It won't matter whether Dom's gymnastics will adjust to suit her after
puberty.  It seems, from past statements by Karolyi (and Dom herself), that
she will only be in the sport until the Olympics.

Enjoy her while you've got her.

Subject: Intro (sort of) and questions

I just am re-introducing myself.  I was on the gymn mailing list with the
address PDeranged@aol.com.  Now, I have moved to college and this new
address.  My name is Emily Deringer.  I am very interested in the sport,
but only as a very enthusiastic fan; I have never competed.
Because I have not been connected to the list for the past two weeks, I
just now was able to read the recent digests on the gymn spot on the net,
and I have some questions.
1.  I read that Tanya Maiers had quit gymnastics, but I did not see a
reason or a date that this happened.  Was she still at Aerials?  She had
not competed in so long, I wonder if she got fed up with all the injuries??
2.  Is Jennie Thompson still at Dynamo?  How was she injured so that she
has not competed much all year (she did compulsories at U.S. Classic,
though)?
3.  Any more news about Dawes missing worlds?  How is she injured?  It
must have happened in the past week since she was fine at trials, right?

Well, its good to be back in touch.  Thanks in advance to anyone with
answers to my questions.

Who is the coach of the women's team for Sabae?  How is the coach
picked?  Is it reputation, # athletes on the team, or both?

Date sent:  17-SEP-1995 12:35:56

According to Ken Allen, a teacher at our school who judged at the
trials, the women's coaches will be Steve Nunno and Bela Karolyi.
I was surprised that Tom Forester was not offered some sort of position
give that at the time he had two girls on the team and now has
three (with Kulikowski now officially competing). It could be
interesting with those two coaching, though I hope they do not get
into an ego-war and end up costing some athletes high postions in the
line-up (ie Strug).

Post to Rachele. Rachele, please mail me. I want to make surer the
email i sent to you got through.

Right now I think a better question to ask is does anyone know
for sure who is on the team? Usually all of the coaches go to the
championships but are not supposed to all be on the floor at once. The
head coach used to be voted on but I don't know who did the voting or if
they still use that system.

Well, I sure don't know why my personal mail gets out there the
way it does.  I guess I've got some buggy mail software.  Sure
am glad I didn't say anything too stupid!  Anyway... I'm
looking forward to meeting each and every one of you who were
kind enough to respond to the public distribution of my private
message... Sorry 'bout all the spam!

See ya in Japan!

Mary Lou Retton is hosting a new 3-part weekly series that begins today
(Sunday the 17th of September) called "American Sportswomen."

I think it's a syndicated thing so you should check local listings for
station and time. In my local market (San Diego) it's airing on the local ABC
affiliate at 2:00 PM PDT.

According to advertising it's a "behind-the-scenes" type look at women in
sports. The first -  debut -  episode features women sports anchors.

No mention is made of whether or not  future episodes will include profiles
on any current or past gymnasts.

I think that if she does leave after the Olympics it will be OK.  Even though
she is my favorite and I'd hate to see her go it will be for a good reason.
She probably just doesn't want to be ruined and criticized if something bad
does happen.  It could easily happen that she'll turn into the next Nancy
Kerrigan.  Domonique sounds like she has a good attitude about everything, so
I wouldn't worry.  I think that so many of Karoli's gymnasts have been hurt
and she's just being cautious of it.  You never know, she could quit and make
a comeback for 2000 like Zmeskal, Boguinskaya, or even Karoli himself.

Has not yet been determined, as they still don't know who is going.  On
occasion the
floor coach has not been picked until 1 hour before the start of the
competition.

Every girl has her personal coach go - from there the floor and assistant
floor coach are chosen.  Since they still don't have the team, they don't
have the coach.
