I think I spelled it right, but not sure (I put it through spell check
and the computer suggeted "sublet").  Anyways, if you sublex a joint
that means it completely pops out of the socket.  I only know this
because Bill Roth had the same thing happen at the Temple qualifiers
(to his shoulder) and so someone explained to me then what
"sublexation" was.

Reportedly Brink just stepped on it and it popped back into place.
When you sublex a joint, it is *very* sore afterwards.

I did hear though, that after the toe sublexation incident, Brink then
injured her knee.  I have no idea how or what the injury was.

Does anybody know the name of male and female African-American gymnasts,
past and present.  They do not have to be on the national team.  Also
with the Olympics in 1996 will anybody go to the worlds in San Juan?
What would be the purpose?  Also with the important worlds in Sabae, who
would go to the gymnastics invitational in Atlanta this year. Actually
only the teams who are qualified for the Olympics can come and I think it
is by "special invitation". I mean that only the "top teams" would be ask
to come even though others have qualified. I will have to check.  The
invitation is in October of this year.66

Just a quick follow-up to Rachele's post.  While her definition
is correct (dislocation), the term is subluxation.

Can anyone explain how "prize money" works for international
competitors?  I remember hearing something once about a gymnast from
Spain -- I think it was Eva Rueda -- who paid for her training with
the $80,000 she won from competitions, and used some of the money to
set her family up with better housing than they would otherwise
have been able to afford.

Do gymnasts routinely get money for placing in international meets?
If so, where does it come from?

Hi gymners!

We are considering moving to the Dallas area and my daughter's big
question is "What gyms are there?".

We currently live in Texas, so she has seen a few of the gyms at
meets, but those were not USAG meets (TAAF, AGA), so we were
wondering if anyone has any information about these gyms and their
ASAG programs.

Thanks,
Starrla

To name a few: Ron Galimore, Dianne Durham, Betty Okino, Chainey Umphrey,
Dominique Dawes, Nekkia Demery, Joyce Wilborn, Kathy Williams (GBR),
Stella Umeh (CAN), Kim Hamilton, Corrine Wright, Dee Dee Foster...

To win medals, of course. :)  The '92 Paris Worlds attracted practically
all of the top gymnasts of that time.  I don't see why San Juan would be
any different.

With the exception of the US participants, the '83 pre-Olympic
invitational in Los Angeles didn't attract any of the top female gymnasts
(an exception was Stoyanova, perhaps).  And I believe the Atlanta meet
will be held in November.

>How does the FIG (or the USGF) help to stop judge bias?

FIG and USAG both  use a statistical system called JOE which tracks the
judges individual placing versus the placing by the panel of judges.  As we
often tell coaches, it's the placing that is most important, not the actual
numerical score.

>Are the same judges used at the big meets (in US: Nationals and
World/Olympic trials and
>Internationally: Olympics, Worlds, Goodwill, now defunct world cup)?

Judges to use at national events are solely the decision of the USAG office.
For International event, I believe that each federation submits a list of
judges and the FIG selects from there.  At that point a drawing takes place
at the event to decide who judges what and for this acting judges, line
judges, time judges, etc are all taken from this pool of judges.  The have
rules about how many judges per nation and such, however.

>What precautions are made to prevent judges who like only certain styles of
performance or only >certain gymnasts from being biased (either way) and
having it reflected in the scoring.

Only JOE is used to help alleviate any bias.  Before each competition,
however, there is usually a judges course where they talk about what they are
going to see and what is acceptible and what is not.  The FIG has a great
video showing the techniques that they prefer and what is desired.

> I think it was Rachele who commented that Monceanu was over scored on VAULT
compulsories
>in both NATIONALS and Worlds. Perhaps she is just liked by the same judges
on that event.

I can't comment on being overscored, however, often the same or similar group
of judges may judge something like nationals and trials.  Usually the judges
that have been selected for major international events (i.e.  World,
Olympics) will judge everthing that year so they are completely familiar with
the process and are ready for the world.

Hi.

I haven't been able to read all of the messages recently because I have
been so busy with classes, but I just read in the USA today that Katie
Teft had to be carried on a stretcher from the arena when she fell on her
neck.  They reported that X-rays showed no significant injuries...Did
anyone see it and/or have heard anything about her and how she is?
