Subject: Kerri!!!

I totally agree with everyone's excitement about Kerri's win.  She's always
been one of my favorites.  She has won one other senior all-around title-the
1993 American Classic.  This was the world trials for that year.  Shannon did
not compete (she was previously qualified to the worlds), but Kerri won, and
Dominique Dawes was second.

I looked it up, and we're both wrong!  The 1990 Junior National Championships
were as follows:

1)  Hilary Grivich
2)  Larissa Fontaine
3)  Dominique Dawes
4)  Kerri Strug

I was thinking of the 1990 Junior American Classic, which is what Kerri won.

Subject: Nationals Qualifications

Looking at the list of National's qualifiers yesterday, it seems the only
possible ways to qualify to National's were World Team, American Classic, and
U.S. Classic.  Does this mean there is no way for Kim Zmeskal and Jennie
Thompson to compete next month?  If this is so, why would they not have shown
up for/not completed the U.S. Classic?  Seems pretty self-destructive to me.

First of all, YEAAAA KERRI! I've been on her side ever since
1992 when (in my opinion) she was jipped out of all-around finals.
She is a terrific gymnast. I'm really happy to see her do well, and to
see her bars work back up to par (was a little weak at world trials
the last time I saw it). She's a gutsy kid, and I'm eallu glad to
see her win this

1)Was watching the men's yesterday (will watch the women's today)
and,, like usual, the scopres were inflated for everyone. Seems to
be a common occurance at the Festival.

2) The men don't seem to be that weak. While a medal at worlds
(team) seems out of the question, I really don't see them having
too much trouble qualifiying

3)And this regarding nationals and qualifiers. Jennie (I think)
was injured. Mybe Kim was also? Both are recovering from pretty
serious injuries. KIm might have made the team, but personally
I don't think Jennie Thompsdon could keep up, judging from the
last time I saw her, which, granted, was last summer at nationals.

Hey Gymners,

The US.Olympic Festival has been pre-empted in Houston because
apparently our CBS affiliate has local obligations that they chose to
fulfill on this weekend.  (boo hiss) Could someone write up the TV
coverage of the meet for me and other Gymners who were not able to
watch it on TV (for example, for our ever-growing group of
international subscribers)?  Or better yet, if someone attended the
meet, I'd be interested in hearing any impressions.

Thanks to Billy for filling us in on the US Classic!

I'm going to have to write to CBS and the Olympic Festival and see how
they manage to do it.  An entire meet in 45 minutes with a break in the
middle to showcase the men. WOW!  ;)

Boy if we could do that in the Las Vegas Gymnastics Invitational we could
bring in even more gymnasts and get done in one day.

On a more serious note, I think Keri Strugg did an excellent job.  I
thought those Juniors did pretty good too, look out 1996 and 2000 olympics!

--Yee entered the festival competition just two months after
undergoing wrist surgery. "I needed this competition to prepare for
the nationals. These meets give us a lot of confidence."

--Grace [re men's gymnastics losing its luster since the U.S. team
last won the gold in '84]: "We're at an all-time low. There's nowhere
to go from here but up."

--Macready [re the same topic]: "Even when we do get TV coverage, it's
negative. The cameras like it when we miss. And the public likes the
girls. All they have to do is go out there and be cute. Everyone wants
to take them home. No one wants to take us home."

Subject: USOF Report

Well, here's my report on the USOF. Hopes this offers some insight.
I was really impressed by a lot of thing, you'll see what?

1st Rotation
Nice to see some of the gymnasts who WERE using Hristakieveas swtiching
to higher rated vaults now that it has been devalued. Brink's 1 1/2
twister was really powerful, if a bit overrotated.

I absolutely LOVED Strug's new floor routine. I love that particular music
(Hall of the Mountain King) I believe, and not only was the tumbling
good, but her dance was really shartp, except for the last 10 seconds, which
I will attribute to the altitude. It's probably the best routine I've ever
seen given her.

