I disagree
that there is absolutely no reason for height and weight of
gymnasts to be shown. If this were true, why would they show
them? TV
stations don't do this just to cause
anxiety in young athletes. They display
this
information because people want to know it. And people want to know it
because it does make a difference in how an athlete looks when
they perform
a skill, as well as other
factors.
It think it's awful that people have
eating disorders and of course people
in a sport
like gymnastics should work to prevent them. But we all live in
reality. The fact is that being short and light usually DOES
help a gymnast
perform most skills easier. It's just physics. That's why most gymnasts are
short and light. It doesn't mean that taller and heavier
gymnasts shouldn't
be welcome at all levels, but
should we all pretend that it makes no difference?
This argument goes
on all the time about models. Some say it's unfair that
all
these skinny models are in magazines because it makes girls feel that
they have to look like that. But there will always be skinny
girls around.
So what is the solution? I don't think it makes sense to hide
how much
people weigh or how tall they are to
relieve pressure on those who are
striving to be
gymnasts. What makes sense to me is that coaches and parents
and commentators should stress that there are many types of
bodies that all
have their strengths and
weaknesses and that the sport is for everybody.
I like to know the
heights of gymnasts because it helps me understand the
way
they look when they perform. This is especially true for male gymnasts,
since I am male and do gymnastics. Sure I wish I were as
strong as Yuri
Chechi, but it's okay that I'm
not. Nor am I as short as Richard Grace, but
I like knowing how short he
is. If you think males don't have pressure to be
stronger
just like girls have pressure to be thin, then I disagree.
Just my
opinion,
Orion

USA Nat'ls Men's AA Press Conference
Men's
All-Around Press Conference
1995 USA Gymnastics Championships
(The
conference was somewhat longer than the transcript below but I
cut out all of the boring stock questions like "so did
you follow the
scores during the meet?")
Lynch:
"I had to take a risk. There
were two very big elements in
that [parallel bars]
routine. The dismount [double front
1/2 out] was
a very difficult E dismount. It's
probably the only dismount done in
the world. It
was a risk but we had to do it because it's going to pay
off
down the line."
Q: (to John Roethlisberger) You seemed really
happy when you finished
the high bar...?
Roethlisberger:
"Yeah, I was actually real nervous going into high
bar.
I was having trouble with my mount sequence and actually a couple
days before I left it was all over the place. I was real
nervous about
that so getting high bar out of the
way was a big hurdle."
Q: Was it easier or less stressful because
some of the top guys are
injured?
Roethlisberger:
"I felt plenty of pressure. I
have a lot of respect
for the guys that I competed
against over the last couple of days and
I know that they're tremendous
gymnasts and athletes. You can never
take any of
them for granted. You could have this meet next weekend
and
have a totally different finish."
Q: What does it mean to you to
be a 4-time champion?
Roethlisberger: "It's great [he laughs]...
that's probably the quote
you're looking for. I
just feel really fortunate; I feel really
lucky.
In a sport like gymnastics you work your butt off, but it
always comes down to a little bit of luck that everyone
needs to
finish on top and I think I've been
fortunate enough to have that. I
have an
unbelievable training situation. It's a thrilling feeling.
I'm just waiting
for people to start asking me about five and
stressing
me out about that one [he laughs]..."
Q: So John, have you
thought about five?
[everyone laughs]
Roethlisberger:
[he smiles] "No, I'm sure some of you guys are gonna
start thinking about it."
Q: John, you're
always characterized as "steady." Is that kind of
like
damning with faint praise; does that bother you at all...? Do you
wish you were known as the best of this or the best...
Roethlisberger: Not at all. In 1990 I won my first
National
Championship and I remember very vividly Tim Daggett saying in
the
commentary 'you know, he's not real flashy or
exciting but he's
consistent.' It perturbed me a
little bit, but you know what? Every
meet, it's
the same thing. Hitting sets is THE most important
thing.
Number one. I don't care what anyone says. I don't care if it's
the Olympic Games, the World Championships, the
National
Championships, or your state meet: hitting sets is by far, BY FAR
the
most important thing. In my gym we train to
hit sets... if you don't
hit, you're not going to
win, you can count on that. I'm proud of the
fact
that people call me conservative but consistent-- that's fine
with me.
Q: Jair, what
injuries did you have last year to keep you out of
Championships?
Lynch:
For the past year, last year, week before USA Championships I
broke my left hand. Ten days before Winter Nationals in
January, I had
a small tear in the labrium (sp?), my left
shoulder.
Q: Back to John's consistency, and unspectacularness,
what do you
other guys think about it?
Bagiu: He's very consistent. He's very spectacular. That's just
a
bunch of bull, about not being spectacular. My
goal, like everyone
else up here, is to beat John.
He is the best gymnast in the country
right
now.
Q: John, would it surprise you that you didn't win any
apparatus
outright?
Roethlisberger: That
wouldn't surprise me. I guess that goes back to
being
consistent.

