You can now find the result of the meeting at this site

http://www.nbn.it/itagym/donne/incontri/fano.html

Russia won the team competition and Roza Galieva the individual one.
Kochetkova did not participate.

Being the last test before the Olympics, Rocchi, Montagnolo and Meneghesso
will go to Atlanta for Italy.

Another mistake, in the June/July IG in the men's NCAA coverage... but
nothing as obvious as a photo miscaption... the article noted that the most
exciting moment in high bar finals was "Peter Hegi" from Stanford attempting
a full-twisting layout Tkatchev... actually it was Gewin "Puff" Sincharoen,
from Cal (who has a very good layout Tk, by the way).

Personally, if people can petition straight onto the US women's team, my
opinion of those people will plummet.  They ain't playing fair.

But then again, I believe the USAG has a lot to answer for, for making
trials worth 100% in the first place.  Perhaps they should take into account
scores from the USAs, as in previous years.  No wonder gymnasts say the
trials are more stressful than the actual Olympics themselves.

Anyone can have a bad meet.  What happens if Shannon or Dom M finishes 8th
in trials????  Does anyone really think USAG will keep these stars off the team?

BTW, the Australian women's team will be announced tomorrow.  Fortunately,
the AGF has counted scores from Nationals and trials, as well as training.

I think there were a couple of reasons for going back to the old
way.  It is a team competition after all and I think having the gymnasts
not competing together took away from the flavour of that.  Also, since
the coaches could pick who went in each round it kind of defeated the
purpose of doing it that way; you could still send a signal as to whom you
were promoting on your team based on who competed in what round during the
meet.
When will it be decided in what rounds the specific individuals
will be competing in?  I can only hope that Yvonne Tousek gets to be in
the same group as Oksana Chusovitina...it would be great it they could
feed off each other's scores.

While I do agree w/many of the points that
have been made about petitioning onto the Olympic Team, I have to see
it a different way. Moceanu is severly injured and competing at the
trials could very well agravate her injury. We all know that she would
make the Olympic team anyway and she deserves to be on that team.
Competing w/such a severe injury will most likely make it worse and
that could hurt her individual chances and the teams chances at the
Olympics. I do understand that the federation is trying to make this
trial as fair as possible but I have to side w/Moceanu on this one.

I just checked this out, and Oksana Fabrichnova was listed under the Russian
team!!!!! Is she healthy again!!!

She only did two events (based on the scores of 18.925 (C) and 18.80 (O).

BTW: Grosheva competed, so she must be better than at San Juan.

Bogi was third!!! Marinescu was 5th (UGH!) Russia won the team event.
I really thinkk people are down playing this team and they WILL
be on the podium in Atlanta. With all six guns running at their
best, they could win it all. They could beat the Chinese!

As an aside, Marinescu finished fifth to Bogi's 3rd. But they had the
SAME optional score. As did Piskun. Just thought I'd tell you that
piece of information.

Subject: Intro & sport psych info

Hello, everybody - I've been on the list for a couple months now,
but this is my first post so I'll introduce myself.  My name is Jen, and
I am a junior at Connecticut College.  I did gymnastics for 14 years,
until the pain from ACL surgery and juvenile rheumatoid arthritis got to
be too much, and I recently took up diving.  Gymnastics is still my
first love, and some of my favorites now are Pods, Mo, Moceanu, Dawes,
Borden, Miller, Milo, and I still love Zmeskal.
I plan on pursuing a career in sport psychology, so if anyone out
there has any kind of info on it - graduate programs, internships, etc.,
could you please email me?  ANY info would be greatly appreciated.
Also, I will be attending the Trials (women's comp. & opt., and
men's opt.), as well as all the women's events in Atlanta (still in shock
that we got tickets!), so if anyone out there is interested, I would love to
meet you!

What if Jaycie Phelps, for example, has a bad day at Trials and fails to
make the team?  According to the rules, she would be out, while a gymnast
who finished below her at Nationals would be given a spot on the Olympic
team.  Not fair at all.  Being the current media darling does not make one
"deserving" of an Olympic berth, particularly if the darling in question
has such a servere injuy.

If Moceanu's injury is that serious, it seems highly unlikely that she
would be miraculously, completely recovered in time for Atlanta.  IMHO, it
would be better to give a slot to a healthy gymnast.

Not a flame, just my opinion...

Laura,

This is not a flame, but...

What happens if Moceanu's injury does not heal by the time of the Olympics?
Once a team is named, as I understand it, there can be no substitutes other
than the "offically" named alternate.

This was something that happened during the last games.  Michele Campi was
named the alternate, but her back was injured and even if she would have been
needed, she could never have been a substitute.  Another reason why Kim
Kelly *should* have been on the team.

Finally, *no one* is a sure thing.  Injuries happen all the time.  Why sould
any of the other (top six) althelets risk having an injury/off day?

Well, I don't drink but I couldn't resist...

For Tim - drink each time you hear:

"Boy"

"I don't know....I gotta tell ya."

"OOOhhhh, and she makes it!"

Any sentence with the word "huge."

For Elfi, two drinks per the following phrases:

"In this day and age, it just isn't enough."

"Solid"

"I don't think I have ever seen her make that mistake."

"Big, big mistake."

"Absolutely unbelievable."

For John Tesh, drink three, no wait, he's too easy, only half a drink:

"Is *she* the next ..."(Nadia, Mary Lou, you fill in the blank)

Any sentence where there is any use of the verb "to cry."

