Subject: Worlds: Canada Qualifies One Gymnast to Finals!

In semi-final action at the 1996 World Gymnastics Championships, Richard
Ikeda from British Columbia grabbed the eighth spot on men's horizontal
bar tonight with a solid performance to qualify for the final round.
With a score of 9.550, Richard will compete with Vitaly Scherbo and 6
others on Saturday evening.

There were a number of falls from the high bar beginning with a
disastrous performance by former world champion Ivan Ivankov of Belarus
who finished last. Alan Nolet of Burlington, Ontario overshot his
one-arm Tkatchev by about 3 feet and ended up in 14th place. Falls by
all other big guns eliminated Germany's Andreas Wecker and Russia's
Alexei Voropaev.

Richard also competed on parallel bars and came a respectable 12th
with a clean routine (9.512) in a high quality field. He was tied with
Jesus Carballo of Spain.

Richard is competing here in San Juan without the coaching of his father
Mits Ikeda.

Just a short note to get the FAX (!) out. Anyone interested in sending a
letter directly to Oprah regarding the "Pretty Girls in Little Boxes" show
can send it by FAX to (312) 633-0606. I have read numerous powerful
statements here on the GYMN, and I think it would be worthwhile if the
authors of those comments sent them directly to the Oprah show.
