Subject: Another idea for compulso...

>what I meant to say was to incorporate what compulsories

stand for (basic skill, amplitude, taking things to the fullest etc.) into

the COP's somehow<

The compulsory exercises were (and are) supposed to be a based on simple

gymnastics skills that all gymnasts possessed and that were used to execute

the more difficult skills done in the optional routines. The things that

Brian mentions *are* considered in the code and always have been. The problem

is this . . . for the people who remember such luminaries as Zakharova,

Mukhina, Kim, and Filatova (for example) they were the "tricksters"

considered "weak" in dance and artistry.  Comparing them to even today's most

elegant gymnasts they hold up as models of superior grace and artistry...and

these were the clods!

I'm not saying that everything from the past is better then today but it

seems as if gymnastics has wandered away from it's purpose; and in a rather

brief period of time at that (I'd say it started in '82 or '83... a little

over ten years). Every circus performer or acrobat can do tricks but a

"gymnast" was a combination of athletic abilty and graceful artistry.

Compulsories are nice; for me and other hard core fans but realistically

they no longer truly help the sport all that much. The scores are based more

on who *should* excel then who *does* excel. Optionals are all that matters

for AA and EF which are the big ticket events anyway.  Few people truly

consider gymnastics a team sport probably because in the US (and most other

Western nations) it's not. Teams are made up of diverse girls who don't

really know each other and coaches who fight amongst themselves to get their

face on TV the most and bad mouth the other coaches on his "team."  They are

almost always far less mature then the overly grown-up 14 year olds that they

instruct.

I agree that the code must be changed but then you must get the  judges to

enforce the code which is a whole other matter indeed.  The attitude in

general must be changed. I mean has there ever been a code that an

industrious coach can't get around? I think that at the almost impossible

rate at which the sport is growing and changing rewriting the rules every

four years is no longer enough.

For all you folks lucky (?) enough to get the oh-so-amazing Television Food

Network. Bart and Nadia's workout/cooking show called the Seven Day Workout

is on every morning at 7am and 10 am EDT. The "chemistry" between them is a

must-see. Nadia has the best on air presence since Nancy Kerrigan. ;-)

Tell me Susan: do they workout WHILE cooking, eat while cooking, or eat while

working out, and most importantly can Nadia get a word in edge-wise ? ;-)

BTW- I think her knees have suffered a tad more than Nancy's.

I don't know what you may be referring to. Yes Kevin has left (He did teach at the

Browns summer camp) but Rita is still VERY much around. As for any "Brown's"

gymnasts, perhaps you've heard of Mohini Bhardwaj (2nd Vault, 3rd BB PR Cup)

and  Jenni Beathard (1st UB, 3rd AA PR Cup). My daughter is on the Browns level 6

team. I plan on checking into the Wendy/Brandy situation this week.

It's been a month since Sara took early retirement from gymnastics...for

various and sundry reasons (good ones which I'll not go into on a public

forum.) We've supported her with this decision, which was a difficult and

brave one to make on her part. Needless to say, there's been major changes

in our lifestyle - and it's also amazing the changes that a month off of

intense training has made on her body. She's spent the last four weeks at

various sports camps - tennis, basketball, and field hockey and has done

very well at all of them (even though she's short!) Last night was the first

time she really made a comment about gymnastics saying she'll really miss

flying on bars. But no, I don't think she'll go back. She's loving her life

right now...

I discovered this morning (I'm not usually up at 8 am on Sundays) that

there's a Goodwill Games Preview show on CNN Sunday mornings. Did anyone

happen to catch the gymnastics segment when it aired (not today)? While I'm

asking if anyone happens to have the '93 Exhibition Tour with Bogie and

Scherbo (and Dawes and Miller) that aired in October or November on TBS or

TNT on tape please *PLEASE* let me know.

FYI, there's one more Goodwill preview show next Sunday morning on CNN

(though the games start Saturday on TBS). Also, the USAIGC Nationals are on

*today* (Sunday the 17th) on Prime Ticket (1 pm PDT).

UPDATE:

The eastern regional site has been chosen - Penn State will be hosting in

March, I don't remember the dates - when they decide to become available to

my memory I will post them.  Anyone who can plan to get up there for the

weekend though will have a wonderful show and time.  PSU does a great job

in every way at making gymnastics an incredible experience.

I havn't heard on the nationals yet.

Base scores through the season will be 9.5 the only time international

scoring will go into effect will be Event Finals at Nationals.

----------------------------------------------

CHANGES:

They will be doing a 6 men up and 4 scores count to the team score.  This

is designed to help in making teams more competetive who lack depth.   I

would say this will create a very exciting nationals - might prove to be

something worth coming to, especially since it may be the last NCAA

nationals for the men.

