Gertrud (Trudi to her friends) was born on March 4, 1964
in Arad. Of Hungarian and German descent, the Romanian authorities called
her by her middle name, Emilia, so she would appear more Romanian. She trained with Bela and Marta Karolyi in Onesti and later at
CSS Cetate Deva.
Trudi defected to Hungary in
mid-1989 and worked as a coach. There she met her future husband, Ferenc
Kollar, and the two moved to the USA in 1991. Their son, Roland, was born
in 1999. Today Trudi's a coach at Pozsar's
Gymnastics Academy in California.
