Could someone please explain the new tricks which have become commonplace and
review release moves on the bars. Terms like Ivanova, Omelianchek, Onodi, etc.
Thanks:) Brenda

I don't have time to do too much commentary, but just wanted to add that
Jaycie's new music is GREAT! When they said she dropped the classical, I
all of a sudden had that music in my head. And it was! It suits her. NBC
should be shot for their lack of coverage though, and the new vaulting
bonus sucks.

Dear Gymners,

Just finished watching Nationals on TV.  Dominique Moceanu went from 94
Junior Nationals Champ. to 95 Senior National Champ.  Is this the first time
this has occurred?  Who else has done it?  When?

Gymnastically yours,
David =]

PS- I was disappointed that Shannon changed her floor music.  The music she
used at the Kodak invitational was GREAT!  Anyone else share my feelings?

I could be mistaken about this, because I haven't looked it up, but
didn't Kristie Phillips go from junior champion in 1986 to senior champion in
1987?

I'll break down my comments and questions from tonight's coverage:
1. Moceanu- looked really amazing.  All the difficulty was there, but I was
most of all impressed by the poise and positive attitude.  I don't think Bela
needs to worry too much about his self-named "Zmeskal Syndrome."  Dominique
seems to like the expectations to win and the comparisons to Nadia, and she
touted herself the 1996 Olympic Champ three years ago.  In response to
someone's question- Zmeskal won back to back Jr. and Sr. titles in 1989 and
1990.  I don't know any others off the top of my head.
2.  Miller-  I'm really impressed.  She looks so mature, yet has upgraded her
difficulty.  (esp. floor with 4 passes including two full-ins and a double
front twist)  She seemed even more dissappointed than last year.  I hope she
wins an event title (floor and vault would be my choices for the most
probable)
3.  Phelps-  NBC didn't show the beam, where she had some problems, or the
vault, where she got good scores.  But what I did see was the most dramatic
improvement since the last time she was on TV (World Trials, Mixed Pairs)
Her lines are beautiful and her difficulty is good.  Watching the
improvement she has made over the past two years, I'll definitely consider
her to be a major player for 1996.
4. Dawes- The floor makes her look sluggish.  She is older and taller, but
she can still tumble.  She needs a new routine that's not as bouncy as '92,
but that still shows off what she can do.  The 1994 routine was much better!
In general, she did not look as confident or sharp as last year.  I wouldn't
say her time has passed, though.
5.  Strug- Why can't NBC show more than the routines of the top 4???  From
the reviews here, it sounds like she had three routines that would have
merited coverage.  I hope to see her on TV in the event finals.  (Maybe in
the running for a bars or vault title, I hope??)

***Coverage-  I would be perfectly happy to lose the prime time slot in
exchange for two or three hours of coverage of routines in the afternoons.

***Since NBC is so limited in coverage, Thanks So Much to those of you who
are there and sharing with us what's really going on!!!

Subject: new gymn commentator?

Those of you who are new to the list probably don't even know who I am,
as I've been too busy to post (or even keep up a lot of the time) lately.
But I helped Rachele start this list, way back when.  Other "old-timers"
might remember that almost 2 years ago I had a baby (my first, and so far
only).  I hope you'll indulge my presentation of Ryan's commentary on the
NBC coverage tonight.

Ryan noticed the TV during Jaycie Phelps' floor routine:

Ryan: who's dat?
Me: That's Jaycie
R: Jaycie's on the TV now
M: Yes she is, look what she can do...
<Jaycie does her first tumbling pass>
R: Upside down!  She's upside down now!  Oh Coke-Cola! (did *you* notice
the advertisement beside the floor mat?)  We had coke-cola in the car...

Ryan lost interest until Dominique M's floor routine.

<Dom does her first tumbling pass>
R: Yay!! <clapping>  Oh Coke-Cola!  We had coke-cola in the car...
(yes, a 2-year-old is even better than an echo)
<Ryan is quiet until the end of Dom's routine>
R: Yay!! <more clapping>

Looks like he's going to end up being a bit tall to be a gymnast, but
perhaps he has a bright future as a gymnastics commentator.  Not a single
comment about how wide the beam is, or how much pressure these girls are
under... I think I like his style :)

Ryan didn't have much to say about the scoring, but his mommy would love to
know what kind of special bonus rules they were using to allow Dominique D.
and Shannon to get 9.95's on less-than-spectacular renditions of admittedly
hard vaults.

