questions from them.

Hey Gymn,

Throughout this week I will be posting information on the American Cup that
Gymn member Debbie and I have assembled.  (Debbie did the vast majority
of this work.)  Information to follow in the next few days includes results
and other interesting tidbits from the Cup throughout the years.

I will only be clipping parts of the files that Debbie assembled... if you
want the full files, they are available via ftp or gopher in our directory at
ftp.cac.psu.edu (pub/Gymn).

The first day of competition is on a Friday. Each gymnast competes all
events. The gymnasts with the eight highest totals from the first day
advance to the second day, which is the AA finals. No more than two
gymnasts per country may advance. The scores from the first day are
also used to determine the event winners. The second day of
competition is often shown live on American TV.

Just think of all the great teams Southern Connecticut has had over the
years without ever having scholarships.  Korman, McCutchen, Dembrow, and
this list goes on and resembles much of the US national team for years.
The opportunity to train with Abe and be part of a national caliber
college team played a lot into these non-scholarship athlete's careers at
Southern.

I know, tuition used to be tiny, but that kinda ruins my point.

I made a remark in the report on the compulsories where I said something like
"Meduna probably score 9.0+ on every event."

Well, turns out she got a 8.9 on vault.

However, in compulsories, Dominique Moceanu (9.125, 9.075, 9.400, 9.050) and
Kristy Powell (9.175, 9.000, 9.050, 9.000) both had 9.0+ scores on every
event.

Here's a breakdown of how the compulsory scores fell into ranges.  There are
24 total gymnasts when combining juniors and seniors.

Number of Gymnasts in each score range
---------------------------------------------
Event      VT        UB        BB        FX
=============================================
9.0+       16        7         3         7
8.5-8.975  7         5         8         12
8.0-8.475  1         4         3         5
7.0-7.975  0         3         9         0
6.0-6.975  0         4         1         0
5.0-5.975  0         1         0         0

So, that's kind of an eye-opener there.  Bars and beam, traditionally known
as the two "skill" events, are causing quite a few problems for lots of
gymnasts.

Subject: Gymcarolina-Marriott Classic (long)

Well, fellow Gymn'ers, I went to my first gymnastics meet this past Saturday,
and it was a BLAST!  It was the Gymcarolina-Marriott Classic.  I was there for
the girls' level 10 competition only.  Competing level 10 clubs were:

Gymcarolina Gymnastics Academy, Raleigh, NC
Gym Stars, Ann Arbor, MI (had TWO teams competing)
Richmond Olympiad, Richmond, VA
Karon's Gymnastics, Fairfax, VA
Hampshire Gymnastics, Amherst, MA
Reading Gymnastics, Reading, MA

The meet was here at NC State in our Carmichael Gymnasium.  But it was in a
part of the building that I had never been in, so I had to walk around in the
cold for a while.  The schedule stated a 6:15 start time, but competition
actually didn't begin until after 6:30.

Since this was my first meet, I am not really qualified to comment on the
judging, but the crowd didn't do any moaning or booing, so I guess that I can
take that as a good sign.  I must confess as well that I have been rather
spoiled from watching elite-level gymnastics on the tube, so I had to get used
to seeing a few extra giant steps on landings and the occasional landing on
the young ladies' posteriors.

If anyone has any comments on my stuff, please let me know.  Maybe it will
make me a better Gymn reporter.  Thanks.

Here are the results (all level 10):

Ages 9-11 (four girls competing):

Gymcarolina may have won the team competition, but their fifth member

Also, don't forget: the McDonald's American Cup is on Saturday (NBC).

Hiya Gymn,

My name is Joe and I have been on the list for a few weeks now.  I am new to
the sport of Gymnastics and know nothing about it.  The only thing that
attracted me to the sport is the graceful movements of the atletes when they
perform their routines.  My favorite are the rythmic gymnastics.  Anyway, to
better understand the sport I even subscribed to International Gymnastist.
As I flipped through the pages I noticed something.  What happened to Henrietta
Onodi?  On the first page where they sell the BW glossies, she looked great.
But then later there is a picture of her looking like she gained 100 pounds.
Just curious.

Subject: mscor102.zip - Men's Gymnastics scoring templates for Excel40 (fwd)

In response to the question last week about scoring programs, the following
software has been uploaded to the FTP site OAK.Oakland.Edu.  Below is the
announcement sent to the newsgroups for anyone interested.  If it's useful,
enjoy.

> Mscor102.zip contains templates for use in Excel 4.0 to score men's
> gymnastics meets.  There are twelve templates, depending on whether
> there are two, three, four, or six teams, and whether team score is
> based on the best three, four, or five scores in each event.  The
> template will accept the scores from 1-4 judges.  It will enter the
> score of one judge, the average of 2 judges, or drop the high and low
> scores and average the middle two of 4 judges' scores and enter that
> as the appropriate average. It will rank each gymnast on the event as
> scores are entered.  It will total the correct number of scores for team
> score.  It will carry entered scores down the all-around listing and
> enter them for athletes listed in the all-around event.  It will also
> rank the all-around gymnasts based on scores entered.  All rankings,
> event scores, and team scores are kept current by Excel when when
> auto-calculate is on so immediate results are available.
>
> At least a 24 pin dot matrix or laser printer is necessary to print

Subject: Receive NCAA rankings via email

We have a lot of new members, it seems, so I thought I'd adverstise this
again.  Every week, I email out the NCAA rankings for men and women.
Generally, I mail out the men's rankings by noon EST on Tuesday, and the
women by noon EST on Wednesday.  If you would like to receive rankings in
your email, please send a request to:

rharless@aol.com

and let me know if you want men's, women's, or both.

For the casually interested, I will be posting the rankings to the list in a
couple of weeks.

Rachele