On the high difficulty note:
Jami Danzchters floor, Melinda Brambridges beam (with a smile, even)

2nd Roatation
HEHE. I rather like how CBS labeled it, the "MASH report". However, there
was nothing funny. Those injuries looked to be really painful. If I had
not known Kullikowski was ok, I woulda been really worried. She was
lucky to escape with what she did. Strug did almost the same thing
last year, and that was with a fraction of the power behind it. And
did Rowe finish? That fall looked painful. I also offer sympathies to
Kristy Powell, who looked really upset, which I can uderstand.

What was the deal with the 9.700 on Strug's vault? I know the vault
was devalued to 9.9, but the score was still low. It was a terrifc
vault, and deserved more.

Brink was overmarked on bars. Form breaks on her giants, and the transition
to low bar was labored, to saw the least.

I will go into more detail when I am done, but Atler really impressed
me, especially when she missed her first vault then nailed her second.

3rd Rotation
Alter double layout, Dantscher's double double off bars. TERRIFIC!

Strug's bars were very solid, and better than last year, but the
scroe was a little high. 1993 was better.

It would be really nice to see some better choregraphy by the juniors
on floor (ie Brion)

That new Bud Light commerical is really annoying :)

4th Rotation
Alter's beam was SOOOOO agressive. WOW. I was really impressed by the
maturity she showed, not just here, but everywhere.

Nice to see the 1/2 Yurchecnko's being done, being done to the fullest.

God, Strug looked nice on beam. Closest thing to perfect form I
have seen with her on beam in a very long time. the 9.65 was low.

I like Brink's floor music. What was it? I've heard it before (someone
from Alabama used it at nationalsd) and CBS used it during their broadcast.

*giggle* Kerri's voice still sounds sooooo young.

General Impressions

Overall, I was impressed by a lot of things. The Juniors appeared comfortable
and confident, and their level of difficulty was great. Also, form was much
better than skme SENIORS! I like difficuly, but form is good, too, and its nice
to see it not being neglected.

As for floor music, well, some people can do classical, some need modern. I
think the elite coaches need to lighten up and quit picking music for the
judges, and pick for their athletes.

I don't wanna sound TOO impressed, but Atler really awed me. She looked so
poised and confidenty, and the difficulty and form weren't bad, either.

As usual, I was not impressed by CBS' coverage. Like usual, they skimped.
I wish they would learn from their mistakes. AND COULD SOMEONE PLEASE
CLUE IN MCNAMARA ABOUT FRONT TUMBLING VALUES!!!! If I hear "not a real
difficult pass" one last time, I will puke. I know it isn't physically
as hard, but it is still a D element (rudi)

To tie it up, Strug was great, no question, she derseved this. She really
seems to be responding to her new coaches, and I think was underscored
on vault and beam. nationals should be QUITE interesting. Way to go
Kerri, you earned this.

Well, Kerri set a festival score high on UB 9.975.  Love the haircut.
Heather Brinks music-sounds very un-dynamo to me.  A lot of
cheerleaders/dance teams use that music.
VERY short program.  Felt a little cheated there, but maybe PRIME will show

Subject: Re: USOF Report

I agree that Strug was the best gymnast on the floor at the USOF (that I saw
via CBS), but I don't think that she was miss scored on vault or beam. On
Beam she was lucky. She lost balance on the oaktree and she had to fight,
and then she took a big step back on the dismount.  Vault- well perhaps she
may have scored higher ona second attempt, but 9.70 looked okay.

I was much more concerned with the gymnast who through the front full
on vault. Talk about form errors and twisting on the horse. Her legs were
bent and twisted and when she left the horse.

Brink was overscored on bars and floor. It is hard to believe that she
outscored Strug on floor considering Strug "dropped out" of her double
layout (Julianne) and Brink was bouncing all over the place on her
foward landings.

I have to admit, however, that the true stars of the meet were the juniors.
They clearly showed that the US does have alot of up and coming talent.

BTW: FAVORITE EXERCISE was the junior (Brion?) who on floor did:
Double layout, piked full-in, and closed with a whip to a triple full.
She may not have the best landings, and her dance was stock, but she's
got the potential. (Plus, its nice to see a front tumbling devoid FX
routine. (reminds me of the 80's

Someone asked earlier what an Oaktree is. I think they are playing off
a comment made about Milosovoci's Omelianchik's. It's a back handspring
1/4 to handstand.

