents on
the petitioning, etc. is this:  This year is much better than '92.  The
process actually relied on scores (rather than a closed door coaches
meeting) and was clearly laid out ahead of time.  I don't think the
coaches meeting was the way to go in '92, but I think we got the best
team out of it.  If you look at the tapes, Amanda Borden wasn't ready
in '92.  Kim Kelly and Wendy Bruce were probably at about the same
level, so I guess it could have gone either way.  I have repeatedly
heard (though I don't think from Kim herself) that Kelly "made the US
Olympic Team" in '92, but didn't get to go.  That just isn't accurate.
She made the training squad, but everybody knew (or should have known--
I, an uninformed fan, knew) that the team wasn't actually chosen at
that time.

Sorry that was so long.  I guess I shouldn't save my comments for all
at once...

Subject: Dominique Dawes

I was VERY upset at how the comentators reacted to Dominique winning trials.
Instead of saying "It's great that Dom is back in old form right before the
Olympics so that she can help our team.  We congratulate her for winning the
trials."  They said, and I quote "It would have been great if Kerri would
have won whe could go away from here saying that she won the olympic trials."
Well, you know I really like Kerri but I give kudos to Dom for winning the
competition.
I was absolutely appalled at the way that my new team-WESH Channel 2
(NBC)-comented on trials the next morning.  Can you believe that instead of
showing Dominique who won the meet they showed Andree` Pickens on accident.
I have no problem with Andree` but let's get it straight.  Then my
newspaper-The Orlando Sentinal-showed Kerri Strug with a caption about
Shannon Miller underneath.  What's the deal here.  Why can't anyone figure
out which gymnast is which?!
AND ONE LAST THING!  Instead of showing the people who actually competed
at trials and fought to make the team-Amanda Border- the Today show featured
a 10 minute segment talking with Dominique Moceanu.  Her second interview
with the Today show this week!!!!  If I were her and Shannon I would feel a
bit embarrassed, kind of.  Because everyone else had to take the pressure of
trials except them.  I mean, I know that they have injuries and all, but they
aren't any one special.  Or are they?
Also I am PRETTY sick of Bela.  He isn't that great you know.  He has
NEVER, that's right NEVER trained a gymnast before the Elite level.  So you
know all he does is put the gymnasts through the skills and refines them.
It's getting the and teaching the skills that's  the hard part you know.

With the 7-6-5 rule, what's the chance of D.M. or Shannon not
competing on some events? I.e. the events where they would be
(literally) weakest? Would their coaches agree to that?

Subject: Flash photography at gym meets

Hello to all,

I have to bring up the subject of flash photography at gymn meets after
attending the US Olympic Trials this past weekend. If you saw the trials on
television you did not notice this, but if you were at the trials you did -
people using flashes to take pictures of the gymnasts performing.

Repeatedly the stadium announcer asked that people not use flash cameras at the
meet and repeatedly people just ignored it.  At one point I even saw Kip Simons
telling two young ladies in the audience to quit using the flash on their
cameras!

Although I am sure most people on this list know better, I will give the two
main reasons NOT to use flash photography at a gymnastics competition:

1. It is distracting to the competitors.

2. FLASH PHOTOGRAPHY DOESN'T WORK IN AN AUDITORIUM! The flash attachment on most
cameras only illuminates a subject about eight feet away at the most. Even if
you are sitting in the front row of the Fleet Center (or any other
stadium/auditorium), the flash does no good at all to illuminate the gymnasts.

So, please listen to the announcers when they say not to use a flash.

Is the process to qualify for the all-around still the same for Atlanta,
meaning that a maximum of three gymnasts are allowed per country? I would
have a seriously hard time imagining that Moceanu could even qualify if
Miller, Dawes and Phelps hit. Now what will the hounds of the media do
should that happen?

Subject: Re: John Tesh & Olympic Trials

There is one competition we have on tape (maybe the 94 worlds?) where
Gina Gogean took a similar hit, only on the back of her head and just
got back on to finish the routine.  Similar situation.  I think almost
any gymnast would do the same in that situation.  I have never seen
a gymnast take a fall and not get back on to finish the routine, unless
of course a really serious injury was sustained.

One time in one of our meets, a girl did a double layout, landed on her back,
walked off floor and just never came back.  We saw her on bars later though,
so it must not have been to bad.

Subject: Re: Dom. Moceanu on the Today program + Oprah

It is the day after Olympic Trials for women are over and the NBC Today
program
features an interview with what athlete???? Who could it be???

Of course it is the media's sweetheart, Dominque Moceanu. And, it would be nice
if they (The Today Show) could just squeeze in a little
mention that the US is sending a men's team to Atlanta as well.

Well, I got up at seven in the morning to watch this too.  After an hour and
1/2 it came off.  Unfortunately our TV guide said the interview was to be with
Dominique Dawes, so I was quite disapointed.

I must congratulate Oprah.  Today's show was actually pretty good.  Out of
the at least 6 or 7 people they had on 3 were gymnasts.  She interviewed Nadia
and Bart on their lives together ( Do you get up from the dinner table and do
flips?!)  and they did a nice routine together.  They also talked with Mary
Lou Retton from her house.  (She had her little girl with her.)  SHe said some
very nice things and there was even a few brief clips of Dom M, Dom D,
Shannon, Kerri, and more.

Now that we know Dom's stress fracture is really about 1.5 inches instead of
8 ft, she might be ready by the  games. If not, I don't know what to say. I
am hoping Shannon will be 100% If she would rest (Dom, too), she should be
able to get to the games in good shape.

The only thing that I am worried about is that if Dom and Shannon have to take
time off to recover then they can't be working on routines.  We should put
people who are healthy so, even if they don't have the highest scores right
now, they can be working at getting them better.  If Dom and Shannon take say
a week or two more to rest and then train really hard to get ready, they will
reaggravate or possibly to more damage to their bodies from their injuries.

As for team unity, I saw Jaycie and amamnda and kerri talking.  And kerri
trains and has trained with dom, and shannon, so I think alot of the
unity will depend on her.  The commentators were actually right when they
said that kerri is an important team leader.
