Interesting point... I don't think there are any women coaching men's teams.
(At the college level anyway)  Are there any??

I have 2 tickets to both the men's comp's (thurs night) and the mens

(no surprises when you contact me)   It's likely that I can get my hands
on more--we have mostly girls at our gym.

There are precious few women that coach junior boys, so I sincerely doubt
there are any at the elite level. However I have met one woman who has a FIG
brevet to judge men.

I'm wondering if anyone can tell me where to obtain copies of the
current USGF boys routines.  I don't need the entire package of deductions
or breakdowns of skills, just a list of moves would be sufficient.

Since re-introductions have been going around I suppose I will join
in.  My name is Matt and I have been involved with gymnastics for
more than 20 years.  I am 27 and work in research at The Scripps Research
Institute in La Jolla CA.  I competed for Byers Gymnastics Center in
Sacramento for about 8 years making it to class I.  Due to a late growth
spurt I became practically the only 6'1 gymnast I know of except for Phil
Cahoy and Alexander Ditiatin.  (I am sure there are more out there, but
they just aren't that common).  I currently coach rec classes at the
Unversity of California at San Diego, both children and adults.  I have an
almost 2 year old daughter (born on the 4th of July) who likes to do seat
drops (at least the sitting down part) on trampolines and beds wherever she
can find them (we have discouraged her from doing them on just the floor).
I would love for her to do gymnastics, but seeing as her mom is 5'9 maybe
volleyball or basketball may end up being a more practical sport.
I have lost touch somewhat after the '92 Olympics when many of the
guys I would see in meets like Lance Ringnald and Chainey Umphrey and Trent
Dimas were on the team, but I have appreciated getting caught up again
thanks to this list.
Just a quick aside, Jason Dabb, our "correspondent" in Russia (is that
right Jason?) was a former student of mine who eventually went far beyond
anything I taught him, I have also kept in touch with him due to this
list--thanks--

To all the Men's Judges out there, I'm just curious how the following pommel
horse routine would fit with the current Code of Points and your best guess
on a score or start value.  Thanks!

First, a downhill pommel circle, step down to two back loops, a spindle to
downhill circles, two pommel loops to the center, then a Bailey, then a back
Moore, a downhill circle, and a flair to a handstand on the end.  Then, drop
down to the center, do an alternate back scissor, back scissor, alternate
front scissor, front scissor, pick up to double leg circles, a downhill
pommel loop to backward longitudinal travel, alternating hands across the
pommels, and then a flair to a handstand dismount.

A friend and I were wondering on the IRC last night who did
Scherbo overtake for the record of all time world and Olympic gold medals

P.S.  I thought I would wait till I had something to post before I did

Scherbo and Nemov.

Just had to respond to this!  I know that collegiate gymnastics doesn't get
much coverage, but I can't believe that CBS' coverage was as stated!  Yes
they showed routines, but cutting off the routines of people who fell??
Give me a break!    We all want people to respect gymmnastics but since
when is a routine over when someone falls?

There seems to be a surreal feeling to collegiate gymnastics when watching
these teams.  I coach a team that is struggling back from title 9 and our
gymnasts live in the "real world".  We all are trying to get the media and
others to really understand gymnastics and this is how we do it?  I will
say that the short story about the girl (her name is escaping me right now)
from Alabama who pulled in on her double and hit her neck and still came
back to compete says alot.  But come on!  The coverage was just "ok" at
most...

Just another opinion -

In todays' (Tuesday's) USA Today there was a page of news on all the summer
Olympic sports. In the gymnastics section it had a couple of sentences on
Dominique Moceanu. It said she's going to compete in the US Classic next
weekend and that her heel is recovered. It was really very short.

Hi, I have to get in on this too. I watched the NCAA coverage on CBS.
It's better than no coverage, but I'd have to agree mostly with Melanie
that it wasn't the best. It was short, only an hour. But an hour is
better than no time at all.