I really liked Dominique Dawes's new floor music better than her last
one. She has gotten so much taller and more mature she looks better
doing it. The last routine I got sick of watching after the first time.
I still like her tumbling though :)
I was shocked to see that Shannon got new music. She just changed it! I
liked it but I liked the other one too because it was different. While
I am on the subject on music, it seems like Lavinia Miloscivici changes
her music in every meet I see her in. She changes music more than she
changes her underwear! :) Just kidding, I hope :) I really like her new
one that she had in the team worlds. It was cool. I really thought that
Kerri Strug's old country routine was awesome too. I like her new one
but her other one was sooooooo cute and the country one is hard to beat
:) It seems like Kerri changes hers a lot too.

I was very disapointed not to see Amanda Borden but for all of those
people that live in Ohio that get channel 5 news, they are having a
story about Mary Lee Tracy on "Upclose with Norma Rashid" Monday at
11:00 PM. It looks good. Thet had an advertisement during nationals.

I was also disapointed on the coverage of the Nationals. I know that
they have other things to show but they could show but they only showed
the top four gymnasts. Kerri Strug is a great gymnast and they could
have shown one routine! I really liked the story about Dominique
Moceanu. The Shannon story was a bit brief (and tacky :) )but it was
cute.

Wasn't Dominique Moceanu's sister? (they showed her at the end)
adorable!! She looked just like Dominique :) I know this is being a bit
picky but why doesn't Shannon's coat (red and white Dynamo jacket)
match her leotard (pink and black Dynamo). I know I am getting into the
details but shouldn't they match? I always thought that Dynamo's colors
are pink white and black. I like their new leotard though.

Wasn't Jaycie's leotard awesome! I also like Dominique Dawes but she
could have lost the sprinkles in her hair. She didn't even have
sprinkles in her leotard! I like the sprinkle idea but I prefer it if
they have it in their leo. I know I am being criticle so I guess I'll
shut up in a minute. :)

I liked the way Jaycie Phelps smiled when she was done her routines. I
really liked her new floor music. It was a lot better than her
classical. It showed more personality. I loved her double front. :)

Also, isn't Katie Dyson subscribed? If she is, good job! I didn't see
you compete but great place! Bye!

Margi :)

Subject: Coverage

The tv coverage of nationals was truely pitiful. what ever happened to Kerri
Strug and Amy Chow. At the 94 Worlds the commentators were saying how Amy
could be the next star with the way she sparked the US teams performance and
now they dumped her for the next media blitz. Not that I have anything
against Dominique Moceanu, I think its about time that the ex-juniors take
their rightful spots on the team. After all they need to build their names
for Atlanta. Congratulations to the two who finally broke through Dominique,
and Jaycie. They were great.

Subject: Khorkina article

That was  a really good article about Svetlana Khorkina. Thanks Beth
for translating it. Since Jaycie is from Cincinnati, where I live, they
will probably have an article about her tomorrow although they don't
seem to like writing about Amanda and big meets like this they seem to
be a bit slow on. We should see an article by next month :). They'll
probably write how Amanda got injured and mention briefly about how
Jaycie beat returning champion Dominique Dawes. They always seem to
have a local angle on it and won't even mention how a 13 year old won
and Jaycie, a 15 years old from Cincinnati did so well. Oh well, just
assuming that they have an article I will send a brief summary about it
and I will try to sum up the interview with Mary Lee Tracy after it
(11:00 PM... yawn.. :)  ) Or if I end up taping it I will report in the
morning. I gues I am just babbling so I'll go now.... I ca't wait till
the competition on tomorrow....Bye!

Margi :)

That Ryan thing was cute :)

I am personally very sick of the commentators. I was sooosooosoooo sick
of Julianne McNamara in the Olympic Festival and Elfie Schlegal (sp?)
saying that EVERY time a young gymnast messed up or did something wrong
they would say "Well, once again their inexperience is shining
through." I was about to press the mute button (except it was mainly
floor exercise and the tv. up in my room doesn't have a remote so I
would have to get up :) But if it did and it wasn't floor exercise, I
would have :)  ) What is it, some new deal with
Tylenol?...headaches..Tylenol...ha ha ha (Mardi put in that part)
Watching the Olympics I noticed that their was some way Elfie managed
to keep quiet during a floor routine...she's not dead yet... she wasn't
fired...the world kept spinning.... and we understood when someone did
a back flip or stepped out of bounds or fell on their butts.

I know this is pretty mean but I am getting sick of it. Actually I did
notice when Mary Lou came on during the Olympic Festival event finals
and commentated there was a rair moment where Julie Ann wasn't talking.
:) Since I am talking about the event finals.. who ever won the Mary
Lou Retton award? Just wondering. Bye!

Margi :)........and Mardi ;)
