Gymnastics stories in newspapers and magazines (fwd)

this same newspaper ignored the rhythmic national champs. These people

>ATHENS, GA, at the OLYMPIC VENUE, right down the street from us. But
yet,

fluff piece.
Evidently you didn't read the same newspaper that I
read. On Sunday
(June 2), there
was an article in The Atlanta Journal/The Atlanta
Constitution on page F5
entitled "Davis Holds Firm to 1st-Place Ribbon"
regarding the rhythmic gymnastics championship in
Athens. Also, on
Monday (June
3), The Atlanta Constitution had an article on page D6
regarding
the rhythmic gymnastics U.S. Olympic group team (article also
included the results from Sunday's individual event
finals). This
article also included bio information regarding the six
members of the
group U.S. team (or at least the
anticipated members of the team).
Granted, more publicity would always
be great but you can't say that
the event was
"ignored" by the Atlanta papers.

Stella now competes for UCLA, majors in broadcast
journalism. and is doing
very
well. Despite an injury two weeks before NCAA Finals, Stella competed
marvelously.
There's a great photo of Stella in
Eileen Langsley's "Gymnastics - The Art
of Sport" performing her back layout beam mount! I also have a photo of
Stella from
the '91 Worlds under the Gymnastics Canada web page at
http://www.capitalnet.com/~chiug/cangym.html
(1991 Worlds Gallery).
Stella's sister Stacey coaches and choreographs
competitive up-and-comers at
Gymnastics Mississauga.
Stella's
Mississauga teammate Lena Degteva, who just last week
narrowly
missed the 3-woman Olympic team but won
the Canadian championship, will be
joining Stella
at UCLA this fall.

Grace

Predictions etc.
About what Jeff said-- I do remember the magazine
making predictions for
medalists in all Olympic
sports, but they were very superficial.
I
remember that for 1992 Kim Zmeskal was listed a number of times. It's
pretty
much a list of the gymnasts that the media focuses on (which of
course means an American or two...) plus a few stars from
worlds... I
can
bet that as much press will be on Moceanu, there are
bound to be a
few stories on Boginskaya,
because much of the public knows who she is
due to
the tremendous hype before Barcelona.
Oh well, I think our
predictions are a
little more reliable, but anything can happen. I
cannot
wait. Also, in
the Sports Illus. that I got in the mail today,
they
had a little blurb on Moceanu's new
autobiography. It pretty much
said that it was
aimed for the 8-14 year old audience (of course I'll
read
it too even though I'm 19). The
blurb also said it might be a
little too early for
her to write a book at 14. It ended
with something
like "If she wins a gold in
Atlanta, will there be a volume II?" Oh
well... -Joy

Boginskaya news
I just got the May 18
issue of Sovetsky Sport and it has an
interesting
interview with Boginskaya.
I'll try to translate it and post it if there's
interest.
But I'm wondering if anyone knows anything about a film being made
about her life? She says in the interview that Hollywood
wants to make a
feature film about her and that
negotiations about this have been going on "for
a
long time." This was the first I'd heard about this! She says that she
would
play herself in part of the film, but young
girls would play her as a child.
The interviewer asks what made Hollywood
interested in her life story, and she
answers that
no one can understand how a gymnast nowadays can try for a 3rd
Olympics
when a lot of girls retire at 14 or 15. Hmmm. Has
anyone hear anything
about this future film?
Bogy also talks about
Houston, Bela Karolyi, her
boyfriend Travis, and why
she decided to make a
comeback. And she mentions two things about American
culture
that she simply cannot understand: a girl paying for her own meal when
she's out with a guy, and a husband and wife keeping
separate bank accounts! I
thought this was kind of
cute. Women's lib apparently is not big in Belarus!

Features
I have a few features on gymnasts from TV, magazines, etc.
First of
all, I saw Dominique Dawes in a Reebok commercial, but she didn't
do hardly anything except pick up a pair of shoes. Also, I was wondering
if anyone knew who the gymnast in the Coke commercial was:
the one that
says, "You can perfect this
twist..." Finally, there is a
feature on
Dominique Moceaneu
in July's 'Teen magazine. it's pretty basic, but if
anyone
wants it, email me.

Information on the olympic
rhythmic gymnastics venue
To those of you who are interested in the olympic rhythmic gymnastics
venue,
here is some information that I hope is
helpful. The venue is the UGA
Coliseum. The seating capacity is about
10,000 seats. I have a diagram of
the seating
arrangements at the Coliseum. The events are from August 1-
August 4. There
are still some preliminary competition tickets available.
Some of these
tickets are in odd lots, however. What I mean by that is, you
may not be able to get 4 seats together, etc.
Yes,
Jessica Davis will more than likely be the sole U.S. representative in
the olympic rhythmic gymnastics
competition. As for the question, "why are
we
having a olympic rhythmic gymnastics trials?",
it's just a technicality.
Everybody knows that Dominque
Moceanu and Shannon Miller are going to the
olympics. So why would they have
to compete in the olympic
trials? Same
scenerio,
same answer. They have to have a rhythmic olympic
trials, or at
least combined the nationals and olympic trials. Every olympic
sport in the
U.S. has had some sort of "trials" to determine who
was going to the
olympics.
The various federations didn't just pick some people to go the
olypmics. They had to have an
official competition to judge was going. The
same
is truth with rhythmic gymnasts.
As for those people who wanted to
know is they have good tickets, e-mail me
with
your seating arrangements, and I will let know you if have good seats.