I'm guessing somehow that the funding for the NCAA coverage wasn't too
much and then had to make cuts. But, yeah. Cutting a performance off as a
gymnast falls is insulting.

Since you brought up the real world, a thought that crossed my mind while
watching the coverage was that these girls were all their own
cheerleaders - perfectly admirable on a collegiate forum, but with their
cheering it was hard to feel any seriousness being used to very poised
national competitors. The competiton was just that - a college comp. So
it was ok for what it was.

And on a final note, does anyone know of coverage of the men's comp being
brodcasted? While somewhere around the subject of bandwagoning, I would
think if the men's rounds weren't televised that it would be pretty much
unamious that something political were going on. Pardon me for being an
idealist...                             Lisa

This is a VCR one!  It's on ESPN on May 16th at 12:30am if you are in the
Eastern time zone; on May 15th at 9:30pm in the Pacific; and at the
appropriate intervals for mountain and central.  They are showing, oddly
enough, mostly all-around and individual event finals (by far the most
coveted title at NCAAs is the team title, and they are only showing
highlights of this competition).

Subject: random thoughts

In response to Dory's comments on how you need tumbling, dance (not prance),
poise, and good music to make a complete routine, two more came to my mind.
Beata Storzer's routine to Rite of Spring was very well executed, and IMHO
had all those aspects and then some.  The other one I liked for its ethnic
music was Olyssia Dudnik's routine.  Plus she tumbled a tripple twist; I
have always liked those.

NCAA's coverage wasn't too bad.  I would have liked more, but I'll take
what I can get esp. since I refuse to pay monsterous cable bills for ESPN.
What I want to know is: where was Sandy Woolsey?  I saw a glimpse of her
standing with Utah's team, but she didn't appear to be injured.  If anyone
knows, please inform me!

Last note:  Ifinally got my copy of Women's Gymnastics; a History.
If you havn't read it yet, what are you waiting for?

One last thought: Anyone familar with the the piece Jupiter for Holst's
The Plantets?  I always thought that would make some very versitile floor
music.

back to lurk mode...

HI,
The girl who pulled in on her double back was traci sommer, from utah.
She was very lucky and very brave to come back after that.  I agree that
they should not have cut short the routines of the girls that fell.

take some anti-nausea medication with you.  *Everything* in Thompson-Bowling

the aisles, EVERYTHING!  For a true blue Kentucky fan it's down right
sickening!  All kidding aside, I'm jealous of all y'all who get to go.  Yell

Subject: Illusion / Worlds

To answer a question put to me by Robin & ?

1)  Question was about landings with the feet apart and is there a deduction
can the judges detect this when they sit on the side of the horse?
>
There are six judges on big Int'l panels.  At least 4 judges would
see the landing with the feet apart.  Only those in line with the gymnast
would have difficulty picking this up.   Also the gymnast must have some
separation in the air prior to landing so all of the judges should be able
to see this.

2)  Question 2 was whether an Illusion full turn fulfilled the full turn
requirement on beam.  Yes, and it is an "E" skill.  (This was a USGF
interpretation and would be used at the NCAA level, I don't know what they
do internationally.  Avril??)

I am surprised to see this is credited as the required full turn at the
NCAA level.  I would not count it. Part of the turn is done with hand
support. I do not remember having to rule on it internationally though.
Gymnasts generally have enough trouble with the normal full turn without
attempting an illusion.

We finally got to see the Worlds coverage on Cable TV last night.  What a
great meet.  We were not shown Lius bar routine though.  I was impressed
with Phelps  bar and thought that Khorkina made an error in hers,  surely
the kip tuck on  half turn catch the high bar was not what she did in the
semis.  I would have thought her routine would have gone from the Pak salto
to a clear circle handstand half turn glide kip etc.
Wasn't Sheremeta's floor tumbling impressive.  Dina deserved the gold on
beam all to herself.
