The Sports section of the Boston Globe ran an article today on the
downfall of the Brown University gymnastics team. I'd be more than happy
to send it to anyone if you are interested. Basically, there was a
lawsuit filed by some of the gymnasts against Brown claiming they didn't
support female sports in general(males got  1.7 million a year while
females got around 855,000). The article found for the plaintiff in the
end. Let me know if you would like more details or the article. Bye!

I think that Amy Chow and Kristy Powell have a chance to make it.  I don't
think that Kim will make it due to her time away from gymnastics and injuries
I've heard she has.  Jennie Thompson doen't have international experience and
also has had injuries, so I don't think she will make it either.

I have to agree that Amy Chow has a chance to make it.  Amy is one of the
hardest working gymnasts that I have ever met, and she has been making great
strides in her gymnastics over the past six months.  Amy does tend to get
really nervous in big meets however, so if she is going to make the team she
is going to have to work on being mentally tough.  I hope she can do it, as
she as got incredible difficulty and would be a great asset to the team.

Subject: NCAA Regionals Answers

I've been following the posts about the NCAA Regionals. Based on first
hand information (I attended the West Regionals at Oregon State) and
second hand information (the Web and this forum), I have compiled the
following information.

The Teams Qualifying for the Regionals:

West:

1. UCLA                 195.0563
2. Oregon State         193.9313
3. Washington           192.4563
4. Stanford             192.1125
5. Cal. St. Fullerton   191.6875
6. California           190.0750
7. Boise State          190.0688

MidWest:

1. Utah                 196.4688
2. Arizona State        194.3500
3. Arizona              193.5250
4. Nebraska             193.2375
5. Utah State           193.1500
6. Oklahoma             193.1375
7. BYU                  192.7438

Central:

1. Alabama              196.3375
2. Michigan             196.2625
3. Louisiana State      195.8500
4. SE Missouri          193.4500
5. Northern Illinois    193.3625
6. Illinois State       192.4187
7. Illinois-Chicago     192.1187

NorthEast:

1. Penn State           193.4875
2. Kent State           190.7250
3. Massachusetts        190.1750
4. New Hampshire        189.8563
5. Ohio State           189.3188
6. Rhode Island         186.5813
7. Pittsburg            185.1938

SouthEast:

1. Georgia              196.7275
2. Florida              195.2062
3. Kentucky             192.8562
4. West Virgina         192.8562
5. North Carolina State 191.9750
6. Towson State         191.9312
7. George Washington    189.0750

The Teams Qualifying for the Nationals:

1. Georgia              197.575 (#1)
2. Alabama              196.675 (#3)
3. Utah                 196.625 (#2)
4. UCLA                 196.025 (#7)
5. Michigan             195.725 (#4)
6. Florida              195.700 (#6)
7. Louisiana State      195.075 (#5)
8. Oregon State         194.925 (#9)
9. Nebraska             194.700 (#14)
10. BYU                 194.050 (#18)
11. West Virgina        193.325 (#19)
12. Penn State          191.225 (#11)

The parenthesis indicates the team's national ranking before the Regionals.

The top 7 schools before the Regionals made placed in the top 7 for the
Nationals with some minor rearrrangents. Oregon State moved up to the 8th
seed, and Nebraska, BYU, and West Virginia scored just high enough to make it
in the top 12 (very commendable). It turns out that Penn State won the
NorthEast Regional, which automatically qualified them for the Nationals. That
meant that any teams scoring between 193.325 (West Virgina's score) and
191.225 (Penn State's) was ineligible for the Nationals. I bet that's what
happened to Arizona, Arizona State, and SE Missouri. I also know that Stanford
scored a 192+ at the West Regional but didn't get named off in the final list
(bummer.) I think that rule is pretty lame, but not to knock any Penn fans out
there.

The West Regional competition was pretty exciting. (I must confess
that I'm an Oregon State fan and I was proud that the only 10 posted was
on the vault by Kristie Snyder of OSU!) UCLA was on fire during the whole
meet.  Leah Homma was fantastic. Karema Marrow won the AA. Heather
Bennett of OSU won the Bars at 9.975.

Best of luck to all the teams going to Nationals!

