Subject: Questions

Recently, whilst reading through some gymnastics results, I came
across some names that puzzled me:

1993 INTERNATIONAL JUNIOR GYMNASTICS COMPETITION, YOKOHAMA
     JAPAN
     14. Leondra Onnie (Puget Sound)

     1994 USA CHAMPIONSHIPS (JUNIOR)
     26. Onnie Willis (Puget Sound)

     1995 AMERICAN CLASSIC (JUNIOR)
     9. Leondra Willis (Puget Sound)

WELL?!! Are they the same person or not?

Is American gymnast Dominique Dawes planning to stick through 'til
'96? The last I heard, she had accepted a scholarship to Stanford.
If she is planning on Atlanta, it will be great to see how she goes.

How did the judges possibly evaluate Yeo-Hong Chuls' handspring 2 1/2
twisting vault at the 94 asian Games? What is it's value in the Code
Of Points? Surely it is harder than many other 9.8 vaults!

Are Jon Melisanidis (greece) who was first on floor at the 93 Junior
Europeans and Ioannis Melisanidis (greece) who was second on floor at
the 94 worlds the same person? They look the same, tumble the same...
     are they the same??

Does anyone know the where abouts of Romanian sensation Claudia Rusan?
Rusan made a splash at the 93 Junior Europeans and 93 Nikon
International, but I have heard nothing of her since. Is she injured
     perhaps?

These questions have been on my mind for a long time. I would be
grateful if anyone can answer them.

Y'know, what I wanted to know is what they call that move when you dismount
and land flat on your butt.

Also, I want to know what they call the move when you miss the high bar and
land flat on your face.

David

Ask Svetlana Boginskaya and Henrietta Onodi. While their front vaults were
nearly identical - the twist occurred at the same spot, smack in the middle
- one flashed a piked Cuervo and the other a pike barani-out (front 1/2). I
don't recall either one being deducted.

Trivia: which was which?

In fun as always,

Well, it's finally up and under constant construction.  You can get
at least a little information about Stanford gymnastics (especially
women's) at http://www-leland.stanford.edu/~poser/stanfordgym.html.
(Assuming you have Web access, that it.)  Right now it consists of
three .gif thuumbnails linked to full-size jpegs (and one of them
is even male!) as well as results from this weekend's women's
meet with Washington, Brigham Young, and Illinois.  I will try to
get the men's scores up, as well as some information beyond scores
on the page as soon as I get enough free time (now what exactly is
that again?).

For those without Web access, the quick run-down is this:

 1.Stanford    #17 193.725
 2.BYU         #18 191.800
 3.Washington  #15 191.375
 4.Illinois        188.800

All-Around

 1. Walker    BYU        39.000  (9.825 9.700 9.625 9.850)
 2. Monahan   Stanford   38.850  (9.875 9.800 9.450 9.725)
 3. Crandall  BYU        38.275  (9.075 9.850 9.800 9.650)

VT

 1. Monahan Stanford 9.875
 2t.Elzie   Stanford 9.825
 2t.Walker  BYU      9.825

UB

 1. Connolly Washington 9.875
 2. Crandall BYU        9.850
 3t.Elzie    Stanford   9.825
 3t.Rose     BYU        9.825
 3t.Cooper   Washington 9.825

BB

 1t.Elzie    Stanford 9.825
 1t.Moore    Stanford 9.825
 3. Crandall BYU      9.800

FX

 1. Walker   BYU      9.850
 2. Snowden  Stanford 9.825
 3. Cosgrave BYU      9.750

A few comments:
Stanford looks like a legitimate candidate for NCAA's after this meet,
especially if they can hit on bars.  They placed fourth on the event and
had to count a fall and a major break (9.0) yet still broke the school
record for overall point total by almost a full point.

Keri Monahan and Jene' Elzie are making it an interesting race to see
who can be the first Stanford gymnast to break 39.00.  Keri looked like
she was on her way until she put her hands down on her beam dismount (9.45),
and I thought sure Jene' was going to crack it until I saw, with much
disappointment, the she was not competing floor.  She scored 29.475 over
three events.

OK, so two comments, and they're both about Stanford.  What do you want
from me?  I watch most of the meet through a camera lens, and I don't
see much of the other teams.

It's time for bed.

How did the Illinois women look?  A 188.80?  That is a good score, history
wise, though I have no clue how it will hold up nationally.

Has any gymnast ever competed it?  who?

how about as a bar dismount ? what is it worth D or E ?

also does any one know what some of these are worth ?

"tucked double back half out" on floor? off bars?
"tucked half in half out" on floor? off bars?

thanks to anyone who could help with these questions  :)

Several have.  The one that is most prominent in my mind is Oksana
Chusovitina.  I would think it's a D.

E [too high IMHO]

Anyone have results, info on Cal. Berkeley?
How about the video series about the "Masked Gymnast?"  The name might not be
accurate, but I understand some of the gymnasts have made videos with the
gymnasts as the super heroes....:-)

Hi,
I was wondering if there are many on this list who are a part of
a college or university club gymnastic program.

I am a part of the Indiana University (Bloomington, Indiana)
Gymnastics Club. The club is a member of the NAIGC
(National Association of Intercollegiate Gymnastics Clubs).

There are many schools in this area that had varsity teams at
one time (Indiana University, Indiana State University,
Purdue University, etc..) that now have gymnastics clubs.

As a club we compete on a less formal level with all ranges of ability
and age. Two weeks ago several club teams participated in Notre
Dame/Saint Mary's Clover Classic in South Bend. The schools included
Purdue, Indiana University, Notre Dame/St. Mary's, University of
Illnois, University of Wisconsin Osh-Kosh (sp?), University of
Buffalo, Virginia Tech, and Miami University (Oxford, Ohio).

There was also an alumni team (read old guys and little one girl, I'm
not sure how she became almumni) with members from IU, Notre Dame,
University of Chicago, and Purdue.  The oldest competeing person was 37
and the youngest was 7 or 8 (someone's little sister wanted to
compete!).

For more information on the NAIGC writ to
Marvin Johnson
Physical Education Dept.
Eastern Michigan University
Ypsilanti, MI  48197

If you are ever in Bloomington, please stop by HPER 171 (School of
Health, Physical Education, and Recreation). During fall and spring
semesters there are practices sun thru thurday, 7:30 pm to 9:30 pm and
friday 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm. In the summer it varies depending on who is
around.
