Subject: Dom M on Today

I'm watching the Today show right now and there was just a feature on Dom M.
Talking about her attemptingt to petition on to the Olympic Team because of a 4
inch fracture in her leg.  They showed a taped interview and she talked about
how much she wanted to compete.  At the end the stand in female host who did
the interview was talking to Bryant and saying how the us wants her on the team
so they will let her national scores stand.  Then  Bryant ask if the judges at
trial might play with the scores so no one would knock her off the team and the
lady confirmed they just might since it's a subjective sport.  It was also
mentioned about a thousand times how she was one of the stars, etc, etc.

Subject: Gogean - Euros...

Joy was wondering about Gogean's fall from bars during team competition at
the Europeans.  She was winding for her dismount and peeled off the bar in
a similar fashion to that of Moceanu during bar finals at 95 Nationals.
I think she just managed a tuck off and landed with a thud on the mat.

Khorkina is *still* performing her FX routine to Carmen.

I thought Milosovici's FX routine was 100% improved from PR Worlds.  I
cringed when I first watched it but I would honestly have to say now that
she deserved the FX title outright at Euros as Podkopayeva had three errors in
 her
tumbling.  She is in the best shape that she has been in since Barcelona
and her swing on bars has improved also.  If she can improve her vault and
beam routine, she has a definite shot for an all-around medal in Atlanta.

Btw, Kochetkova now vaults a Yurchenko 1 1/2 but landed poorly during the
all-around.  She did land it well in the event finals though.

Hello there!

My name is Nikki and I'm a 19-year-old college sophomore who
is studying Translation (French and Russian) at the University of Ottawa.
I just got on this Internet thing a couple months ago, but of course I
started lurking around the Gymn files as son as I found them. Great forum
you guys have! Anyway, I've never actually competed gymnastics myself
(due to complete lack of talent), but have been a fanatical follower of
the sport since the Barcelona Olympics. That was my epiphany. So with
that, I leave you all till later.

                        THE KATHY JOHNSON DRINKING GAME

You know the ground rules. Mosey on down to the bar and name your
poison. Turn the telly to ABC gymnastics coverage (or just pop in a
tape), pick a gymnast and drink according to these rules:

*If you pick Lilia Podkopayeva or Shannon Miller, take a sip every time
Kathy talks about how incomparable she is to every other gymnast.

*If the gymnast is know to be one Kathy Jonson dislikes, such as the
Romanians or Dina Kochetkova, everyone has to drink.

*The same applies whenever Kathy mentions toe point.

Everyone has to drink every time Kathy utters the following phrases:

* "Look at her fight for that landing!"

* "She really needs to stick that landing!"

* "She needs to know what that feels like..." (after a gymnast falls on
  some new skill)

* "Podkopayeva is so picture perfect on beam, it's like you have a camera
  capturing every move."

* "The Romanians might not have the really big skills, but they have
*well-designed* routines that are all worth 10s"

* "If you didn't already have enough respect for Shannon Miller, I sure
   you're gainin' it now."

And if Kathy says:

* "Anything less than a 9.9 is too low a mark to give Shannon Miller..."

EVERYBODY'S GOTTA CHUG!!!

Actually, the 60%/40% is only effective here in the US, it is used to help
give the athletes incentive to work harder on the compulsories.  The score
submitted to the Olympic committee for those qualifying to the games will
be 50/50.  Also, the draw for the olympics was done after Sabae.  The order
of team competition has NOTHING to do with qualifying scores.  What
happened is that after World's, where the determined which teams were going
to compete in the games, they entered the names into a computer, called in
reps from all the countries to be drawn and drew the rotation order (yes,
although it has not been released, the officials know which teams will be
in the morning, etc. and it is not allowed to be released to the public
because they don't want people only coming to the US events)

Subject: More petitioning

I just wondered, if DomM and Shannon don't compete at the trials,
will the gymnasts who placed 15th and 16th at USA's be invited to trials?
I remember that in 1992, Traci Sommer was added to the field after Campi
withdrew, even though Campi's USA's score was used to determine her final
ranking, and even though Miller's petitioning to the trials already added
another gymnast to the field.
ANother comment:  As much as I think Moceanu shouldn't be allowed
to petition straight to the Olympic team, as long as both petitions are
confirmed before the trials it will be better than it was in 1992.  One of
the problems then was that Betty Okino's petition was still up in the air
as I recall, so for example Borden had to train in limbo, wondering
whether she'd be invited to the training camp.  If Miller and Moceanu are
confirmed in their petitions before trials begin, the top 5 from trials
will know they will compete and there will be no confusion.

