Speaking of gym
movies, can anyone tell me anything about a movie called
"Reach
For The Sky"? It was
shot at the Deva training centre in the late
1980s
(I'm guessing by the leotards), and unfortunately in the version I have
all the voices are dubbed over in German.......Was this
a
Romanian/American movie or Romanian/British? Most of the actresses have
Romanian
names and can actually do gymnastics (double backs etc),
however
as typical in these movies, during the
'competition' they've editied in
'real' Romanian gymnasts (Pasca is
one of them I think). The editing
is
actually hilarious at points - FX routines that
go forever and
full-twisting-yurchenko
vaults that land facing forwards (by the
actresses
not the real gymnasts obviously)......but that's beside the
point, what I want to know is, is there an english version of the movie?,
and
if so, does anyone know where I can get a copy? Since as far as gym
movies go, it seems better than most!

We weren't referring to her dismount, but rather to
the skill where she
stood on the high bar and did
a ff off and regrasped.

1/4
tumbling is tumbling where the gymnast lands in a push-up position.
For
example, when you do a front somersault and instead of putting your
feet on the ground, you keep going until you land face-down
in a push-up
position. To do that, you have to do an extra 1/4
somersault.
Roll-out tumbling is front tumbling where instead of
landing on your
feet, you keep going until you
land on your hands and roll out of it.
To
do it you have to do an extra 3/4
somersault.

Actually,
it was two rhythmic gymnasts:
The girl with the hoop was Kasumi
Takahashi, Australia's ultra-cool RSG
champ (she
lives in LA and her dance teacher has an "in" with the
organizers). Hard to recognize with the
wild makeup, even on "pause".
(Hearing she would be in the
show, I taped it. I'm not about to watch.)
Illusion catch? A walk in the park at that level.
The one doing the
chainee leaps (the artistic floor compulsory
includes
'em, and you
haven't lived till you've seen Khorkina do it) must
have been
Berube - the energy level/way of moving
was right.
It's hard to type with a cat sitting on your wrist.

I competed in Moscow News this weekend. Here is the

in russian letter
so I only give a short version.

In
the girls competition won Khorkina.
I was very
impressed. She competed compulsoris
and optionals in the russian championships on thursday
and friday. She won both. She
competed Moscow News at
Saturday and won. She competed finals in Russian
championships
Sunday morning and finals in Moscow News Sunday afternoon
and
she won everything she took part in. She
didn`t take part of the
floor final in Moscow News
because of a foot injury.
She won everything else. Impressive!!
Karbanianko won the mens
competition in the Russian championships.
His vault was fantastic. He did hanspring dubbel front and
stuck
the landing at the four meters mark. He got
9.8 for that.

I
guess I should introduce myself quickly before asking my question.
I'm a
PhD student at Queen's University in Kingston, Ont. Canada. I study
neurophysiology. I've started doing gym about 2 1/2 years
ago and needless
to say, I'm not very good (how
many good gymnasts started at age 24?).
In
any case, I enjoy it a lot and that's
why I do it.
I'd
like to know what is Henrietta Onodi (Hungary) doing
these days.
Is she in school (how old is she anyway?) ?
will she be competing anymore?
Will she remain in
Hungary? Is there any way of
reaching her (by mail)?

Hi All, How often am I ask to locate
gymnasts and provide working newspapers
with
stories on gymnastics?......hmmmmm Not Often! A friend of mine, Dave,
runs a English/Spanish newspaper that has a circulation of 17,000 in the US
and 10,000 plus sent overseas. He seems to be a big fan of gymnastics!....he
has already published
some artwork and really wants to locate any....any
hispanic gymnasts, anywhere!. I understand that there are gymnastic
programs
in Mexico, as well as other countries so,
I would like to compile a list of
contacts for
him. Hispanic Newspapers never
allow thier competetion
to
publish stories without jumping on the
band-wagon and I could see several of
Dave's rivals giving press to our
sport!........hmmmmm postive articles on
gymnastics!
great concept....hmmmmmm
from newspapers.......hmmmmm how rare in
this sport.
The name of his publication is the MEXICO
LINDO or Lovley Mexico it serves
the Atlanta, Ga. area.
Dave is good
people and his latest issue shows Lori
Strong of UGA on

piece of art filmed after last year's American Classic in
Orlando? I had heard from someone attending the
meet that there was a
stupid film being made, and
that it was a Russian tumbler who doubled for
Phillips on
floor. Boy did the Academy
miss out on this movie.

think this may also be known as, "La Championne,"
which I saw in
French. . . I think it was Romanian/French
Canadian. It was pretty good
actually, and most of the competition gymnastics was Silivas, though there
was some
Dobre beam and Voinea on
floor. There were cuts from actual
competitions, with Deva
marching in to Nationals, and Comaneci judging,
and
Eugenia Popa standing around looking delighted.