Jennie Thompson has had international experience, at the 94 Goodwill Games
where she competed against the top Russians, and many other top international
Gymnasts.  She was quite shaky, but then again, she had just celebrated her
13th B-Day there in St. Petersberg.  During the Nationals last summer, it
was evident that she had become more confident and there was a huge difference
in her form, and performances. I haven't seen her since then, but if she
can continue (without severe injuries) to improve her form (as experience
usualy brings), then not only will she make the team, she might be up in the
top 3). Three whips to a triple full, and a standing full on Beam, full-in
off the beam, will not go unnoticed.  It looks like we will probably have
(I meant to say, that the US will probably have the strongest team ever in
95) as not everyone on line is from the US, sorry. My picks for the team
in not necessarily any order, S. Miller, D. Dawes, K. Strug, Jennie Thompson,
Amy Chow, and for the last two spaces between Borden, Zmescal, Dominique
Moceanu, Kristy Powel, and if the rumor is true that Bogie is trying to
compete again and for the US, then her as well.  With all that reputation,
and talent, who knows what will happen.

OK, I'm really confused.  This is the first year that we have had one of
our gymnasts in the NCAA (at ASU).  I need a better explanation of how
the 12 teams going to Nationals were picked.

Monica (Weirdo Woman) in her post has BYU in the #10 place and said
something about National Rankings before the Reigionals.  From what I got
from the WWW page, in the final week BYU was ranked 18 and ASU was ranked 8.

In the Regionals (MidWest) ASU was 2nd while BYU was 7th.  With this in
mind, how does BYU qualify for Nationals while ASU doesn't.

I'm really confused on how these teams qualified.  I understand the top
Regional winner would make it (explaining Penn State).  But, if you're
2nd in your region and you have been ranked in the top 10 before
regionals, shouldn't you be in the top 12 to Nationals?

Please explain this to me and Thank You.

That would be the best news in the world if it worked that way,
unfortunately -- the rankings from the competition year are used to
determine who goes to regionals.
At regionals you start with a blank slate -- only the top scores from
regionals go on to nationals.  Also, they don't compare between the
regions.  For the men's side Temple actually had the 5th highest score but
they came in 4th at the eastern regionals therefore they don't go to
nationals because they were not in the top 3 in the east, even though their
score was in the top 6 nationally.

Hope this helps clear things up

I don't know why people are trying to pick the 96 team now or

Wait until this time next year, and then you may have a chance.
Who knows, even Miller could not make it. Anyone remember a gymnast named
Kristie Philips?

Even with the men it is impossible. Remember someone named Dan Hayden?

I would have to say that my picks for the 1996 Olypic team are Miller,
Strug, Dawes, Zmeskal, Powell, Marceanu, and Borden. It is true: Borden
is an excellent gymnast but she needs to maybe concentrate a little more,
I don't know. Zmeskal is kind of iffy but I feel that she will make the
cut. She is looking quit good for her age in relation to the others. (My
opinion: It would be great to see her take first spot in Olympic Trials.
I have always prefered "power gymnastics" to artsy gymnastics. That is
why I have always prefered Kim to Shannon. Nevertheless, Shannon is also
a premiere gymnast herself.)

If the Lord's willin' and the creeks don't rise, I _will_ be in Atlanta
in '96.

Well, Bela's sales pitch last week got me thinking about summer
camps, so I thought I'd throw this topic out to the group.  It's
getting to be that time of year to start thinking of where to
send the kids this summer.  Last year I sent my daughter to
Parkettes because that was where everyone in the gym went.
However, once the thrill of being at a name gym wears off, there
is not a lot for the kids to do there.

This year I am planning to take a group to Woodward, which offers
more of a camp experience and hopefully will be more fun.  I'd
love to hear a discussion about the best camps in the world.
What camps have you attended, worked at, or sent your kids to?
What makes one camp better than another?  Any humorous anecdotes
from past summer camps that can be shared in this PG forum?  Does
Cirque de Soliel offer a summer camp? If so, I'm there!

<< What did ever happen to Hilary Grivich>>

According to Bela Karolyi (in his book) and Kim Zmeskal (in her column in USA
Gymnastics), Hilary is (or at least was) participating in diving and hoping
to get a scholarship.  I agree with Bela that she was underscored at
Trials--she would have been a great opener in Barcelona.  I never understood
the 9.287 she recieved on bars.  I think Bela filed protests on all of her
optional scores, but to no avail.  I really liked her, too.  She was always
so positive and unselfish, always the first to congradulate anyone!

