One
interesting side note. I
happened to be in Britain in December 1984.
The BBC ran a 30ish-minute special on the
gymnastics events in the 1984
Olympics, sort of a look
back. They gave about 3
minutes to Retton, then
said
(roughly) "but the real star of the Games was Romanian Ecaterina
Szabo .
. ." and Szabo got about 15 minutes of coverage. Having only seen US
coverage to this point, it quite stunned me to see Mary Lou
essentially
dismissed like that . . .

right, Kristy Phillips left Bela to go to another
coach,
She
was doing great while she was with Bela
Hardly. Bela deserted
his athletes in 1987 at both Pan Ams and Worlds
because of an ego battle with the USGF. Phillips isn't my favorite gymnast,
but she can hardly be blamed for leaving after the Worlds
fiasco.

Sherwin hit the nail on the head with his comments about Mary
Lou.
She was basically in the right place at the right time, but I
still
don't care for her gymnastics.
I
took a trip down memory lane and was reading some old IGs, and I
was wondering what happened to Soni
Meduna and Susie Kinkaid? They
haven't
been mentioned in IG for some time, yet from memory I'm sure
they were both
on the USA Junior time in 1994.

I am a member of the swedish
national team of artistic gymnastics.
I need a competition in november or december.
My question is if
there are any competitions at
that time in Europe. I know that there
are
competitions in Germany in the Bundesliege. If anyone
know more
about the demands of taking part of one
or two competitions in the
Bundesliege or any
other competition in Europe please write to me.
My
gymnastics standard is around 53 points.
I have already checked the gymn calender.
Is the Grunwald cup in Poland still going?

A popa is a full twisting straddle jump. It's unusual to see
a
gymnast not perform them because they used to be
an easy way to get bonus
points- correct me if I'm
wrong but I think they lowered it from a D to a
C value.

Hilary quit gymnastics and last I heard she was trying to get a
diving scholarship.
Being that you're new to the list you do not know
that
when Little girls in pretty boxes first came out there was a massive
discussion about how inaccurate the book was.

I know many who attend
gymnastics meets because I tell them when they
are
going to be held. The university doesn't normally advertise when
competitions
will be, and when they do, they put it in the local
newspaper

Don't know about Susie Kinkaid, but Soni Meduna was at Nationals
this
year.
Forget where she placed, but I'm sure it's in the Gymn
digests
somewhere. Meduna was on the 93-94 junior national team (placing third AA
behind Jennie Thompson and Tanya Maiers),
and so was Kinkaid, I think
(I'll have to check my IG poster of that team
tonight :)
On the topic of injuries, my parents and I were discussing
this very
topic when we were in New Orleans (I
used Borden as an example of a
healthy gymnast,
and that night we found out she had scratched...:) I
think it
does have to do a lot with body type in the sense that Dory
meant -- some people just seem to be more prone to injuries
than others.
For example, one girl at my gym recently quit because of
injuries; she
seemed to have an "injury du
jour" and when her back felt better, her
knee
would feel worse, etc. I
*seriously* doubt that this had anything
to do
with how hard our coaches are pushing us and stuff, because her
case is isolated at our gym. It was probably just that she was a
little
more injury-prone than the rest of us. Having said that, however, it
seems that certain gyms seem to have higher injury rates
than
others...(I'm *not* accusing any coaches of
abusive training methods,
just stating something
I've observed. Please take it as
such.)

I quite agree with your anger
concerning the stereotyping that occurs because
of
colour. Becomming an elite
athlete in *any* sport is a combination of many
atrributes, least of all skin colour.
Having said this, body build does play a
part, and
as I understand it people of african origins have a
genetic pre-
disposition towards certain muscle
types. However, a predisposition is just
what it
says, a predisposition, not a rule set in stone. Furthermore, (again,
if I have my facts correct) the muscle predisposition of
people of African
origins is biased towards fast
twitch muscle - just the sort required by
sprint
sports such as gymnastics!!
Having said the above I must reiterate
that I believe that the most important
aspects a
performer must have if he/she is to succeed are mental not physical.
As an
example one of the best performers I have trained in the last few years
(trampolining not gymn) is from Mauritius and has such severe asthma that
she
cannot do more than a couple of minutes
exercise without coughing. This
obviously makes
training difficult yet she is qualified to complete in the
British A grade
(the highest competition grade)!!