"Do we have a story to tell you about her."

Slam whatever is left of your drink/soda/ice tea if at any time you hear
John Tesh music being played.  (It's harmless, that music is sure to
bring the beverage right back up.)

All in good fun,

Katie

really suprised no one has mentioned this yet, but GYMN's own Adriana Duffy is
featured for her work at PUR Worlds!  Adriana, I had no idea of your many
accomplishments (gymnastic and otherwise) and, frankly, fascinating life!  It is
wonderful to 'put a face [and a background] with the name' that so often informs
and enlightens us on this very list.  To say that I had no idea of your
challenges and accomplishments is an understatement...Now I see how you got to
be so darn knowlegable in this sport!

I certainly don't know Adriana personally, but from what I've read in IG and on
this list, she seems like a real example for us all.  Bravo, Adriana!

In awe,
Michele

This is nothing fancy, but I was wondering if anyone had a list of who
would make the US Olympic Team. (I know it already seems pre determined, but)
Here are my picks: And in no perticular order!!!
1. Shannon Miller (I don't know WHY but she always seems to make it!)
2. Dominique Moceanu (I'm not fond of this one!)
3. Dominique Dawes
4. Kerri Strug
5. Jaycie Phelps (At first I didn't think she would be any good but she
shut me up!!)
6. Amanda Borden or Jennie Thompson or Amy Chow or Mohini?
I really would have loved to see Kim Zmeskal make this team because I
think she would have really helped, but she just wants to do professional
meets (what ever those are?)

First, of all, I am sorry to hear that Gina Gogean may miss the 1996
olypmics with appendicitis. I thought that was a minor ailment. Some
surgery, a few days of rest, and you were back to normal. I guess not. I
hope she recovers soon. The gymnastics competition would be slighty
diminished by the loss of such a good gymnast.

Second, who was that guy who made that post about the olympics being about
glory, "thrill of victory and the agony of the feet"? (I know who he is, but
his protection, his real name will not be revealed). He must live in an
another country. I live in the olympic city. We have been catching hell ever
since 1991. The situation for the average citizen has gotten more difficult
recently. And the worse it yet to come. What Atlanta has gone through until
now, has been a picnic, compared to what will happen in the next 30 days.

I know some people on this forum hate anything that even smacks of a serious
issue, but I am going to say this anyway. I will NEVER, and I mean NEVER,
forget what has transpired in the city of Atlanta, and this region over the
last 5  years (more importantly, the last 2 years). An entire region, an
entire people, (black, white, man, woman, gay, straight, city-slicker,
country-bumpkin, middle class and poor) have been inconvenienced, harrassed,
displaced, and even placed in danger, all for the sake of some politics and
the ungodly gains of some multi-national corporations.

The olympics has NEVER been about some fun and games. If it were, I would
love it. That is why my question on the Spartanburg issue was so important.
If Billy Payne and his ACOG henchmen were "not involved in politics", AS HE
CLAIMED, why did he fall all over himself attempting to punish cities that
dared deviate from ACOG "morals"? As for the money part of the olympics,
THAT"S THE BIGGEST PART. That's what this mess is mostly about- MONEY,
MONEY, MONEY (for the already rich). The rest of us can go the hell, as for
as the olympic big wigs are concerned. I said I would keep this brief (about
the Olympics), and I will.

I just read an article in today's Washington Post about Dom Moc. and it was
grim!  It makes her stress fracture seem *very* serious and makes the Olympic
games seem like (as Elfi would say) "a big question mark" for Dom.  It is a
long article, and of course, goes through the usual stuff about how she's
America's best hope for gold, etc....  Bela Karolyi is quoted as saying that
he and Dom are "not happy campers".  The article also mentions that Dom's leg
seems more serious than Shannon's wrist....

Subject: Dom M. and the Torch Relay...

Hey gang!

I'm not sure if this is old news to all of you because I haven't had
the time to read all of the postings.  My mother called me yesterday
morning to tell me that on the news they were saying that Dom M. has
a 4" stress fracture in her leg.  Her doctor warned her that if she
competes, there is a big possibility that her leg will break.  She
and Bela are now hoping that her scores from Nationals will be enough
to get her on the Olympic team.  At this point, even if she does make
the team, she still may not be able to compete due to a lack of time
for her leg to heal.

I feel badly for her, but she is still young with much room for
improvement.  The next Olympics won't be totaly out of reach for her.
(I'm not trying to take away from the devistation that she'll feel IF
she doesn't make the team; I'm simply looking for some hope. =])
There's still time.  I have my fingers crossed.

If this is totaly old news...I'm sorry.

Anyway, last night the torch came down 5th Ave. in NY.  I was there 2
hours in advance to get some good pictures.  The crowd was sooooooooo
intense!!!  It was great being around people who were just as psyched
about the Olympics as I was!  One thing that really dissapointed me
was the fact that the guy (I don't know his name...excuse my
ignorance.) carrying the torch was walking, and walking really
slowly.  I don't know why, but I was expecting the person to be
running (not even, just jogging).  Anyhow, it was still an intense
moment.  Seeing the flame made me realize just how powerful and
precious the Olympic games are.  The whole experience really moved
me.  Did any other of our NY Gymn members see it?

I CAN'T WAIT FOR THE GAMES TO BEGIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

GO USA!!!
