I like the current forum.  I feel that we should just put clear
subject headings on our postings.  I know some people only have
particular interests, but I feel they can decide what to read and
what not to throught he current set up.  Many of us are interested
in gymnastics as a whole, not just one part.  For example, I am not
really interested in Men's Gymnastics, but sometimes I read about it.
When I don't feel like reading about it, I just pass over it.  I don't
think we should complicate things by breaking it all up.  This is just
my opinion, but I think many share it.  Even though I am new, I myself
will try to keep my subject headings clear.  I am sure everyone else can
do the same.

Gymnastically Yours,

Question:  What does Shannon Miller plan to do after the '96 Olympics?

I know that she is unable to compete in college due to acceptance of money
during her career (making her a professional).  I would hate to see her
stop gymn.  I feel kind of bad for her.  Maybe she will remain a top
level gymnast.....it would be nice to see.....

Well isn't Romania the worst team ever.  God they have bad attitudes and
I just _hate_ Gogean and her teeth are probably all rotted that's why she
doesn't smile.  And that
Marinescu kid is sorta good but she'll go to pot eventually so we hate
her.  It's amazing how such a horrible team has been in the team medals
since that bad gymnast Nadia won the all around in 76, and won the gold in
team champs for the past two years!  Obviously all these hudges who jusge
don't know anything about gymnastics... or the very rich romanian
goverment must be paying them for the results.  I mean the only thing
they do is consistently perform and not fall off the apparatus.  God can
ANYONE imagine such horrible gymnasts?

Seriously folks I am from Romania and I love the Romanian gymnasts.  I am
very proud of their accomplishments.  It bothers me to see the animosity
shown towards them on this forum.  Opinion is opinion and everyone is
entitled to theirs.  But I think people who post to this list should keep
in mind that the subscribers don't just come from the US, and be a little
more sensitive.

Opinion can be posted in a way that is not disrespectful.  I don't care
if you think the romanian team lacks originality.  Say so.  But to start
saying such and such a gymnast is horrible and never smiles so her teeth
must be rotted.  Or to say that although you enjoyed watching Marinescu
she'll but she'll probably end up as horrible as the other cause she is
romanian bothers me.

Please keep this in mind while posting.

Monica, I for one, feel no disrespect toward the Romanians. However, I
think the criticism that they don't smile or lack originality is vaild.
However, they are good, and deserve what they have gotten ( I will agree
the Chinese lost it in comps). I must point out though, I think the rotted
teeth was an attempt at humor, trying to come up with some reason that
Gogean won't or can't smile.

IMHO, I thought the Romanians looked *much* happier than the US girls
after the team finals in Sabae.  The Romanian girls were hugging each
other (and smiling) while the US girls looked almost suicidal.  Does
anyone besides me find it kind of funny/strange that the US girls'
hugs to their teammates look so strained and fake, while the Eastern
European/Asian teams (from what I saw on ABC) don't seem to have a
problem expressing their feelings? Sorry for getting off the
subject. :-)

Just my 0.02,

Debbie

I figured the teeth comment was an attempt at humor.  All I was trying to
do with my first paragraph is show how someone from Romania, a country
that has very little to be happy about and takes great pride in the
acomplishments of these athletes, might not be amused.

Anyway originality is a matter of taste.  I am so incensed over the
affiar I've been watching my tape of worlds again.  I could make comments
that the Chinese lack originality on beam.  Let's see they all start with
a strength press, they all do a layout, they all do about two Yang Bos,
and they all double back.  But I just accept the fact that among athletes
who train together a lot stuff like that is inevitable.  I admire them
for the elegance they bring while performing as opposed to specific
moves.  I love the Romanians for their strength and consistency.  Etc...

Well, when comments such those are posted then its because the romanians
are certainly the very best and those who write disrespectful messages
are certainly the most incompetents and ignorants not just about
gymnastics but in their lifes too. (sorry if I am being too agressive).

I must say that Nadia Comaneci was known as the ice woman for never
smiling, but I found that when she smiles she certainly got a very nice
smile indeed. Keep in mind that it is not a nice smile that makes a good
gymnast.
Romanians are very good gymnasts and if anyone dislike them then its
because they got their own style and that is something that not everyone
can afford to acomplish.

