Galieva competed for Russia at Subway, which was 1 week
before
AGI. She replaced Oxana Fabrichnova who was
injured.
>Also, why is she suddenly blaming Alex Alexandrov for pulling
>her
in the Olympics. In a back issue of
IG I have it sayz
>in
an interview that she 'was injured and could have competed'
>(that is not a direct quote). Why is she switching her

The blame isn't "sudden". The IG statement was propoganda.
IMHO,
I was glad to see the truth revealed -- it was truly bold.

Sorry, no predictions from me, though the idea of
China
winning both team titles is enchanting. :)

Re: Help with songs!
I've checked Dory's song clips*. I can definitely
tell you where to find the
NCAA song:
it's by a group called Exchange and it's on their "Into the
Night" album.
My CD is at the office so I can't tell you the exact song,
though it might be the title song. I've only seen them on
sale at HMV.
It's good driving music.
I've heard the AMY song
before. Nancy Kerrigan used it in a
program either
in the '92 or '94 Olympics that I
remember not liking very much (didn't like
her
moves, not the music). Ever thought
of asking the coaches where they
got the
music?
The FREnch radio tune, I've heard
before but can't place it. Could be
a
Tangerine Dream song? The DELE song sounds TD-ish too. Say,
is that
Elfi commentating in that piece?
And sorry, no idea on
the PEI tune -- didn't even remember that gymnastics was
at
the CanWinters in '91 %-).
* As a note, don't bother
trying to play these WAV files with Sound
Machine on a Mac - it comes out
all kshsshy & garbley. I had to
play
them on a PC with a sound card.
Say... any pianists/Tesh-freaks out there seen the John Tesh
music book yet?
Off-GYMN e-mail me, if you
have.

Grace

Actually, Roza's *first*
Int'l competition for Russia was the Bosphorus
Cup
in Istanbul, Turkey a few months before, where
she won the AA, V, & UB, plus
around $5000
US.
Her Russian citizenship was official shortly after the Sabae Worlds, as I
understand
it.

-I found a gnarly web site with song samples from
*thousands* of albums
(ie
- picture going into a listen-before-you-buy record store and being
able to listen to just about *everything* they have). I checked into your
suggestion as soon as I got your message and the song is
indeed called
"Into the Night" by the group Exchange. There is an album by the same
name and it also appears on the the
CD "Beyond Words". Thanks
Grace!
>Ever thought of asking the coaches where they got the

-I've asked coaches, gymnasts, choreographers, radio & TV stations,
music stores, etc.
and have had no luck. So putting the clips up
on the net was kind of a last resort. (And has worked well so far!)

That sure
is Elfi.
This song was also identified.
It's called
"Alpha" and can be found on the album
"Albedo 0.39" by Vangelis.
Apparently, a shorter version is on
the soundtrack to "Cosmos".
Two songs down, three to
go... Until I make more sound files
at least ;-)
Happy 1996 to all... and thanks again, Grace.

Re: Gymnastics Triva
Well, I don't know about the age thing, but I know for sure that
the answer with Mary Lou is definitely wrong. Nadia was in all four
event finals in 1976 (I have that on tape, so I saw it for
myself).
Also, didn't Latinina (sp) win the maximum number of medals possible in
each of her three Olympics (she won 18 in all, so I assume
she did)? In
that
case, she must have made all four event finals at three consecutive
Olympics.

Women's NCAA Video Tapes
I spoke with Meg Stephenson, U of MN
assistant coach and president of the
NCAA Women's Coaches Association the
other day. They are
considering
offering NCAA National tapes for sale
as a fundraiser. (The coaches
association pays someone to video tape the meet for
them.) If any of you
have comments about this--what's a reasonable cost, would
you be
interested, I'd be happy to get some
feedback to Meg. She said they
were
also looking at putting together a video on
recruiting and the process for
potential athletes
as there is much confusion out there.