matter'

A thread in recent discussion regards injuries in
gymnastics. As a
concerned scientist with interest in gymnastics I believe
that injury
is perhaps the most problem facing
gymnastics, but seldom receives
much press unless
the injury is spectacular (i.e., catastrophic). As
a
chapter co-author (Caine, DJ, Linder, KJ, Mandelbaum,
BR, &
Sands, WA (1995?) Gymnastics, In Caine, DJ, Caine, CG, Lindner,
KJ
(eds) Epidemiology of Sports Injuries. Human Kinetics.) in
a soon-to-
be published book on injury
epidemiology in sport. I believe the
gymnastics
chapter does a terrific job of surveying the world
literature
on gymnastics injury epidemiology.
Our best information
indicates that from
2-10 children are paralyzed yearly by virtue of
participation
in gymnastics. Although injury is
ubiquitous in sport,
I am astonished and dismayed by this information. IMHO this is the
area
where gymnastics research, funding, and attention should be
concentrated.

Actually,
there is (or was) a limit on the number of male coaches allowed
on the floor during the team competition -- you could have
one man at most.
Whether this has changed with the 7-6-5 format
I don't know.

People always read into things that were not
meant to hurt or offend a
person. I am angry at
some of the stupid people in this world . If Dory
meant
something different than she meant something different. By writing
the post yesterday I was mad at those who were talking about
body
structure to exclude other. I was not
attacking Dory personally. Since we
can not write
long posts that explains everything that we said or mean
people
must often interpret. . Depending on a person's mood or what they
are thinking at the time people will interpret things
differnetly. I love all the
Olympic sports and I know that there is a lot
of
information out there that will help explain why someone does better
than another. Oh yeah, has any one have the new IG 2. were can I order
that book on

The TV are in the
middle of showing session two, including the
likes
of Bulgaria, Ukraine and France when they had to leave.
I guess
session three will include Russia.
Each country performed once on each
apparatus today.
Those whom I've seen performing today include:

Lukianenko (BLR), Eugenia Pavlina (BLR) (no sign of Olga Gontar),
Maria
Petrova (BUL), Diana Popova
(BUL), Magdalena Brzeska (GER),
Kristin Sroka (GER), Alina Stoica (ROM), Hanna Laiho (FIN)
(who
had grown a lot bigger than I last saw her),
Andrea Szalay (HUN),
Elena Vitrichenko
(UKR), Eva Serrano (FRA), Kristina Kliukevichute
(LTU), etc.
As I've said they haven't shown everything
from Day One so
hopefully I'll get a fuller
picture tomorrow when the Team
competition will be
continuing.

Subject: Giurca's Killer Gets Sentence Reduced
According to
Reuters, a Bucharest appeals court reduced the sentence of
Florin Gheorghe,
convicted of manslaughter in the death of Adriana Giurca,
from eight years [considered in itself a travesty by many -
including me] to
only six years. In addition, the court blocked Giurca's parents from suing
Dinamo
Bucharest for financial damages.

the Bucharest appeal court when the parents of
Adriana Giurca
sought a tougher sentence . . . They wanted to replace a
manslaughter
conviction with a murder verdict. . . Romanian law punishes
murder with up to 20 years in jail.
``I'm shocked
at that ruling because Gheorghe should have been tried and
sentenced for murdering Adriana,'' the girl's mother Maria Giurca told
Reuters after the ruling.
The
court granted Gheorghe's appeal . . . when he admitted to accidentally
killing the girl in November 1993 after she slipped from a
balance beam
during training.
``Dinamo knew the trainer was a brutal man, so they are
guilty too,'' Giurca
said,
adding that she would appeal against Wednesday's ruling.