Words can't describe how great Boguinskaia's performance was.  With 95% of
the gymnasts working the code, Boguinskaia does it the best, with the
cleanest form, and the most extension.  Amplitude anyone?  She is the only
person since Sylvia Mitova to have actual beam choreography...

I've always thought that if we could just teach Bogy a front-full, she'd be
competitive again.. and voila...

Now to teach Vanda Hadarean to do one....

Subject: Europeans- coverage and Floor

Coverage: I don't understand why people think that the Europeans coverage was
good!  It was awful!  Besides having that section of running in the middle of
the all around, it can be compared to last year's European cup, also on WWoS.
Last year, they showed the fifth place finisher (Gogean) on 3 out of the 4
events, even after she fell off beam.  At the European Champs this year, the
fifth place finisher (Dina) wasn't shown once, or even mentioned! (Not even
on the final score board: it showed 1st through 4th place, then skipped to
6th.)  Also last year, they continued to show another routine after the
gymnast fell (Gogean, Dina) whereas this year, after Khorkina fell, it was
like she dropped off the face of the earth.  (OK, I'm exaggerating)

floor routines:  I was so disapointed in Amanar's routine. Not with the
tumbling, of course, she's the best (back) tumbler I've ever seen.  But her
music and dance was just terrible. (this may be why she scored so low)  It's
even more sad because you can tell by watching her routine that she *can*
dance.  If she had a nicely choreographed routine, she would be unbeatable on
that event.  I was also mildly disapointed in Pod's music.  Her dance and
tumbling was gorgeous, but the music somehow just didn't seem right.  And
maybe I'm alone on this one, but I liked Bogi's floor.  I'm tired of the
constant bounce of floor routines (eg Amanar) and I thought it was refreshing
to see someone slow down, even if she did have to stand around during some
points. And she had great music, too.  Did anyone else think she was way
ahead of her music during her routine?  Maybe this is why she seemed to be
standing around.... she was waiting for her music to catch up :)

Sorry, I didn't realize this got so long....

Subject: Kathy Johnson on Dina Kotchekova

I meant that during the 1996 San Juan broadcast, It appeared to me that
Kathy was down playing Dina's routine on BB compaired to Dawes. Kathy
always shows alot of favoritism for the USA (and I am sure that may be
due to her many years on the US national team) and she seemed almost
not impressed with the level of difficulty and execution Dina's routine
had in it. She did say "well, its hard to argue with perfection" about
her routine, but she just didn't seem 'into' it as she was with
Dawes.

BTW: Two more things about Euro '96:

        1) Khorkina did a step down to full twisting FF. She shouldn't
get bonus for that since Teza (I Think) doesn't get bonus for
        her tic-toc Onodi.

        2) Khorkina was not the first person to do the full twisting
FF on BB. Dina has been doing since 1994 (Goodwill) and so far,
to date, is the *ONLY* gymnast I have ever seen tumble *OUT*
of a full twisting acrobatic skill on BB. Does anyone know of
anyone else who has done a similar sequence? And, her full-
twisting ff mount is not orginial, either. That was first
done by the italian gymnast Lucconi back at the 1984 Junior
European and is credited to her in the code. Plus Khorkina's
dismount is not original. US national team member Doe Yamishiro
used to do this in the late '80s. Just wanted to clarify those
moves in case anyone askes or wondered.

Dina, Dina, Dina.

P.S. Didn't Amanar step out on FX? wasn't that the case that was talked about
awhile ago?