Greetings from Portugal, the nation who first denied Cristopher Colombo
from discovering America.
We now realise that Spain should have denied him too.

Remember that the romanians live together...they are like sisters.
Our US team  is scattered around the country and don't have the bonds
that the other teams do.

The women of the US team ALWAYS been so fake with their hugs. I remember
seeing this in BArcelona. They may be just concentrating. Bela said that
when the US won Bronze in Barcelona, they looked mad, too. Perhaps
it was the fact that again they have come in as defending silver and
ended up as bronze. I think that had they won silver they would have
been happier.

Remember also that alot of these "foreign teams" are alot more
friendly due to the fact that they tend to train together alot more than
does the US. I am sure that if the US team lived together and trained
together (instead of coming from the 4 corners of the US) then they would
be closer. Perhaps this is the "real reason" why they are not so close.

Last time I really remember the US not being fake was LA '84.

Svetlana Khorkina:  I love this girl.  Her style, her grace, her attitude,
her look....I absolutely love and truly enjoy watching here on all
4 events, especially floor and bars.  I like her on beam, but it
sometimes gets a little old with the twisting moves, but I still
like it.  I was disappointed with her landings on floor at the World
Team Comp.  I hope to see her on Sunday's telecast, sticking every
landing.  The words that stay in my mind are graceful and elegant.
She is not the only gymnast I feel this way about, many others do.  She is
just the current stand out for me.

Chinese Women:  Love 'em!  As good and strong as the
Romanians are, I feel that they might not be the gold
medal winners in Atlanta.....sorry if that offends a certain madam...

Kerri Strug:  It is about time she got into the AA.  I feel so sorry for
how "rough" her career has been (injuries & coach changes).  I think she
is an excellent gymnast and only have optimistic thoughts about her future.

?Betty Okino?  Where is she now and what is she up to?
?Marianna Webster?  Who is she training with? (Steve Nuno?) How is she doing?
?Jennie Thompson?  What has she been up to and what is her status?

I would appreciate replies to me both personally and in the digest.  Thanks!
Gymnastically Yours,
Aaron

No Monseiur rest assured.  This Madam is certainly not offended by your
opinion that the Romanians are not going to be the gold medalists in
Atlanta, although she certainly does not share.  But hey the beam is four
inches wide and anything can happen.  Regarding your private message
monseiur I have decided not to respond to them via private mail.
Anything you don't feel comfortable telling me in public you certainly
should not be telling me in private.
Gymnastically yours,
the Madam (rolls eyes)

Subject: 60 Minutes: Miller's Parents

Following is my summary of an Edmond, Oklahoma newspaper article
appearing in The Edmond Evening Sun, Vol. 106, No. 201, Tuesday,
October 10, 1995; "Abuses Exaggerated, Miller's Folks Say", by Terry
Tush, Sun Sports Editor.

Shannon Miller's parents described the 60 Minutes program as "a full
twisting double-back dismount crashing to the mat."  While admitting
some truth regarding abuses in gymnastics, Miller's parents believe
the news article exaggerates, pulling out bad things and blowing them
out of proportion.  They disbelieve allegations in The Book regarding
Karolyi, and defend their own coach Nunno, described as the "Karolyi
of the Nineties".  Miller's parents state there has never been verbal
"abuse" directed at Shannon, although he did once lose his temper.
The problem was discussed immediately by gymnast, coach and parents,
and resolved without further incident.  They also described Shannon's
experience in Japan, the pain (she called her mom the morning after
hurting her foot and told her she couldn't even walk, and doubted if
she could compete), and her competitiveness, and the will to win that
is developed in gymnasts.  That, says Claudia Miller, is what J. R.
missed.

I am unable to reproduce or fax the entire article.  I suggest you
contact the paper directly for a copy, if you're interested.  My
observation is that the comments demonstrate terrific parental
involvement and concern.  One would have a tough time diminishing the
success of Shannon's parents.