And I think Mihini Bhardwaj is still at Brown's. It's just all the
athletes in the report were listed from their hometowns.

I still think, given a 9.9 start value, Strug's vault score coulda
been higher. And she fought that mistake on beam, covered it well.
Given the rest of the scores, I think a 9.700 or even a little higher woulda
been appropriate. Did she compete in finals?

Brink's floor score was fine, if a LITTLE high. Not that high that I would
really complain. Strug had the misfourtune of comepeting in the first
roation of floor, so...

Can someone please answer me a couple of real quick questions? Who
exactly is graudting off of Michigan'sd and alabama's teams? And what
ever happened to Shelly Engel and Molly Shawen? OH! And before I forget,
why wasn't Kim Kelly competing bars at nationals? Certainly, she could
have been expected to bring in a 9.800 or better; she had been all season.

A Colorado Aerial level 10 friend of mine told me about Tanya. She had broken

US Classic. In training before they were going to leave, she hurt her foot,
although I don't know exactly how, it must of been serious enough that she
couldn't compete.

As soon as I get more info on this, I'll post something, but untill now,
let's wish Tanya the best of luck in the future!!!!

PS, is there any way that she can compete in Championships??? Does anyone

Subject: Smiles from Kerri

After watching today's coverage of the Olympic Festival, I just
wanted to add to my previous post that I saw more genuine smiles from
Kerri Strug today than I have seen in all her past meets combined.
It seems like her new coaching situation is proving to be very
positive for her.  Good for her though, she deserves it!

Maybe this borders conspiracy theory, but I always wondered if her
coaches ever really gave her their complete support, seeing as Bela
was probably hedging his bets on Kim and Steve was undoubtedly doing
the same with Shannon.  Are there any coaches out there who can
respond to this question, how do coaches handle training two (or
more) potential competitors without favoritism?  Is it possible?

Thanks!

Hi all-
I just watched the all around, and I must also chime in that Kerri looked
so good..she seems so much more mature now as well as confident..
She was so consistent, I was really impressed..Especially bars, where she
had high difficulty and has learned to swing really smoothly.

I just read the post from Jennifer Eisenbart.  I really agree with your
comments.  I have never seen Vanessa Atler before and I was impressed..A
13 year old from California...

All Around:

1st Rotation:

Kerri Strug     9.800
Jamie Dantzsher 9.775
Heather Brink   9.775

2nd Rotation:

Heather Brink   19.55
Kerri Strug     19.50
Jamie Dantzsher 19.40
Vanessa Atler   19.40
Gail Kachura    19.275

3rd Rotation:

Kerri Strug     29.475
Vanessa Atler   29.200
Heather Brink   29.125
Gail Kachura    29.100
Jamie Dantzsher 29.000

4th Rotation - Final Results

Kerri Strug     39.125
Heather Brink   38.950
Vanessa Atler   38.750

East won the team competion.

Juniors were really impressive- especially Alexis Brion.  She had
difficult passes for a junior.

I have never seen Kerri smile so much.
It is nice to see.

After the competition, Kerri remarked:

"During the competition, I wasn't thinking about (the injury) much
because of adrenaline, so it really didn't hurt much."

Am I the only one that was disapointed on the coverage of the Olympic
Festival this year? They kept coming into the middle of people's
routines and Julianne McNamara talked A LOT during the floor routines.
I just wanted to hear the music and enjoy it. Also they only showed
about 4 routines per rotation considering it was taped and could have
shown a few more people. I know they had a lot to cover but in '93 they
had a nice long and good competition.

Does anyone know if and when they are planning on showing the apperatus
finals? Does anyone know the results?

Bye for now! See ya later.

I was disappointed with the coverage also..but what can you do.
I would have liked to see more coverage of gymnasts like Mina Kim,
Mohini, etc. but they as usual only show the top gymnasts...
I taped it thinking they might show more than they did, considering that
the tv guide said they'd be showing gymnastics (and nothing else).  Oh well.
Hopefully National's coverage will be longer.

Does anybody remember a Russian gymnast by the name of Sergey Khizhniakov who
competed around 1978-1980.