My
favorite of course, was the leos
worn by the acrtesses being
different
than those worn by the gymnasts who were edited in, and the five
tumbling pass floor routine, with a double layout as the
third pass. . .
But
you're right, other than that it was good.
I am sure it was
made with the cooperation
of Deva. Also there were some IG
posters on the
walls of the star gymnast!

or are Russian Nationals held about three times a year?
Wasn't Roschina just National Champ last fall? Maybe is this a "Classic"
meet, a reranking sort of
competition?

"Reach for the Sky" was, I believe, a joint
Romanian-Canadian
production. I believe it was shot in both countries
(in one scene,
supposedly set in a training gym in
Romania, there's a large Canadian
flag in the
background! Yeah, right)
The director, cast, and most of the
production
crew seem to have been Romanian, but the producer was Rock
Demers, a Quebec-based Canadian filmmaker.
There is
indeed an English language version available. I work in a
library
and we have several copies of it (one of which is in front of me
right now) Also,
I have seen it in a local Blockbuster Video here in
Vancouver.

One of last year's IG's
had an article on Romania and mentioned something
like
a power shift away from Deva towards Bucharest (and Onesti?). Aren't
Milosovici
and Gogean at Deva? Given what could be cited as their "advanced
age",
does anyone have an opinion on their presence at Atlanta? It would
seem
that they are too good to dispose of in a political move.

The Adrenalin Invite
(aka The Advil
Invite)
The Advil Invite was a "Masters Meet" of sorts. It was held in
Concord, CA, at Mark
Anthony's School of Gymnastics Sport, Saturday,
March 25th. There were 3 age groups for both
beginning and experienced
gymnasts. Both men and women competed.
Lots of fun was had by all. At least three gymners
were there, two
competitors and one judge. (Anyone else make it?) We were well-
represented!
I'd say roughly 50 gymnasts attended,
ranging in age from 18 to the upper
50's or so. While the old-timers were trying to warm
up those tired
muscles, the local gym kids were
literally climbing the walls, watching
and having
fun. Don't recall how many
spectators were there, but it
felt like at least
20,000 or so ;^).
I won't bore you with how I did or didn't do
(although I'm proud to say
I fell off neither sidehorse
nor highbar and caught my change grasp), but
I
*do* want to comment on the sensation of competing in general.
What a
different thing from training. Even
warm-ups seemed to have an
extra adrenalin
edge. This could be a good thing or
a bad thing,
depending on what you do with
it! It could assist in keeping
clean
form, or knock you off of pommels or
beam!
Any real gymnasts out there notice a keen difference between
training
and competition? Do the successful gymnasts use the
situation to excel,
or block out the crowd and
pretend they're in the gym practicing by
themselves? I remember Nadia saying that she did the
latter at the
'76 Olympics. I can't imagine doing this, though, so
maybe she was just
saying this to impress Bart
with her maturity ;^).

About the Zmeskal comeback:
I don't
have any official info, but I don't know if you receive International
Gymnast
magazine. In the last issue, (with
Bart and Nadia on the cover) Bela
was quoted as saying that she was in an intensive rehab
program and was looking
"better and
better". He said hopefully we
would see her in some competitions
during the
coming year. In addition, they did
a little piece on Stevlana
(spelling?)
and Kim training together at Karolyi's
during the Reese's Gymnastics
Cup.
That wasn't that long ago, so I'm assuming that her comeback is still
on.
I don't know about you, but I'm definitely keeping my fingers
crossed!!!

No - they don't go on sale until May 1 - and no
request postmarked prior to then
will be accepted,
so there are tickets.
However, gymnastics is one of THE major ticket
requests - and there is a
SIGNIFICANT amount of tickets already reserved
for corporate sponsors,
participants, etc.