I think this may have been mentioned before, but a photo of Lisa
Simes from Michigan (former Canadian team member) is erroneously captioned
as another former Canadian team meber, Jennifer Wood.  Also, I don't think
the AA results are complete/correct; I don't see Lisa Simes' name in there
and I know she did all four events and got a good AA total (high 38 or low
39).  I don't see Stella Umeh or Leah Homma in there either; didn't they
do all events?
There is also an error in the PUR worlds coverage of women's FX:
it says Paz tumbled a double layout mount and piked full-in dismount (is
this what Vassou did and was it just the name they got wrong?) when Paz
actually opened with whip to triple-full and ended with another triple
full.  In any case, it's disappointing that they can't get all their facts
straight.

Khorkina still tumbles out of her Lucconi mount (two ffs; she used
to do ff-layout out of it).  I don't know how long Dina has been using the
full-twising ff in her routine, but Khorkina did a cartwheel gainer-ff in
her routine at 1993 Junior Europeans (as well as a cartwheel gainer
layout-full(!) which she missed).

left out many gymnasts.  I could look, but I left my IG at home.

Ok, Khorkina did the lucconi then ff on the beam. I must have forgot about that

and I make mistakes.

BTW: I still don't see any difference between Bogi standing there and
not doing anything on FX while the music goes on and on and Amanar or Milo
doing it.

P.S. As for the full twisting FF on balance beam, did Dina ever do this in

No, she didn't do it in 1991 (the year she finished 3rd behind Hadarean and
Mitova) or 1992, but she did it in 1994 in Brisbane.  The full-twisting FF
btw, either regular or gainer, is dually credited to both Kochetkova and
Khorkina since they debuted them both in Brisbane.  It should be separate
skills imo since they are different.  Has this been changed?  Just curious.

No, I *don't* have a problem with them.  It was just a little "too cute"
to always see Shannon's choreographer (Peggy?) with one, as well as all of
Nunno's girls.

The point I was trying to make is that obviously Jennie isn't a "hair

wear one so that all the Dynamo girls looked just like Shannon.

I'm sure it looks fabulous!  I've found that it also comes together
better if you match the *fabric* of the scruncher to your leotard also,
not just the color.

I'm a little confused as to what Mayland said about the compulsory draws
for the Olympics being kept secret from the public. If this is true, IG doesn't
know about it! Page 46 of the June/July issue gives the compulsory draws for
the men and the women and even reports what apparatus each team will be
starting on. Also, these draws were determined at the Puerto Rico Worlds, not
in Sabae. For people who don't get IG, here are some of the most interesting
draws: The Romanian girls perform in the 1st session and follow the
Olympic-rotation order (V, B, BB, FX); Ukraine is in the second session; the US
is in the 3rd session (with France and 2 mixed groups), and the fourth and last
session features France, Russia, China and a mixed group. UKR starts on bars,
as does the US. France starts on vault, Russia on bars and China on beam.
Men: Germany, Romania and Italy are in session one (starting on pommels,
rings and p-bars, respectively). Belarus (floor), Japan (rings) and the US
(high bar) are in session two. Russia (pommels), China (vault), Ukraine
(p-bars) and France (high bar) are in the third and last session.

are the top 4 from compulsories going to compete in the final session in

Love the drinking game! too bad Kathy's not going to be on for

I just realized I have the French girls performing in two sessions - oops.
They are in the 4th session. It is Spain that is in the 3rd session with the
US, and they (Spain) start on beam.
The compulsory draws were totally random, but (to answer Cara's question),
in optionals the teams will perform on the basis of how well they did in
compulsories, with the top 4 teams in the last round and the top compulsory
team getting to do the events in the Olympic order. I would guess that the last
round will include Romania, China, Russia and the US in some sort of order.
It's hard to predict who'll come out on top in compulsories, since Romania drew
the first round (where scores tend to be low, BUT, they ARE Romania...), and
China starts on beam. That IS normally a strong event for them, but still, who
would want to start the Olympic team competition on beam?
My predictions for the second group would be Ukraine, Belarus, France, and
Spain, with the first optional session consisting of Greece, Hungary, Australia
and Germany. But again it's hard to say who'll be in what position in each
session. Should be an exciting meet!
