Maria was born on June 4, 1982, in Birlad.
Her father died when she was four years old, and her mother was forced to put
Maria into a children's home because she could not afford to take care of
her. At the home, Maria showed a great interest in gymnastics and managed
to pass the entrance exams for the famous Deva school. A solid junior
gymnast, she made a smooth transition to the senior ranks. In 1999, Maria
won the world AA title -- only the second Romanian woman to do so.