Event finals will not only have international scoring base, they will also

use a 6 judge panel with the 4 middle scores being averaged.  They are

hoping that this will help move things along time wise, and give a more

accurate reflection of where the gymnast stands in the international

picture.  Not to mention the fact that 10's are even harder to get in this

type of situation.

Hi all!

The new job and associated life changes have kept me from posting

to the list as much as I used to.  (And I'm sure some of you are *very*

thankful for that!)  But it's good to see so many people have been willing

to jump right in and fill the void.

I need some help from you all.  I'm writing a PC-based program,

and I would like to include a small graphic of each of the four women's

apparatuses: vault, bars, beam, and floor.  I can't use GIFs of specific

gymnasts on these events.  I need something generic.  If you know where

I might be able to ftp something suitable (or, bless you, if someone less

graphically-challenged than myself were willing to whip up a quick .BMP

graphic), please drop me some personal e-mail (address below).  No need

in cluttering up the list with replies.  If, for some reason, you too are

looking for such an item, again drop me mail and I'll keep you updated.

      Thanks in advance.

Subject: News on Christy Henrich

The AP reports that Christy Henrich (a member of the USA's 1989 Worlds

team [4th at Worlds on UB], many time National team member, almost

1988 Olympian [she was 10th at Trials]) is improving, but remains

hospitalized. For those who don't know, Henrich is fighting both

anorexia nervosa and bulimia. Her weight, which was about 93 lbs when

she was competing, according to AP, was at 60 lbs one year ago.  No

word as to what her weight is now.

Christy Henrich is in ICU of the Medical Center of Independence in

Independence, MO.

The fundraising drive of last year organized by a support group in

Missourri and supplemented by help from the USGF brought in $34,000.

However, the medical expenses exceeded $100,000.  Henrich also had the

free services of a Dr. Gail Vaughn as part of "the counseling effort",

but AP reports that Henrich stopped seeing Dr. Vaughn after a while.

That's all I know!  (Oh yeah-- words of support or cards for Henrich

can be sent to her at the USGF; 201 S. Capitol Ave #300; Indianapolis,

IN 46225.)

Subject: small question...

...excuse me for interrupting, but I have a question...

I'm a 23 yr old male who lives in Jacksonville Florida.  I have had a deep

love of gymnastics for a long while and had a bit of exposure to them my

first year at college in NY.  But now, as I'm no longer goingto school

there, I no longer have much acces to gymnastic equipment.  I still have

the urge to practice though.

My question is, does anyone have any recommendations as to how I could

enjoy the flexibility and strength that gymnastics provides without a

gymnastics "setting"?  I'm rather tall (6'2") so competition is out

probably, but I'm still yearning to develop the skills a male gymnast has.

If anyone could advise, I'd greatly appreciate it..

Women...

I agree with most that Romania has the depth, consistancy, difficulty, and

name recogntion that will most likely spell victory for them in Dortmund.

Gogean, Milos (possibly her swan song?), Hategan, Cacavean and company will

form a strong nucleus.

Russia has the most talented athletes  - IMHO - but lacks depth and

consistancy. Fabrichnova, Khokina, and Kochetkova are shoe-in's and hopefully

people like Golub, Vandesheyeva (she's so awesome!), and Nikolyaeva are

healthy and can compete.

The US will most likely field Dawes & Miller as our only really strong

athletes. Borden, Fontaine, Webster, Meduna, and a few others will most

likely challenge for the other 5 spots available. Generally, it's a weak team

and we'll have to fight it out with the Chinese for the bronze. If they have

-  for a change -  consistancy on their side they could pull it out.

Ukraine and Belarus are the dark horses...If Belarus can field both

Yurkina's, Piskoun, Tarasevich, and Polozhkova they have a shot at the

bronze. Ukraine's hopes for a medal are more realistic. Lysenko (retired?),

Kalinina, Stovbchataya (retired?), Kschnik, Boulkhova are a strong

foundation.

Men...

Russia pretty much has it locked up if Arkaev can assemble a team without

bickering (meaning swallow his pride & let Kharkov and others not at Krugloye

compete).  Karbonenko, Voropaev, Shaebav, Nemov, and on and on are truly

unbeatable if they show up and hit at least half their sets.

Ukraine for silver in my book. Belarus could also be a factor if they can

assemble anything beyond Scherbo and Ivankov which won't be enough for a team

comp.

China (if they actually hit could do far better but the odds against that are

so high), Italy, and my dark horse pick Hungary all have shots at the bronze.

Also never count Japan out no matter how pathetic they've been lately.
