I love Amanda Borden's floor
routine, but I don't think it has the
difficulty
to be one of the best in the world.
Khorkina's dance is the
best
I've seen since Kathy Johnson (and possibly ever), and she's got some
unique and solid tumbling. I didn't really like Khorkina;'s
gymnastics
until this meet, but I'm sold.

The three releases in a row in Podkopaeva's routine impressed me. Two
hop-fulls in a row--wow!
I'm glad Podkopaeva
took medals on all four events.
She's one of my
favorite gymnasts and it's
always frustrating to see her almost make it to
the
podium.

USOF '95 gymnasts
Here's a piece of a press release from the folks at
the U.S. Olympic Festival:
ARTISTIC GYMNASTICS (women) -- Several top U.S. gymnasts are
scheduled
to compete at the U.S. Olympic
Festival-'95, July 27-30, in Boulder, Colo.
Leading the roster is 1992
Olympian Kerri Strug from Tucson,
Ariz., who will compete for the West team. Strug placed second in the
1994 NationsBank World Team
Trials in Richmond, Va., and went on to
help lead
the U.S. women to the silver medal at the Team World
Championships
in Dortmund, Germany, during the same year.
Returning to the
Festival is Doni Thompson from Colorado Springs,
Colo., competing for the North team. Thompson placed fifth
all-around
at this year's McDonald's American Cup
in Seattle, Wash., and sixth
all-around at the
1995 American Classic in Oakland, Calif., her first
meet
as a senior competitor.
Also
returning to this year's Festival are Kristy Powell and
Larissa Fontaine.
Powell is from Colorado Springs, Colo., and has been
on
the National Team for three consecutive years since 1991. Powell
also competed in the McDonald's American Cup in Seattle,
Wash.,
earning gold medals in all-around, vault
and uneven bars. Fontaine is
from Deerfield, Ill.,
and was a 1994 Team World Championships silver
medalist.
Fontaine also finished 17th in the all-around at her first
appearance at a World Championships competition in Australia
in 1994.
She has been on the National Team for five consecutive years.
Powell
will compete for the North team, and
Fontaine will compete for the
East.
Competing for the
South in this year's Festival are Marianna
Webster
from Joplin, Mo., Jenny Thompson from Wichita Falls, Texas,
and Soni Meduna
from Colon, Neb., all of whom competed in the 1994
Goodwill Games in St.
Petersburg, Russia, last summer.
Beth Rybacki of
Charter Oak Gymnastics will coach the North team
while
Dynamo Gymnastics' Peggy Liddick will coach the South
team. The
East squad will be coached by Dena Baker of Gymstrada
Gymnastics, and
Deana Parish of Cypress Academy will coach the West
team.

Re: European Cup
I love Podkopaeva,
too. She's a terrific gymnast, and
her floor routines
are the best. Plus I love the way she seems enjoy her
gymnastics. A lot
of the women look so sad.

Khorkina
Date sent: 4-JUL-1995 18:28:15
Having now seen
my mailbox get some somewhat defensive comments
about
Khorkina, I think I'd better add this. I
did NOT say I did not like
Khorkina's floor
routine. For what it's worth, I think it's terrific.
But there are some
definite points in the routine that move too slow.
I like choreogrphy that uses the music, not just works around it.
Most
of the time she did use it, but there were
some points that she didn't
and that is why I
don't think the routine is as strong is it could have
been.
And
Borden throws an arbian double front (an E) a 2 1/2
twist (a D, not
knowing what the punch front does
for it) and a punch front, front full
punch front
(a D, but not sure). So...is that difficult enough? Her problem
isn't the difficulty, it's hitting the routine. She can,
I've seen her
do it.
As for Podkopayeva's bar routine, I also enjoyed the two hop-fulls to
Gienger. Nicely
done. But the form break was there, and I thought Khorkina
hit just as well, , but had a more interesting routine in
terms of
combiations and
transitions.