I think this intro got lost in electronic la-la-land, so I'm sending it
again. Forgive me if it was actually posted.

Hello Gymners! My name is Michael and I am new to this forum.
A little bit about myself. I am 21 years old (birthday Feb. 6-same as Kim
Z.'s-neat!), a college freshman at the University of Missouri-Columbia
majoring in Journalism. I lived all of my life in Houston, Texas and
moved to Missouri last summer. I attended and graduated from Westfield
High School.
As for any contact to the sport of gymnastics, I have almost
literally eaten, breathed, and lived with the sport. I have not competed
or participated in the sport, yet love it nevertheless. I believe that
the first real superstar gymnast that I rooted for was Mary Lou Retton,
among others. Kim Zmeskal? Home town favorite, so I had to love her too.
I still think she is one of the better gymnasts to have come around. I
wish that she would have been in school when I was; she would have been a
treat to talk to. Gymnasts that I have met in person include Kim Zmeskal
(Duh!), Shannon Miller, Kerri Strug, and Mary Lou Retton; not to mention
a lot of collegiate gymnasts, my favorites being Kellie Copeland and Amy
Johnson (Missouri) and Jenny Hansen (Kentucky).
Since I've moved to mid-Missouri I haven't been able to go to as
many meets as in the past. However, I did make it to the 1992 U.S.
Championships, some expositions, state championships, the U.S. Olympic
Festival in St. Louis, and the best of all, the 1992
Olympics. I had nosebleed section seating but it was great
nevertheless. As for now, it is mostly collegiate gymnastics that I am
able to see live (Go Missouri Tigers!!).
I am excited to be a part of Gymn. You can email me at

Summer Camp at Bela's ranch has ALWAYS been a fun experience for me...I've
gone for 4 summers now. I'm not a very good gymnast any more (I'm old and
tall at 15 and 5'6") and I've been out of the sport for a while, but I go
back because it's so much fun...there's so many things to do when your not in
the gym, your never bored. There's a skit night, where kids get in groups and
perform in front of the whole camp...they do some wild stuff! There's a
beauty pageant, which is funny during the talent competition (one year they
had the "machos" (which is what Bela calls the boys at camp) dress up as
girls and compete in the pageant! It was a RIOT) And anytime you get a
package, Bela makes you sing for it! There's so many other things to do, you
just forget them all, but the camp is great, the staff is great, the only
thing to complain about is the food (YUCK!!) :( but this camp is great for
young kids and older kids...just thought I'd share what the camp is like....

Thanks for the reply.  Another message I received told me that the TOP 3
in each
region go to nationals.  This makes a lot more sense.  The other bit of
info that
I've been trying to get was the results of the Midwest Regionals.  I
finally
found out that ASU came in 5th behind BYU which came in 2nd or 3rd.  This
just
goes to show you can do well all season and then blow it all in one meet.

Again, Thanks for the help.

I never intended to go into computers.  I planned to do biomedical engineering.
Hmmm..  Id say its doable depending on the lenght/control he has of the spine.
My guess is that he could learn to "tap" entirely with the back.

You ever seen how fish swim by just wiggling ?
Start with that and see where it takes you.

It wont be easy (But whoever said gymn WAS?)  If this kid sticks with it,
there will be NOTHING he cant do !  Sounds like a natural for PH.
He will NEVER drag his ankles !  So hes got an advantage there...

Once he gets the tap, he should be able to handle p-bar, h-bar & rings.
His problem with plange wont be strength but rather balance.
His p-bar problem will be mostly in developing the tap.

I never realized it but the tap is like the foundation of guys gymn !

Id say the only event hes dead in the water for would be vault.
But knowing determined kids, he may solve THAT too!

Dont let him get discouraged and get him started on finding a way to "tap".

NO NO NO !

This is gonna start a FANTASTIC conversation!
Thanks for something NEW !

I'm dying to see how this pans out!
Keep us POSTED !

Perhaps with this different centre of gravity, he may have an advantage.
I bet he has an easier time balancing while handwalking.

This kids got an unfair advantage !
(Hmmm, where did I leave that chainsaw? {evil grin} )
