Kasamatsu was born on July 16, 1947, in Mie. At age 10, he began taking a recreational tumbling class in the evenings, and by junior high school he was training in all of the gymnastics events. He was the 1974 AA world champion but an emergency appendectomy kept him off the 1976 Olympic team. His wife, Kazue Hanyu, is also a former Olympic gymnast. Their son, Akihiro, is a member of Japan's national team.
