Balance Beam & Pommel Horse
Hey gang,
I'm just finishing
up my balance beam/pommel horse trivia quiz, and could use
a few more questions, especially on pommel horse. Anything at all to do with
beam or horse!
Deadline is Wednesday at 5pm. Please send all questions via private
e-mail.
:-)

response to NCAA trivia
Adrienne suggested:
>3) this is a
forum to discuss things-do we really need to fill our boxes
with pointless trivia that only 2-3 people reply to
anyway!
For our newer subscribers, IMHO, the lack of interest has come
from our
recent topics.
I felt obligated,
due to the interest of some individuals, to include the
NCAA trivia
quizzes. Unfortunately, there seems
to be extremely minimal
interest among the overall
Gymn membership in these.
As we head back
into 'elite' gymnastics topics for trivia, I expect we'll see
the higher level of participation that we're used to. I'd also love to hear
suggestions for trivia topics.
One I've been
thinking of, since we'll soon be on Trivia Quiz #30 is 'Older
Competitors.' Any opinion?

Re: USA College Nationals
I
know there was a big story about TWU in the Dallas Morning News
today. One of their gymnasts, Becky Faulkner, won floor with
a 9.775.
Apparently the local ABC station did a piece on their program just
a few
weeks ago - how it's really taken off this
year.

You can thank my mother for these bits of information, as I
don't really follow college gymn
that much.

I dont
know if anyone saw the rock and roll iceskating
championship on Fox on
Sunday. Bela Karyoli was one of the
celebrity judges. When showing
highlights from the prelims, Scott Hamiton
yelled "Hey Bela" then he did his
back ariel on the ice. It was pretty funny. It was also the first time I've
seen him in a suit and tie.

Re: Summer Camps
Lake Owen is a great summer camp. I spent two summers
there as
a junior counselor when I was in high
school. There were
top level
coaches from all over the country
and great equipment. The thing
that
makes Lake Owen stand out is the other things
it has besides gymnastics.
It is located in the woods on a nice lake with a
beach. They had a
boat for water-skiing, boat for intertubing,
canoeing, and wind-surfing.
They had all the things of a "normal"
summer camp in
addition to
great gynastics.

What was this about the
women getting more respect than the men.The
US
women
are at a
much higher level internationally than the men are.Almost
all
the
women from
the US team have routines that start in the 9.8-10.00
range.There
aren't many
from the men's that start that high. Why doesn't
someone
tally the
medals
that the men have won since '84 and compare them to the
women's.There's your answer right there!
------
You
can't use scores to compare the men's and women's
teams
the scoreing
systems are too diffrent. Women's scoreing
is higher
than men's. In the '94 world championships Ivan Ivankov won with a
57.012, Shannon Miller won with a
39.274. Ivan averaged a 9.5
and
Shannon a 9.8. In women's the 16th place person had a
9.5 average.
The US women's team is at a higher level internationally,
not because
they have higher scores than the men,
but because they are placing
higher.

Nadia on TV
Did anyone else see the ABC special, "A Passion to
Play," yesterday? It was
about Nadia and Katerina Witt, but
most of the Nadia info was taken from the
Nadia special
from last month. Next week's
special is called "The
African-American Experience," and I THINK
Dominique Dawes will be on--they
show her picture
in the promo.

Heya.. is the Zuchold
(?) still in the code for Uneven Bars. I think
thats what it was called. Dagmar Kersten
did one in Seoul. Its like
a straddle back to the low bar but its piked
and rotates back instead
of forwards? I havent seen
one in a while but I think they're cool.
Does anyone do one now?

Yeah, I saw it. I thought it was pretty
interesting. They did have
some
additional footage that wasn't in the Nadia
special last time. What I
thought was cool was that they use the same belts we do to
teach skaters
their jumps. I always sort of wondered how they
taught them.

Re: Bela as judge
I didn't see that, but on
Saturday (I think), I saw the exhibition
performances
from some pro skating meet, and Usova and Zhulin did theirs
to the same
music Mitova used. Does anyone know the name and/or
composer? I thought
Mitova's interpretation was better.

Yes, it's still in there.
There are several varieties of this skill that
depend
on how you start and whether or not you end in a handstand (or
even let go of the bar at all). They are all "Schleurden"s
because that
refers to the dislocate part of
it. The one you're thinking of that
ends
in a handstand is a Zuchold-Schleurden
and a D. Haven't seen anyone
do
it since '88 (Maria Ines Flores of Guatemala
did it too, but I don't
think she quite hit a
handstand). The bars are so wide
now that it might
actually be worth the D it's
rated.
