Hi all,

Thanks for supplying lots of informative discussion, maybe I'll be able
to re-subscribe in the near future. Until then, take care all.

Subject: Strug at Karolyi's

Although I was initially shocked to hear that my favorite gymnast had
made yet another move, I am now convinced that Kerri's move back to
Bela's was a good thing.
        1. By placing 7th AA at worlds she must have seen Olympic medal
potential in her future-escalating her confidence and drive.  But, with
the 7-6-5 rule, she knew that the politics of who she trained with would
inevitably come into play in determining the all-so-important team
competition line up.  If she's with Bela, and if he's the head coach as in
Sabae, she probably has an excellent shot at being late in the line up
for all 8 events.
        2. I don't believe that Kerri can be considered to be going back
into Kim's shadow.  Since Barcelona, Kerri has competed in three worlds
and increased her difficulty on every event.  Kim has done exhibitions
and fun shows, and all we have seen from her lately is two (allbeit
excellent) floor routines.  I think that there is no way it would be
possible for Kim to surpass Kerri's excellence in the next 6 months.
        3.  I'm still not convinced that Moceanu has the difficulty to
surpass the trio of Barcelona competitors when they hit.  So if Kerri is
really on at Nationals or Trials, maybe she will head to Atlanta as
America's #1.  Maybe that's wishfull thinking on my part....any comments?

And, what the heck, I'll throw my US women's team predictions in here
too.  Competing all 8 events: Dawes, Miller, Moceanu, Phelps, Strug
Competing 4 events: (pick 2, I definitely can't): Borden, Chow,
Kulikowski, Powell, J. Thompson, Zmeskal

Is there a roster for American Classic competitors yet?  It will be
interesting to see how people look now that 1996 is here.

I watched the competition of the 6 girls competing floor routines to rock
music, I was pretty impressed.  To all the Kim Zmeskal fans out there, I
am sorry for what I said about her when I first joined this list several
months ago.  Her double-layout was great.  Even though she was the only
one to compete such a pass, I don't feel that the others were lesser of
competitors.  After all, it was for entertainment value and not
completely technical.  Most of the girls held back on their difficulty.
I was glad to see Dawes, Bogi, Miller, Zmeskal, and Moceanu all competing
in the same meet, and lets not forget Powell.  I missed the first couple
of routines, did Amanda Borden compete in the first round and hurt
herself or did she hurt herself just prior to competition?  It was great
seeing her give Boguinskaya a big hug....

I just read Susan's post about the American Classic and I wondered why
Kerri Strug and Kim Zmeskal weren't on the list of expected competitors.
Does anyone know about this.  Kerri qualified to Nationals by being on
the world team so I can understand her wanting to pace herslef early this
season, but Kim has to qualify to Nationals for her Olympic comeback to
work.  Is it worth waiting for the U.S. Classic in May to make her
competition debut?
-Emily
P.S.  Is there anyone going to the competition from gymn?

1) Anyone know of gymnast who have email accounts? Can we email them "fan"
mail?

2) As for the recent posts on Strug, I'd agree that he move could have been
to get "favored status" with a possible Olympic coach Bela Karolyi. But does
Bela have the 'lock' on this position? I know that the coach with the most
athletes on the team has the best shot, but there are other possibilities.

You know, Kerri's postion in the line up may help her get into the AA and an
event final, but she still has to prove herself in the competition. She
may have finished 7th all around, but she qualified from a depleted USA team.
I wonder if things would have been different had Borden, Dawes, and Phelps
been healthy and there. You know, Phelps is rising, Dawes is already there,
and Borden is just getting better. You really have to wonder about this fact
prior to making predictions about Kerri's future.

You know I think she's good. I'd say she great when she does well at US
natis.
I'll just reserve judgement until then.

What are they using the electromyography for?  I was
thinking it could be a possibililty of testing whether the
make-up of the muscle is fast-twich or slow-twitch fibers.
Is your friend using it to diagnose neromuscular disorders
or in the hope of biofeedback training?

Subject: Re: MORE on electromyograms

Well, I guess the purpose doesn't really matter.  Do you
want to know what happens during one or effects?  Well, the
nerves when functioning normally, transmit electrical
impulses that cause the muscles to contract.  The EMG
measures these impulses and it allows the neurologists to
determine the extent and location of the problem.  A lot of
problems can be seen with this...pinched nerves, spine
problems and carpal tunnel syndrome.  Usually, the test is
performed on patients who have muscle weakness, twitching or
paralysis for unknown reasons.  During the test, a flat
metal disc is attached to the skin in the area of question.
A very thin needle is inserted into the muscle group to be
tested and electrical activity is monitored.  The
interpretation of the information then falls to the
Neurologist.  Conditions such as muscular dystrophy and
myasthenia (sp?) can be seen by using this too.
There may be some bruising with this test, but it is very
safe.  The chance of secondary bacterial infection from the
needles is low, but it is still there, so monitoring is
needed too.  Hope this helped you out.  It's kind of
confusing!!

Frankly, no one really knows who will actually show up, but those are some of
the people they're promoting as coming.

Shannon is a *fairly* sure bet since it's in her own backyard (Tulsa is about
2 hours from OKC) and she's the defending champ, but everyone else is really
just guess work on the part of the sponsers; which is why I stressed the
"expected" part.

Current national team members do not have to compete at a Classic to qualify
for Nationals and even Zmeskal could petition directly in on her repuatation
(she did it last year and just chose not to compete after all).

It's basically just another oppurtunity to get in an additional compulsory &
optional "practice" meet in this Olympic year.

I am the one who said before about how the hop came about.  I think I read it
in IG.  I'm sure I did, actually.  It was at the VISA challenge I believe.
Someone  may want to double-check that since I might have interpreted the
tidbit about it wrong.  And I didn't understand before why that wasn't a
deduction.  And frankly, it still seems like it should be, to me.
Anyway, I thought I'd clear that up,

I THINK THIS WILL BE GREAT FOR KERRI STRUG.  YES, SHE HAS LOOKED GOOD
LATELY TOO.  HOWEVER, I THINK BELA CAN GET THE MOST OUT OF HER.  I MAY BE
BIASED
SINCE I THINK HE'S THE BEST COACH IN THE US.  I DO AGREE WITH SOME OF THE
OTHER
COMMENTS THOUGH, THAT KERRI WILL DO GOOD NO MATTER WHERE SHE IS TRAINING.
 OFTEN
SHE BEATS HERSELF.  IF SHE CAN OVERCOME THAT, AND HAVE MORE FUN WITH HER
GYMNASTICS, SHE MAY GO HOME WITH A MEDAL IN 96.  BELA WILL HAVE ONLY A
POSITIVE
INFLUENCE ON HER GYMNASTICS.  I WISH HER LUCK!

It seems to me it should be a rebound deduction also. If I
were judging, I would take a deduction. I mean, if it were a
LEAP...but it is not technically a leap, it is a pointless
rebound with absolutely no artistic or FIG gymnastic value.
If she would run a little bit less into that pass, why not
tag a punch front or layout out front on the end of it
instead of the jump?  I mean, that would earn bonus and it
wouldn't look so awkward. Maybe she has trouble landing
front tumbling passes consistantly though and it's a little
strategic cover-up...who knows. Anne =)