Hello I am a 15 year old level 8 eight gymnast. I think I am
5'2"
and weigh 113 pounds. But It has been
since at least January at my
last physical since I
have checked. I have never been
overly
concerned with my weight. How ever I do try to eat healty food and
stay away from
eating junk. I don't consider it a
diet for the
purpose of losing weight it is just
good nutrition. I eat when ever
I am hungry. I have never had any bad
experiences with coaches or
gymnastics saying that
I or any one I knew of needing to lose
weight or
else. I don't think most girls in gymnastics have eating
disorders
or are pressured by there coaches to lose weight, only a
small
few.

Hi,
I've been reading some books about this methods. Not weird at all.
In my opinion this
methods really work in sports. Those books says
that
if we visualize the best routine and then visualize ourself
doing
the best routine, (ok , it may sound weird)
soon the results will
appear in a way that we
can't explain. If we do this every day at
night
when we fall asleep and do this when we wake up sleepiness, this
methods are most effective. I don't know if it realy works but some
times I
ask: "and if it realy works?".
I'm still working in Acro
sports (mixed pairs) and sometimes I do
those
methods since last year. As a matter of fact last season I was
national champion in sports acrobatics (mixed pairs) and now
I'm in
the highest level in portugal.
When I can, even during my diary train,
I visualize the best routine and
then visualize me doing that.
If we have a worts
event and if we want to performed it, thats why
it
is the easiest to visualize.
Best regards from portugal

HELP ME PLEASEEEEE !!!!!!!!
Hi !
I'm pretty new to all this.
I have
been doing gym for a few years now, and at the moment I'm in the
process of doing my G.C.S.E 's. (you take thses exams when your about 15 or
16 years old over
here in the U.K)
For my summer coursework I have to promote a sport to
young people, and I
choose to do gymnastics as I'm
most familiar with the subject.
Please can somebody help me by giving
me some ideas on how to get young
people to
participate in Gymnastics.
Thanks !!

Re: Visualization,dreams
I
have always visualized my routines as well. I have never noticed
not
being able to visualized because of
what postition I was laying/sitting/
standing in though.
I think that most gymnasts do that though. When you
watch
meets on TV or even in a local gym, you can see many of the
gymnasts visualizing their routines right up until it's the
time for them
to compete. I think that one of the most obvious is
Trent Dimas who
would actually move his head in
circles as if his head were doing giants
on the
bar. I often do it just because I
am nervous before my routine
and it helps my
concentration. When I do it to help
me go to sleep, I
pretend I am at a big
international meet doing these amazing tricks that
nobody
has even thought about doing! :) ex. on floor: double twisting
double front layout without any form breaks or vault: Yurchenko
approach, half twist on, double front off with a half
twist!? of
course with a
stuck landing! hahaha! :)

Re: visualization, dreams
Thanks for everybody's input, but I think
everyone took it wrong what
I was saying. That's o.k. though,
it was probably the way I worded
it. I wasn't saying that visualization
itself was weird, but that the
laying on my side
trying to visualize the skill was.
I feel like I
am tilted and I can't swing
around the bar; giants, free-hips,
anything. I mean, I can, but it's just hard
because I feel like I am
looking sideways or
something. Anyway, try laying on
your side and
doing it and see what happens. It may just be me though. But does
anyone
ever have dreams where you do skills perfectly and all that?
I've never
done a triple twist, but in a dream once, I did, and it
really
felt real. I mean, it felt like it
really should in the air, as I would
imagine,
like where your head is and what you are actually seeing
while
you are twisting and flipping. I
remember when I was first
trying to do a backhandspring but couldn't and I had a dream about
doing it perfectly and at the next practice session, I had
no problem
doing it. Well, thought I would share that. Thanx
again.

For those people who live in Ohio around the Cincinnati area,
Mary Lou
Retton will be at Forrest Fair Mall
tomorrow and Sunday. If you are
interested and
need the times or other info. e-mail me sometime
because
I don't have the article with me at the moment. It was advertised
in
the Cincinnati Equirer
I think in the Weekend section. She will be
advertising
for Tyson Chicken. Last summer ('94) we went to see her and
it was great and at the end she signed autographs.
I was
thinking about getting her something, a gift. Does anyone have
any good ideas? I need to know by tomorrow afternoon if you
do. Well,
gotta go now.
Bye!
Margi :)
