Subject: Attention: Western Australian Coaches

A couple of weeks ago, someone from Western Australia replied to my
looking-for-coaches posting for the Nepean-Corona School of Gymnastics in
Ottawa, Canada.  All attempts to reply have been bounced.

I understand that the gymnastics program at the Western Australian Institute
of Sport is being migrated to AIS and that some coaches are now outplaced.
If you are one of these coaches, we ARE interested in you and want to see
your resume.  Please contact Agnes Laing, the Executive Director, at
(613)224-6524 (we are 13 hours behind you) or fax your resume to (613)
224-7785.  Agnes will be in Boston from June 27th to July 1st.

If you reply to me via e-mail, please leave a telephone or fax number as a
backup so you may be contacted.

Regards,

Grace

Subject: cruise meet?

I know that there is a cruise meet sometime in the spring.  Does anyone know
anything about this?

Also, I recently visited Ohio State Univ. at Columbus and I was very
impressed with the campus.  Does anyone have any idea how their women's
gymnastics program is?  I know that their men's team won NCAA's this year,
but I don't know anything about their women's program.

Please e-mail me privately if you have any info. about the cruise meet or
Ohio State.
Thanks in advance!

Subject: Olympics almanac

At the grocery store this past weekend I saw one of the Olympics almanacs that
are coming out to cash in on the Olympics. I do not know who published it (I
couldn't find anything to indicate its publisher) but off hand it looks like the
same people who put out Sports Illustrated. Anyway, it has a few pages covering
each sport, including gymnastics. The information is pretty good except for one
illustration that shows Kerri Strug on beam but identifies it as Shannon Miller.

But to the  point, there is a picture of the 1948 US men's Olympic team in the
article. Why? I do not know. And there is no indication as to who all is in the
picture. So, two questions for gymnastics experts out there: were there only
men's gymnastics in the 1948 Olympics (held in London) and who can identify the
members of the 1948 US men's team?

The men in the picture are wearing their college leotards. So, I can see that
some are from University of Pennsylvania.

>      I just saw a commercial on NBC for the US Olympic trials to be
broadcast next week.  The only two gymnasts shown were Moceanu and Miller.
Doesn't NBC know that these two gymnasts aren't even competing in the
meet?

That has been replaced with a new spot:  Dawes, Strug and Phelps (?).  Btw,
the info was also in the papers, not just online
:-)

I've heard (tho have not seen anything official) that Jade Davidson has been
pulled out of the Australian team because of a bad back.  Her place has been
taken by Nicole Kanteck.  Kirsty Leigh Brown is still not 100%.  Has been
training with a mat on vault, and lots of mats for soft landings.

A friend of mines daughter, had the same injury..it took about 3 - 6 weeks
to heal.  It did heal, the key to her healing was to rest it, not do any
working out on it and ice every time it hurts.  She did recover
completely..but I think the decision to quit or not to quit is up to you and
your daughter.  If she isn't in to competitions that much maybe just a
tumbling class.

Subject: sea world

I've never posted before, but I had a great gymnastics experience
yesterday.  I live in San Diego, and yesterday I went down to Sea World
during their Olympic Spirit Festival.  They had a bunch of special events
surrounding this.  Early in the morning I saw some local gymnasts perform.
The best part was an entire acro team was there.  They were all really good
and a lot of fun to watch.  The three girls team was really incredible.  In
the background there was a poster advertising that Jamie Dantzscher and
Vanessa Atler were going to be there, but I never saw them.  Maybe they
showed up later.  I really would have liked to see them.
In the afternoon I saw Bart Conner and Nadia Comaneci put on a really
cute show.  They had brought four (two girls and two boys) level 10 gymnasts
from their gym in Oklahoma.  The interesting part was when they introduced
the girls coach who was there, Betty Okino.  Betty is in the "Olympic Summer
Nights" show that will show every night this summer.  I went back for that
and really enjoyed it.  It had ice skating and rythmic and artistic gymnasts.
Valerie Kondos choreographed the entire thing.  Betty is a really great
dancer; I would like to see what kind of floor routine she would do now!
I hope you found this interesting.
